effect of zone of control on movement

Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: The German-Soviet War 1941-1945 is a turn-based World War II strategy game stretching across the entire Eastern Front. Gamers can engage in an epic campaign, including division-sized battles with realistic and historical terrain, weather, orders of battle, logistics and combat results.

The critically and fan-acclaimed Eastern Front mega-game Gary Grigsby’s War in the East just got bigger and better with Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: Don to the Danube! This expansion to the award-winning War in the East comes with a wide array of later war scenarios ranging from short but intense 6 turn bouts like the Battle for Kharkov (1942) to immense 37-turn engagements taking place across multiple nations like Drama on the Danube (Summer 1944 – Spring 1945).

effect of zone of control on movement

Post by henri51 »

I must be missing something: the manual says that the movement cost to enter an enemy hex (presumably including an enemy zone of control) is 115-morale/15. Since morale is always less than 100 and movement points are never more than 100, this means that a combat unit could never enter an enemy-controlled hex! For example, if a unit had a morale of 75, the movement cost to enter an enemy hex would be 115-5=110 movement points, much larger than any movement points I have ever seen on a unit. There are no other explanations in the manual except for the confusing table where I got the above formula. The manual should have added a few examples.

What am I missing?[&:] What I am trying to find out is whether or not separation of a line of units by two hexes is enough to prevent adjacent enemy units from running through my lines and displacing my HQ units. In my games so far against the AI, the AI has not attempted to cross such lines, and I am not able to determine in advance whether or not my own units can move into an enemy hex or not. Sometimes they can and sometimes they can't, but I don't have a clue why[&:]

Probably whoever wrote the manual didn't think of order of operations when they wrote it, its probably:
(115-75)/15 = 2.6 MP, more resonable?

You might be right... It also states (rounded down) so 2.6 rounded down would be +2 cost to enter enemy zone of control (for motorized) units. Definitely sounds reasonable when compared to similar costs of other units.

edit> Whomever typed the formula into the manual maybe made a typo with the extra parenthesis on the end
+((115-unit morale)/15))

... if you assume the last parenthesis is in error... your 2.6 fits the bill. [:)]

Last parenthesis is a typo.

OK thx, so here is the effect of morale on number of points required to enter enemy hexes:
morale points
100 1
85 2
70 3
55 4

In other words, a morale of 50 requires 4 times as many points to enter an enemy hex. Or to put it another way, each drop in morale of 15 requires an extra movement point to enter an enemy hex.

I am still not quite clear on the effets of ZOCs on movement. For ZOC to ZOC movement the table in the manual says "+4 + same cost as for entering an enemy hex (This is in additionto the entering enemyhex charge that may also apply if entering a enemy hex)".I don;t understand this sentence. The "same cost" is the above formula, say +2 for a morale of 85.

Now I don't see how one can move from an enemy ZOC to an enemy ZOC without entering an enemy hex. Does the above quote mean that the penalty applies twice? In other words, +4 +2(morale) +2 (morale), for a total of +8 in addition to other costs and penalties? I still can't tell at a glance how likely it is that an enemy unit will be likely to break through my ZOCs to get at my HQs. For my German units, it is easier because the game shows the movement cost of each projected move, which is usually 8 for moving between enemy ZOCs and 2 for oving out of them into clear hexes.

I think the charge does apply twice when actually entering an enemy hex. You can move from an enemy ZOC to an enemy ZOC in a friendly hex too, provided both hexes are next to an enemy unit.
