Make me not want this

Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: The German-Soviet War 1941-1945 is a turn-based World War II strategy game stretching across the entire Eastern Front. Gamers can engage in an epic campaign, including division-sized battles with realistic and historical terrain, weather, orders of battle, logistics and combat results.

The critically and fan-acclaimed Eastern Front mega-game Gary Grigsby’s War in the East just got bigger and better with Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: Don to the Danube! This expansion to the award-winning War in the East comes with a wide array of later war scenarios ranging from short but intense 6 turn bouts like the Battle for Kharkov (1942) to immense 37-turn engagements taking place across multiple nations like Drama on the Danube (Summer 1944 – Spring 1945).

I primarily want to play as the Soviets. The PBEM forum seems to be kind of dead.

Is the German AI competent?

I ran a few turns of a test of a scenario that starts in April 1942 against the German AI. I launched an offensive with Bryansk Front, Southwest Front and 3rd Tank Army against the Hungarian 2nd Army. The AI pulled back to get some reserves on turn 1 and then cut off and wrecked the spearheads of the offensive on turn 2 when things got muddy. Near Rostov the Italian 8th Army cleared up some minor penetrations.

So I think the German AI is good even in a non-standard scenario.

A guy named Fallshirmjager primarily wants to play Soviets? Sounds a bit strange. [:D]

I imagine there are a lot of players who are interested in the rather different kinds of forces and solutions the
Soviets have. I think one area where this game is breaking a lot of new ground is in its ability to simulate the Red Army with
all its peculair strengths and weaknesses.

so far its great. a really good advance from War in Russia & Second Front. Its got a lot of the best aspects of War in the Pacific and TOAW in it as well. I played WiR for years PBEM and probably will with War in the East. I am glad i purchased it

Fallschirmjager, I feel you it is hard enough to spend time with you woman and AE. Now throwing WitE in the mix something got to give. Even with 36 hourse in a day that is not enough time to satisfy all.[:D][:D][:D]

I have been playing computer wargames since the 1980's. I fondly remember Kampfgruppe, Tigers in the Snow, Panthers in the Shadows, and my favorite game of all time, "Breakthrough in the Ardennes." Over the years I have played many wargames, and to date, "War in the East" has the best AI I have ever seen in a computer wargame. You should just give up and buy it. You need this game!

Oh I would play both sides if I purchased it. But the idea of playing as the Soviet and launching late war offensives with 2 million men backed up by 22,000 guns, 2000 tanks and 3,000 aircraft sounds appealing ;)
I like firepower in my wargames

My brother got me WITE for Christmas and I've been trying to get through the tutorial for the past several days. It's not that it seems really difficult, it's just that I guess I don't care enough to want to begin this game, or lifestyle, or whatever it is. Beer and pretzels? no, more like I.V. and bed pan IMO.

Magnificent piece of work I'm sure, but I guess after wargaming for 40 years I just don't have it in me anymore to absorb all this stuff.[:(]
