AI processing time

Post by vaned74 »

I am playing the AI in the 1944 Scenario.

It appears that the Soviet AI turns take sometimes as long as 1.5 hours to execute in this scenario. I have combat resolution set at 1; message delays set at 0.05 and combat close window set at 0.05 seconds.

I am running in window mode; Intel Dual Core 7450 Processor; 2.16 GHz, 6 GB RAM.

It really appears to go slow when the starting a battle. It sometimes sits there with just the forces listed on each side for 15-30 seconds doing nothing; then it counts the people and the losses and implements the result. Oddly, and I will try to observe it again; it seems when the game is 'freshly' started (ie I close the game program completely and restart it from my start up menu) - it appears to run faster in execution.

Has anyone else seen this?

On the positive side, I have played a few turns into this scenario about four times now - each time, the Soviet AI has shown a different end angle of attack. Game 1- what I expected, trying to cut off AGC by driving for Minsk from two directions. Game 2 - started that way; but then suddenly turned northwards for Riga on week 3. Game 3 - drove for Minsk as usual; but then shifted forces and attacked AG North Ukraine front hard; trying to break through behind Minsk by driving through Brest-Litvosk. Game 4 - usual AGC move; but then aggressive strike at Rumania. I'm impressed so far. It could be that as I have FOW off for the Soviets (on for the Germans - the human player) that it is picking up on my moves and reacting with its complete knowledge. Nonetheless, it is challenging.

Hi vaned74,

That does seem quite slow for your system specs.

Please try turning of all background programs and extra process that could be using CPU cycles. Use your task manager to see what your CPU usage is.

You should also give the public beta update a try and see if that helps.

Regards,

I will try the beta when my current turn finished processing (going on 1 hour 45 minutes now for Turn 2, Scen '44). I am running the hotfix mouse performance version now.

I have been monitoring CPU usage, it rarely goes about 40% for WitE and other CPU usages appear to be maybe 4% total on average. So the only thing really processing is the game itself.

I am going to close out and restart shortly and see what happens. I also have Ageod's AACW and I have seen it do this sometimes too - it makes me think it is a memory leak or something.

A question - what do the AI numbers mean at the top of the screen - like AI 3 14 or AI 4 105; 1 105; etc. Is there some way to measure progress in turn resolution for the AI this way?

These are AI phases and passes used by Gary to code AI. You may ignore then unless you see a problem during some particular AI phase and AI pass, which can be used as report references.

Hmm - running now under the Beta fix and it doesn't appear to be any faster. Is it possibly a function of just the '44 scenario having so much action initially?

Actually I have been observing the game running with the resource monitor on. It appears that it goes for long spell showing 0 cpu usage on the process. Then it spikes up to 30-40% of the cpu and then back down to 0 for a while. If someone has a recommendation on good screen video capture I will record and send in.
