Static Inf. Div.

Post by Chocolino »

What are the "static" Infantry Div. meant for? (not to be mistaken for "frozen" units).

Are they best used for garrison duty in back areas or are they meant to hold front line sections where not much movement is anticipated?

I did notice that they are somewhat weaker than regular German Infantry Divs based on their TOE. But they are nonetheless formidable units when compared to some allied formations.

They can be used like ordinary infantry. The term "Static" refers the TOE they conform to not how they should be used in the game. The same is true of jager divisions or the 78th Sturm division. In game terms, they are all simply infantry divisions.

I thought they had special rules....I know they have been stripped of their equipment but not sure what else. Only like one hex movement? I havent tried them so I could be mistaken.

Jim. I think you are right. I believe the vehicles are removed from the unit and it become basically either becomes immobile or has limited mobility. Not sure though. I haven't used them yet.

There are "static" infantry divisions, which tend to be less mobile divisions with a focus on heavy weapons and units set to static, which means their vehicles are returned to the pool and they can move a maximum of 1 hex each turn unless using rail/naval movement. The first is a unit name, the second is a mode a unit can be in.

Thank you for all the explanations.

But we may be speaking about different unit types. The "static Inf. Div" in the attached screen shot (replacement in "41 GC) has clearly more than one hex movement and is surprisingly more mobile (in the game) than some regular German Infantry Divisions.

The divisions raised as part of the 13.Welle (“Wave”), and 14.Welle, the “bodenständige” divisions (commonly translated as ‘static’), created during October-November of 1940, were intended to be used as occupation forces. Each “Wave” had it’s own organization, depending on availability of personnel and equipment at the time of the unit’s initial organization. The divisions of the 13. and 14.Wellen had reduced motoized vehicles in their organization. In the regular infantry divisions, the regimantal PAK companies, recon elements, and supply columns were motorized. In the “bodenständige” divisions, the regimental PAK companies were horse-drawn, and only one supply column was motorized. They had much-reduced mobility, which reflects their intended role.

The other divisions that can be considered “static” are the 15.Welle, 700-series divisions. These units were raised with the express intent of being used as occupation troops in the East (although several ended up in the West). These divisions not only had a reduced complement of troops, but no heavy weapons, or antitank guns.

13.Welle – 302, 304, 305, 306, 319, 320, 321, 323, and 327.Infanterie-Divisionen (bo)
14.Welle – 332, 333, 335, 336, 337, 339, 340, and 342.Infanterie-Divisionen (bo)
15.Welle – 702, 704, 707, 708, 709, 710, 711, 712, 713, 714, 715, 716, 717, 718, and 719.Infanterie-Divisionen

As translation of "bodenstaendige" it makes sense. Thank you.

So they were indeed intended as garrison units even though other posters are correct, too in that you can (mis)use them happily as front line units - as I currently do.

Yes, the only difference between regular infantry divisions and the Static Infantry Divisions are how they were equipped. Do not confuse a 'Static Infantry Division' with a unit in STATIC mode. STATIC mode can be applied to any combat on-map unit and it reduces thats unit's mobility.

"Static" was just a term used to descibe the unit's ToE.
