Please don't rush out the patches

Post by Redmarkus5 »

This will sound funny coming from me, but now that I know what the open issues are I have found ways to work around most of them and I am enjoying the game. Rather than getting lots of interim patches that still have issues, or which reintroduce old problems, I prefer to continue learning the game system while I wait for a fully tested and solid major patch in 2011.

How do others feel about this?

I think the mouse issue needed an immediate fix. Those issues with a sense of urgency should be done as soon as practicable. That said on balance, I agree that its better to package a well tested unified product that hangs together well. From what I could glean that appears to be the plan.

With the holidays and Christmas in particular, other things will be drawing me away from the game so I don't really mind if it takes a while to get a quality patch/upgrade.

So far I installed just the single official patch and not the several beta patches.
I let the other people do the beta testing. [:D]
I'm completely happy with the current official patch.

After I turned off weather graphics my mouse issue mostly went away. I do have to watch the weather info area very closely though...

The only issue I see with the way they are doing it is if somehow people are on incompatible builds and try to do a PBEM.  Maybe put out any patched on 2 set days a week, if there are any patches.

The version Pavel put into test today made a huge difference for me. I have a slow computer that I use to test specific things but it's too slow to play the game. Pavel sped up the movement of units over the map, and also sped up combat and a few other things. Suddenly the slow computer looks like it might be able to manage the game. He made a fix for the mouse problems and I think he said he had one report from someone that was getting the problems that the fix improved things. This is all in testing now but it will be worth getting if it works. The tough part is that we've seen some of these technical issues get better for some and worse for others. What works well for one might be bad for someone else, and until it gets widespread use, we don't know how it's going to perform. We'll continue with the same process:

1) versions go to testers and sometimes to specific users that reported an important bug that has been fixed
2) release beta version when it seems to be working ok for testers
3) release an official version when it seems to be working for the wider community
All understanding comes after the fact.

A Beta Patch is ... well, a Beta Patch. Unless I have the specific problem that the BP is addressing I generally wait for the official patch. Those "lots of interim patches" have been issued in Beta primarily to address configuration dependent problems that became show-stopping issues for a few people. And my hat is off for the development team [&o] for making the effort to rush out emergency fixes for those problems. OTOH since a Beta Patch is ... a Beta Patch [:D] I usually let someone else go first to make sure it has not introduced other problems.

However I do admit that sometimes I find the new features that the Devs piggyback into some of these Betas are so irresistable that I just can't wait.[:)]
