A few Qustions before I purchase?

Post by Doant1946 »

First of all..Crappy computer nvidia 6200 pci only 2.66 ghz pentium 4..1gb of ram..Run ok?

Next I love Galactic Civ but i have been disappointed in a couple of space 4X games..mostly AI War..couldn't even make it through the tutorial..it was a total pain to finish...Is this one difficult to learn?..Is it immersive...MMO2 and Galactic civ are my types
thanks

Hi, Gorland. I think you meet the requirements to run Distant Worlds, but not with all 1400 stars, 700 might be your limit, I'm not sure, perhaps someone with a similar spec could confirm.

I liked GalCiv and MoO2, but never liked the look of AI war. I would say that DW sounds like your sort of game. It's extremely immersive, there's many different styles of playing and you can almost certainly play as the type of megalomaniac, or benevolant leader, you want. It has a reasonable learning curve, it can take some time and you'll probably find after weeks of play that you're still finding out new things.

I've come to the conclusion recently that this is now my favourite 4x game of all time. I prefer it to MoO2 and Birth of the Federation. Hope this helps. Oh, and check out some of the mods too, there's some good ones. [;)]

What about a intel core 2 duo 2.66? And wasn't Space Empires V a big disappointment?

My system: Intel Pentium 4 HT 3Ghz, Nvidia 7600GTS, 3G Ram

This runs just fine but with long loading time (couple of minutes at start up) and choppy ship movement when zooming way out.

Yes, but mods have helped there, especially Cpt. Kwok's Balance mod.
But I prefer this to SE5 now.

Hi Gorland,

It will run, but you'll want to make sure you update to the latest version and stick to the smaller galaxy sizes. I'd recommend 400 systems or less. There's still a lot of fun to be had at those sizes though.

I've played 1000 star galaxies on a Pentium IV, 2.66 Ghz with 2 GB of RAM. It sort of worked, even when I reached an empire with about 1000 colonies and some 10,000 ships total. The UI was slow to respond at that stage, screen updates choppy, loading huge lists (Expansion Planner, empire Ships & Bases dialog) took annoyingly long. But still borderline playable and no more aborts due to 'out of memory' since version 1.0.4.x.

Sticking to smaller galaxies would have been wise. The 2GB of physical RAM were absolutely necessary, but a faster processor wouldn't hurt either. DW is very processor limited. The graphics card probably doesn't matter much.

In the expansion I haven't progressed to a similar state in my recent game, yet.
