No WitE or any games other than WitP:AE for me. One AE PBEM game is all that I can handle and somewhat keep my business and family and teaching responsibilities going.

Steel Panthers unfortunately doesn't like Vista 64bit.

It didn't like Win7 64bit either but was able to resolve it thx to these forums. Another solution available is to dual boot. (My main machine now sports Win7(64) and XP.

a squad level game for the entire Great Patriotic War......(with what....GULP....12 hour turns?) you have far more time on your hands than i ever will..... [:D]

I played to much ASL growing up, so all games since have been judged by that experance, and I have not found any PC game thats comes close to that detail, WiTP howeaver has kept my atention for a long time.

It would be fun to have a ASL type game that could be played basicaly at length, with a series of battles, theirs no way you do the entire war.

WiTP leval detail (or better 10 or 20 NM hexes) would be fun in the East or the Med, or anywehar else for that mater.

thats what Steel Panthers is for! [:)]
There is a good series of games called 'Squad Battles' from HPS simulations (sorry matrix guys) that play at the squad level and very much remind me of ASL.

I will create a XP virtual machine one day to run it.

I played ASL and loved it. I find the Combat Mission games come the closest to an ASL experience in my opinion Brady. If you haven't heard of them it may be worthwhile. They have been out for a long time now and I'm not sure if they are still available other than by download. Graphically they are ok, but the real nuts and bolts of the game are like in WitPAE, it's what the combat engine is doing behind the scenes that is a wonder.

On a WitE note. Is this an updated version of Gary Grigsby's "War in Russia?" Does anyone remember that one? The units look spiffed up as does the interface, but the look of the game reminds me of War in Russia. I loved that game, had to run on DOS I believe [:D] I spent a lot of my oat sowing years to that game. Now that I think on it, what was I thinking! It was a great game, but oh the lost loves that might have been! [X(]

WitE isn't like WitPAE and I think a lot of players that enjoy the naval and air side of things will find WitE a completely different kind of beast. If you liked the old hexstyle boardgames you'll probably like WitE, if not, it may not be everyones cup of tea with the lack of naval and air combat Pacific style.

I'm getting it of course, but not telling my spouse! If she finds out I have another all consuming war to fight I'm so toast!

Hi all,

FYI... [:)]
ORIGINAL: Joel Billings

War in the West (43-45) and War in North Africa are the next two games we will be working on. Eventually plan to link them all (that is the plan anyway).

Leo "Apollo11"

Where did this come from!!!! And how exactly do they plan to 'link' them??? What does that mean?? Are we hinting at a WWII grand strategy game? Or what??

Please let me know where i can find the rest of Joels' quote.

Thanks

I got WitE and all I can say is "Wow, what have I done?"

I played through the tutorial and it was a lot of fun, just a small section of the map where you need to capture a couple of victory hexes. I didn't read the manual, or the separate tutorial manual and managed a minor victory the first time. I read the manual and managed a major victory.

My summation is this:
- Beautiful, stunning graphics for the map and the counters.
- Intuitive interface, within minutes you can begin moving units, fighting, and even winning battles with a simple left-click/right-click combination.
- Even though fighting and moving is pretty simple, to win over the long haul there is a LOT of depth to understand.
- The lack of detail in the air war is noticeable, though for me, not a big deal.
- Seems difficult, at least in the tutorial, to cut off, or completely destroy a unit.
- I found myself wishing in my limited playtime wishing that there was more feedback from the combat engine.
- As in life, there are no odds displayed before an attack. I would love to see all the factors going into the calculation after the fact though. All those beautiful factors are as good as not there if there isn't any evidence of them.
- MY GOD THE CAMPAIGN IS HUGE.
- MY GOD THE MANUAL IS HUGER!
- I hope if they do a WitP 2 they use the interface and the map style - did I mention that they're gorgeous?

As far as AE vs WitE, I'm pretty fickle with my gaming. Ok, I'm a moody bastard. I'll flop back and forth between these and a few others I'm playing, but this will definitely eat into my limited game time significantly.

Thus WitE (i.e. just released "War in the East") will "link" to upcoming WitA ("War in the Africa") and WitW ("War in the West")! [:)]

Not sure exactly what my 2 cents are, on one hand while reviewing WITE it looks promising, however I think I am going to wait for the first major patch before buying it.

Then again, when AE came out I bought it that day and let it sit in my download folder for almost 4 months because I was already in a PBEM game for WITP and had very little time
to get another game going.

So far the bulletin board drove me to buy WITP and WITP Ae along with a few other games from Matrix, so far no one has let me down and I am thankful we have Matrix and this forum to
hang around on, cheers!

As far as we know there is no glaring problem with current WitE release... some small(er) bug fixes will be soon out in upcoming patch whilst the usual 2By3/Matrix support would continue as always with all necessary bugfixes and enhancements!

Still, the map is absolutely gorgeous, and the counters are the best counters I've ever seen, for counters.

Interesting. I hope "it all" in the long haul includes WITP. Or maybe a general design principle that allows to link both in one.

I presently am too involved with ARMA2 modding and WITP-AE, and besides applying for positions. Can't handle more within at least the next 6 months, and I have learned in the past anyway that waiting until the major patching period for new games is over and users have given feedback on forums is often worth it. Not so critical with Matrix games as release quality is usually high ("well beyond beta"), but with other companies I got screwed a few times.

Generally I like the idea and scale of WitEast, but I have a few things I miss from the original War in Russia, and that I feel I will miss from WITP-AE. The latter just has much more depth if you include the production and R&D, or training, or the air and naval war details, and it covers the whole Pacific. WiTE's withdrawal system (fixed & disconnected from the progress of the own game, and linked only to historic development of the other AOs -- an approximation I find a little lacking) and production system will hopefully evolve over time into something with a detail of WITP-AE. Also a choice between 3 day and 7 day turns would add a lot more to the feel of "rushing with the Panzers through Russia", but that's not so important on my personal scale. The game seems worth consideration, particularly if the AI proves to be good. Maybe next summer, once my schedule clears up...

As long as there's no strato sweep/CAP and invincible 4E bombers can't fly every day, I'm going to byu WitE... [:D]

All air combat is automated. You just set some doctrine and mission priority. this is good because it's less work and less to complain about.

I would rather WITE not evolve into a WITP-type production model. But of course you all know my preferences.

To amuse my (bored) self over the past week or so, I have been tracking the "Users viewing this topic" count for both the WITP:AE and the WITE fora. Interestingly, no matter the time of day (I have checked this several times daily, including overnight; I work nights), the ratio of WITE forum visitors to WITP:AE visitors is consistently about 3 to 2. That is, lately about 50% more people are visiting the WITE forum than the WITP:AE one.

Might we expect the WITE advantage to increase or decrease over time? Will WITE gain in relative popularity, or will interest in it slacken as it loses its "new kid on the block" status?

WitE looks like a beautiful, well-designed game that will do very, very well.

I doubt it will have the legs that WitP:AE has, though. A two dimensional (land/air) campaign just doesn't have the grip that a three deminsional (land/air/se) camapaign has.

Frankly, I'm surprised that WitE, a new game, only has a 3:2 lead on AE, which has been out for 1.5 years. In two years, I'll bet you AE will have a 3:1 lead over WitE.

Prior to my current WITP-AE addiction, I played Hearts of Iron II. Although I don't necessarily enjoy all the details you have to become emersed in to play WITP, I have to say that the multi-faceted combined arms aspect of the Pacific Theater is much more interesting than a strictly land-based campaign. So for me, WITE is not a temptation.
