Air attacks nearly across the map as the norm. Luzon is getting lighter treatment, though. Bataan has been building fortifications and Clark might resume doing so soon.

Budding ASW groups spar with I-boats in the sea lanes near San Francisco, while Dutch boats are battered making daring port attacks.

xAK Hokko Maru found out the hard way that it's a bad idea to use the same strait both coming and going. Dutch SS KXIII sunk her within sight of Komodo Island. Perhaps the survivors can swim ashore? [X(]

China
The forces defending north of Kukong have been pushed back, and met up with reinforcements at the same time. One corps is hors de combat and will withdraw. Another corps is rushing to the front. The terrain here is rough - less favorable than the woods+rough just vacated. Wenchow again holds fast by repelling today's attack at 1 to 10 odds, although fortifications were reduced. The usual sprinkling of air raids clouded the skies over China.

Philippines
Lingayan is recaptured by the Japanese, but Malaybalay and Clark hold fast against an attack and a bombardment. Multiple air attacks harry the defenders.

Java
Heavy air attacks kept all major airfields closed, but Batavia held off an enemy assault. As much supply as possible has been moved to the mountain redoubt of Bandoeng.

The Roundup
The IJA has pulled back its forward unit in Burma to deal with the Allied rear guard (which is getting high marks for looking fierce). Other units are almost to the defensive positions in central Burma, but Sun-Tzu say that is bad ground.

Darwin and Singapore both raided by air. Singapore, bombarded by artillery also, will see a further draw down in forces as more eligible units are airlifted to Palembang. A new problem is that with daily artillery fire the enemy is more apt to notice the change in Singapore. Palembang is well beyond 500 AS and the hope is to bring in another ~3 regiments worth of troops.

Several Dutch subs are repositioning. Meanwhile at least one I-boat is running aerial search near San Francisco and spotted a convoy at the base itself. Where are those escorts Adm. King promised?

DEI Update
Batavia held against a determined attack. Defense lines were shattered, however, so no fortifications remain. Makassar and the island of Talaud-eilanden have both been invaded and must fall tomorrow.

Elsewhere
686 to 1: The Imperial Guards Division forgot that the Burma rear guard looked fierce. One battalion destroyed, one merely smeared and fleeing.

The Roundup
Several air raids on the port of Singapore destroyed the remaining 3 motor torpedo boats in the region today. Palembang has reached 600 Assault Strength is continuing to fly in combatants. The situation in the woods north of Kukong is precarious with many enemy present and friendly reinforcements on the way to defend Hengyang. Chinese forces from Ichang, 4,000 AS strong, are fording the river to the east in an attempt to smash the enemy units there. Fierceness or folly? Aerial searches launched from an I-boat continue off the US west coast. Makassar and the island of Talaud-eilanden have both fallen. Small IJN carriers have moved from the IO back to the Java Sea. Hunters are there, too. Big IJN carriers remain at Soerabaja licking wounds.

DEI
Palembang continues growing. Djokjakarta falls but Batavia withstands yet another attack. The defenders don't really have the strength, perhaps the attackers are not resting enough between attacks. Air attacks continue, but the small enemy carriers have move out of the Java Sea to the edge of the South China Sea - just barely in range - to avoid the Dutch Sharks.

Movements
While the I-boats play cat and mouse with escorts and loading convoys off the US west coast, air, land, and sea forces are gathering for a large and heavily escorted convoy to Australia.

China
The host from Ichang will cross the river tomorrow. An all out effort from China Bomber Command is ordered to hit the defenders in the woods across the river and to impede progress of the enemy unit rushing to reinforce the breach.

At grid hex 79,55 in the rough country north of Kukong the Chinese Army delivered a sound defeat to confident attackers. Additional reinforcements are on the way, and this might have been a pivotal battle in holding the line, either there or at building defenses further back. Time will tell. At this point I would say the hell with the Mersing gambit. It has become apparent that the Japanese need to grab Palembang on turn one.

The Allies can't cover all the entry points into southern Sumatra. Once Singapore falls the 25th Army can be landed somewhere (Oosthaven preferably) and then slog it to Palembang overland.

That's what I'd do anyway.

There are plenty of alternatives, and only time will tell if pulling all those troops in there really matters or not. At this point I'm thinking that it's good (for IJ) to at least shut down Palembang airfield as soon as practicable. It's much easier running this airlift with the planes at Palembang pulling in directly from Singapore and elsewhere. The highest quality troops are coming from Singapore, and if both airfields were shut down (with high service damage) that would take a lot longer. The flying boats would have to be at a third location, fly the troops in from Singapore, then fly the troops to Palembang. I'm already doing that using the Dutch transport planes (very short range) to get Dutch troops out of northern Sumatra. The same issue with troops in no man's land, like the Bde that was in a coastal jungle hex on Malaysia. The flying boats got all but one squad (not worth picking up) and an item too large to fly. If Palembang were shut down that would have been a third party transfer.

LRCAPing here and there would be a great impediment also.

At the present rate, in 3 to 5 more turns Palembang will have 700 AS, the equivalent of 2 light divisions. Forts are still building but slowly due to paucity of engineers. If I'm lucky, count on fort level 3 and 750 to 900 AS to defend in that swamp hex (at 3x I think).

Ichang Kaching!
The Chinese attack east across the river by Ichang hit the jackpot today, overwhelming 3 divisions and a mixed brigade. Although Chinese forces did suffer a lot of disablements, the only thing marring the day was the failure of all the Chinese bombers to fly. Had they flown the victory might have been greater.

Seeing the oncoming freight train, the IJA sent it's air might against the troop columns and Ichang airfield, causing severe damage to facilities there. In trade, the enemy left behind more than 20 of their high-tech Nate fighter planes.

Breaking through the clouds over the KB parked at Soerabaja came 5 Dutch medium bombers, surely soiling the uniform trousers of some IJN senior officers. Alas, alert Zeros on CAP quickly downed 3 and drove off the remaining pair.

Palembang
Palembang is up to 656 AS. It's funny how troops in beautiful but besieged Singapore are lining up to fly to the swamps of Palembang.

Wenchow
Wenchow holds again, but supplies are heading downward, and enemy casualties are only ~25% higher than defenders.

Batavia
Batavia holds, but no one knows how. Probably heavy weapons and/or combat vehicles were enough to hold down the attackers' pace of advance.

Java Juice
How do you make Java Juice? You squeeze Java from both sides! Batavia went bust today, with very heavy casualties to the defenders. They are now fleeing toward Bandoeng. But the airfield at Bandoeng is closed, so the few remaining combat aircraft at at Kalidjati, which has no combat troops! Semarang was taken by the Empire today, and their two hands now squeeze toward the remaining defenders. Those defenders will resist as long as possible to give time to Palembang...

Palembang
Palembang AS is 667, rising a bit more slowly than before. That might be because the transport planes are currently pulling troops into Padang. After a few more days they will push those troops into Palembang. The flying boats continue pulling good troops from Singapore directly to Palembang.

For the first time in many days, no enemy search planes were seen off the US west coast. Shipyards throughout Allied cities have gone busy. The enemy at Malaybalay seems to be resting (or even awaiting reinforcements), resulting in a mixture of relief and concern for the defenders. Air raids continue all over the battle areas.

Wenchow does well in combat but supplies are a worry. There are plenty at the moment but they are being expended at an alarming rate. Malaybalay is attacked again and holds even better than before the quiet, as the foxhole line is held.

The problem that I have had with Palembang - and all the oil producing centers - is that it seems no matter how strongly they were defended, no matter how many engineers present, they have always been captured with no damage or just a trivial amount. My two objectives here are 1) have it be severely damaged upon capture, and 2) hold it for as long as possible. I can only influence #1 by causing as much battle there as possible, and having as many engineers on hand as possible. I can influence #2 the same way. So, yeah it's an oldie but a goody!

Sian Woods
At grid square 85,42 IJA forces crossed the river to join their brethren already peering through the rough, wooded terrain at Chinese patriots. But they crossed at the wrong place and suffered thousands wounded. Chinese reinforcements are moving to the area as the recovered enemy will pose a threat.

Clark Clicks
Another probing attack was treated roughly at Clark Field today. May there be many more!

Kalidjadi Klash
Finally catching wise that the Dutch aircraft could not have been flying from Shangri la owing to lack of the needed range, the enemy bombed Kalidjati aerodrome causing only minor damage.

Subs and Targets
The Dutch subs remaining on station have been finding targets scarce of late. USN ASW groups clashed with I-25 several hundred miles from San Francisco, while nearby a large convoy of planes, troops, and supplies left the FS Bay for the Land Down Under (henceforth known as LDU for security reasons).

Burma
Prome and Bassein fell today. Fort building at Schwebo, the oil center, are underway. Bombers and modern Hurricane fighters are being positioned for the defense of the open country of central Burma.

China
Nanning is invested with an enemy regiment and brigade. They likely do not posses enough raw strength to capture the city, but the defending combat unit is very inexperienced. Stiffening forces have been dispatched. Also, 3 IJA units are seen moving toward Ankang, which is lightly defended. Additional units were already on the way there and more deployments have been ordered.

DEI
Kalidjati is almost closed, which is appropriate because there are almost no aircraft remaining. In a stunning act of bravery, ABDA HQ has spontaneously taken up duty as the rear guard for the KNIL forces retreating to Bandoeng. Palembang AS = 786.

The Roundup
Somehow IJA troops were able to wrestle control of Buitenzorg from ABDA HQ. Air attacks across the battle zones continued, with Kalidjati getting hammered worst. Maneuvering continues in China. On both sides, subs are relegated to objects of attack.

Palembang has reached 800 AS. There are 89 additional to airlift out of Singapore (without changing HQ's of other units), and about 60 still elsewhere on Sumatra. It might prove impossible to transport any troops from Java, and just a few candidates are emerging from jungles on Borneo. Supplies have been growing as well and now stand at about 83,000.
