Are numbers supposed to add up in battle losses?

Post by gingerbread »

See below ss of a battle - the defender shattered.

Adding up the diffs for kill/cap/dis gives 2526 men. To that we add 6181 escaped for a total of 8707, leaving 179 unaccounted for, but one would think that the disabled would be included in the escaped number, if so we get 560 (kill) + 1557 (cap) + 6181 (esc) = 8298 leaving 588. Where are they?

Also, guns add up 71+74 = 134, but 7 afv's are both lost and escaped. Granted, lost should include damaged afv's that can be repaired, but it feels like the proportion of damaged that managed to escape (7 out of 9) is very high! Besides, a German division commander reporting 9 enemy tanks destroyed but only had 2 wrecks to show when the scrap collectors came around would get a visit from higher HQ about inflating own successes. [;)]

BTW, does tank wrecks convert to resources for the side that holds the hex after battle? 1000's T-26 at 9.5 tons each is a lot of scrap iron!

Yeah, I know I should be playing to enjoy but I'm wired with an anomaly detector that sometimes won't shut off!

Edit: I see in 15.9.2 that damaged ground elements are captured, so what give about the Soviet afv's? Lost includes undamaged that are returned to the pool? If so, I thnk it is a bit misleading; if that held true for rifle squad type ground elements, the loss figure for men would be much higher.

I'm guessing the difference is due to damaged squads, although I don't know why the documented losses in the losses screen are lower than those in the battle, as a shattering division's damaged squads should be gone I believe.

I think there are several things going on here. The casualty column counts each damaged element as 1/2 a kill, while the permanent losses only counts elements that have been destroyed. Also, I think (but I'm not 100% sure) that the number of men, guns and weapons that list out at the start of the battle list damaged elements at full strength.

During development I found anomolies that could not be explained, and for which Gary had no answer other than to say that the various accounting methods he was using made it impossible for him to make it all add up correctly. In the end he felt that the casualties are being dealt with correctly, but there are accounting issues that he couldn't resolve in the way the numbers are reported. After wrestling with this multiple times during development and each time giving up, I don't think I'm going to have a satisfying answer for you. You have to take the numbers as approximations that give you good information, but are not 100% accurate. If you have a repeatable situation where you can lay out what isn't adding up, you can send a save to 2by3@2by3games.com along with information about what you think is not adding up. Thanks.

Oops, steps into it, didn't I... (Apropriate Kierkegaard quote!)

Sorry about that, and thanks for answering, Joel!
