AI on Impossible seems to be able to create corps behind lines

Post by vaned74 »

I am playing 44 scenario vs Soviet AI on Impossible level to see how it attacks. I have played about 6 turns into my latest effort.

The Soviet AI has somehow created 4-6 cavalry and rifle corps behind my manned fort line despite never breaking through. I have turn start and end saves for the last several turns if someone wants to take a look.

Is there some sort of soviet infiltration technique or allowance for simply walking over enemy lines?

That was the end of my turn 4 move. The lines are the same as they were at the beginning of the turn.

And here is the beginning of my turn 5 move. There was an attack against the 1-19 Cavalry brigade (German) next to the hungarian hussar division; however, it held easily. Oddly enough, as you will see from this screenshot - there is a gds mech corps now in between my forces and it actually attacked to the west before the cavalry brigade was attacked. I do not see how this is possible other than an AI move error ignoring ZOCs.

And here is turn 6. In this turn as I watched the AI execute, somewhere around the 0:8 stage, it showed several corps just magically appeared just north of my line of forts & regiments.

They then moved to the various positions behind my lines. However, they clearly just appeared right behind my lines to start.

And so I went back and reloaded my end turn 5 and flipped into execution to catch instantaneous screenshots. You will note in the AI logistics phase that the Axis owns the territory.

And now the area is full of miraculously appearing soviet corps - note that some of the counters are not real - but about 6 corps are...

and they attacked out of their teleported to location as well and wreaked havoc on supply lines to the front.

Can anyone explain how they magically appeared? Prior to any movement phases or combat phases.

Note I grabbed this screenshot in the AI recon phase - when it is sending out lots of recon missions as part of the ai execution.

and for further information, I went back and loaded my end turn 5; prior to execution AI phase where the units magically appeared and walked an axis regiment back and forth across my property...so the units were not there prior to the AI starting execution of its turn.

That looks very bad. I can't explain it. Please send the save at the end of your turn right before the Soviet units appear if you have that save (or at the start of the Soviet turn where they appear. Please send to 2by3@2by3games.com and we'll take a look. Thanks.

Hi Joel - saves are on the way. I have two prior to AI execution and I have gone back and rerun and the same thing happens repeatedly. I also attempted another effort of re-loading the turn and then moving a bunch of axis units on to those hexes where the soviet units appeared - they still appeared.

The other thing I would suggest on the AI on the attack is that it appears to execute a lot of repeat failed attacks. I have seen this often in the 44 scenario w/AI set on impossible level. It will launch corps, division, or sapper brigade size attacks repeatedly with the same attacking unit on the same defending hex even after the first attack failed miserably. It might be useful to put a flag or check logic in for the AI so that it recognizes that it just tried an attack that failed and should be less likely to repeat it. Especially if it failed the attack miserably.
