Tutorial

Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: The German-Soviet War 1941-1945 is a turn-based World War II strategy game stretching across the entire Eastern Front. Gamers can engage in an epic campaign, including division-sized battles with realistic and historical terrain, weather, orders of battle, logistics and combat results.

The critically and fan-acclaimed Eastern Front mega-game Gary Grigsby’s War in the East just got bigger and better with Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: Don to the Danube! This expansion to the award-winning War in the East comes with a wide array of later war scenarios ranging from short but intense 6 turn bouts like the Battle for Kharkov (1942) to immense 37-turn engagements taking place across multiple nations like Drama on the Danube (Summer 1944 – Spring 1945).

There's a tutorial manual in the "manuals" folder (Matrix Games>Gary Grigsby's War in the East>manuals>WITETutorialManual). Post any questions you might have about the tutorial here or in another thread about the tutorial and I'll try to answer them.

One part of the tutorial is not entirely correct, but it was sadly discovered too late to be fixed prior to release.

From the section describing the deliberate attack:
There are some cases (e.g. combat units with insufficient MP, non-artillery combat units
in a stack two hexes away) where you will have to manually deselect units before you will be
allowed to attack.

It is not true that you have to manually deselect units for a deliberate attack if some of the selected units don't have the required amount of MP's. The deliberate attack mouse cursor icon won't be displayed if trying to attack with a selection including units that don't have enough MP's for it, but you can still attack by right clicking as you would do normally.

All units that can make the deliberate attack will then do so, the units that can't simply won't do anything. The appearance of the deliberate attack cursor icon indicates that all units can attack, the lack of such an icon doesn't necessarily mean no units in the selection can make the deliberate attack.

380 pages manual + 40 pages tutorial manual. This sounds particularly good !!!

Hopefully the tutorial that I wrote (well the first thirty pages or so) combined with references to the main manual will help get you up to speed fairly quickly. The bigger challenge will be in learning the various nuances, strategies and tactics to achieve your goals.

The on-map combat values (attack with a attack/MP counter setup and attack and defence with a combat counter setup as selected in the options screen) you see on a stack is the combined total for the entire stack/all units in the stack. You can view the individual unit strengths in the unit panel to the right when the stack is selected. The MP's that are displayed when you've set the counters to show attack/MP are the MP's for the unit with the most MP's in the stack, not with the least MP's or any other possibility. Thanks to lparkh for the heads up.

Yes at first I thought I had this awesome 8 point unit in my stack along with others when it was really like a 2,2 and 4

Well, I just ran the tutorial, and the Germans abandoned Veliye Luki without a fight on turn 2. Disappointing this happened.

Change the settings to Hard and then Impossible to see some difference.

Did no one bother to proofread the tutorial? I can understand the odd rules error due to the iterative nature of development, but the numerous grammar and punctuation errors are pretty inexcusable. Overall, I'm really pleased with the game and the documentation, most of which seems to be the product of much care, in light of which the sloppiness of something as short as the tutorial really stands out.

I just finished the tutorial with a major Soviet victory, not least because the game awarded me 240 points for Velikie Luki and 130 for Novosokolniki. Those numbers seem to be too high. I held VL for 8 turns = 80 points and still had it at the end of the scenario = 100 points, so shouldn't I get just 180 points? And while I don't remember exactly when I took Novosokolniki I know that it was for much less than 8 turns, so even including the 50 points for holding it at the finish the 130 points seem too many. What am I missing?

The per turn points are per "player-turn", so they are actually scored twice per complete turn.

The tutorial was a last minute thing and though people did read the original parts and my part and I believe those were mostly OK, but a number of final changes were made that nobody read before it was published. I have already posted about the currently inconsistent use of punctuation in the text on the developer forum, so hopefully the tutorial will be in a better shape after the next patch.
