RE: STRATEGIC BOMBING OF JAPAN

Post by racndoc »

11/1-11/2/44

STRATEGIC BOMBING OF JAPAN

The 4Es and the carrier bombers firebomb Kobe for the 2nd consecutive turn. Again, there is good weather on 11/1 but thunderstorms on 11/2 ground all Allied strategic bombers. A level 813,000 fire is created this turn. Kobe has MP damage increased from 17(16) to 13(20), HI damage increases from 90(191) to 65(216) and LI from 159(282) to 121(320). Overall, the Allies score about 250 strategic loss points for a total of 21,852 strategic points.

RE: STRATEGIC BOMBING OF JAPAN

SUBS

SS Segundo sinks E Kosagaki Maru off Aomori.

CENTPAC

Miyake-jima is enlarged to a level 3 airfield and a 5th VMF squadron with Corsairs is staged in.

All the CVs/CVLs/CVEs make port and begin to rearm and take on replacement AC and pilots. Its very time consuming to go thru nearly 80 carriers manually to ensure that all have been brought up to the proper TOE but it has to be done....sigh.....I alluded to this before....the end war for the Allies becomes a logistical nightmare. Keep in mind that I have forward bases at Guam/Tinian/Saipan/Babeldaob/Aparri and _VERY_ forward bases at Naha/Nago/Amami Oshima/Tanegashima/ Miyake-jima that need to have supply and fuel convoys _MANUALLY_ unloaded every turn. Add to that going thru the 1000 plus land based 4Es and USAAF escort fighters that need pilot replacements. And I want to complicate this with a 30-40 division land invasion of Japan?

The fires continue to burn at Kobe 2 days aftere the bombing stops but only another 70 strategic bombing losses are scored for a total of 21,924 strategic loss points.

The large USN transport TFs complete unloading at Miyake-jima and head back to port at Babedaob. StoneAge anticipated this and staged AC into Pagan to try and hit the transports on their way back to port. Fortunately, with the arrival of 5 VMF Corsair squadrons at Miyake-jima, the CVEs that were providing CAP there were released and were able to escort the transports out of harm's way. The Japanese naval bombers attacking from Pagan were virtually wiped out:

The CVs and CVLs complete rearming and taking on AC replacements at Naha and depart Okinawa to join up with the CVEs off Tanegashima.

The 4E strategic bombers continue to R&R.

A couple of turns ago I had a new B-29 squadron arrive at Wendover AFB in Utah....the 509th CG/39th BS. I staged them to Tinian and then discovered that I couldnt place them on city attack....they are an A Bomb bomber group......1st time Ive seen that in AE. I went through the pilot roster and a couple of famous names stood out......Colonel Paul Tibbets(Enola Gay) and Captain Bock(Bock's Car).

SWEEPS WEEK

Post by racndoc »

11/7-11/8/44

The 4Es remain on R&R as bad weather envelopes most, if not all, of Japan.

Im trying some new approaches to the air war now. Im sweeping every airfield in Japan that recon shows to be basing fighters. The VMF Corsair squadrons at Miyake-jima are sweeping Tokyo/Yokohama/Nagoya while the P-47D25s at Tanegashima are sweeping the airfields in southern Japan. Last turn Japan lost 68 AC in A2A vs 7 Allied.

With bad weather forecast for all of Japan again next turn, Im placing all the B-24s/Liberators on "Commander's Choice" for city bombing attacks. The weather is really dictating the course and tempo of the air war now.

The B-29s remain stood down at Tinian.....many of the groups are understrength as repalcements have not kept up with losses. Im just receiving a new model.....the B-29-25.....and Im starting to upgrade the squadrons to the newer plane type.

Army and Marine fighters sweep all of Japan's major cities. StoneAge grounded most of his fighters to avoid this......which was just what we wanted......later in the turn all the strategic bombers would go in virtually unopposed. As it was, Japan lost 34 AC in A2A vs 2 Allied AC.

StoneAge did manage a successful kamikaze attack against Allied surface forces at Miyake-jima as I was massively undercapped:

So I put all the B-24s/Liberators on "Commander's Choice" and targeted HI/LI/Refineries. Looks like the computer targeted several cities with poor weather conditions and also did a lot of MP area bombing as opposed to the precision bombing I had requested.

I cant argue with the results however.....the computer scored over 475 strategic loss points for a total of 22,398 strategic loss points....thats better than Ive done in quite a few turns. Maybe I should just sit back and let the computer take over the strategic bombing offensive. Or....maybe the computer cheats just like the AI and ignores the poor weather.

Next turn the weather is bad everywhere over Japan save for extreme overcast over Nagasaki......I cant believe how bad the weather is in the fall over Japan.....it makes Seattle look like Palm Springs. Im putting all the B-24s/Liberators as well as all the carrier bombers on area bombing over Nagasaki. The MP at Nagasaki is relatively untouched....13(1)...... so Im hoping to gett a big firestorm.

Here is a screenshot of the damage to BC Repulse following the Kamikaze attack:

Alf Suicide Bombers? Either your opponent is getting desperate or doesn't realize that such a puny floatplane with practically no bomb load (16kg if I recall) won't cause much havoc.

That suicide bomber barely scratched the paintwork! The whole thing must be highly frustrating for Stoneage - he finally gets a hit on a decent military target only to have it literally bounce off.

JonReb and nicwb.....thaks for your comments. Ive been aboard BB Missouri maybe a dozen times. They have an interpretive historical display around the area where the ship was hit by a kamikaze off Okinawa......the railing is slightly bent as are a couple of deck plates but no serious structural damage occurred. They ending up burying the remains of the kamikaze pilot at sea with full military honors.

I didnt post all the air attacks against my surface TF at Miyake-jima but I think that StoneAge is sending every plane type he has....including Alfs and Dinahs....in an attempt to make the CAP planes use up all their ammo.

Army fighters based at Tanegashima and VMF squadrons at Miyake-jima continue to sweep the skiies over every major Japanese city. For the most part, StoneAge grounds his interceptors which allows Allied 4Es to go in unmolested later in the turn. At the end of the turn, Japan loses another 45 AC vs zero Allied AC in A2A combat.

The poor weather again throws off aim and only a level 279,000 fire is started on 11/11. On 11/12, the planes dont even hit Nagasaki due to the bad weather.

Fortunately, I placed the B-29s at Tinian on "Commander's Choice" with refineries as the target and once again the computer delivers:

The B-29s hammer the refineries at Tokyo and over 600 strategic loss points are scored for a total of 23,020 strategic loss points.

I should probably just let the computer take over target selection but with _clear_ weather forecast for tomorrow at Nagasaki and Osaka Im placing the B-24s/Liberators and carriers bombers on precision bombing of Nagasaki HI/LI/naval shipyards/merchant shipyards/resources while the B-29s will precision bomb LI at Osaka.

RE: STRATEGIC BOMBING OF JAPAN

Post by racndoc »

11/13-11/14/44

CENTPAC

P-47D25s continue to sweep major cities in southern Japan while Corsairs based at Miyake-jima continue to sweep major cities in central Japan.

Very few Japanese fighters are flying CAP any more.....Japan loses 12 AC in A2A combat vs 2 Allied AC.

Miyake-jima is enlarged to a level 4 airfield......when it reaches level 5 we will revisit Tokyo with the strategic bombers.

The damage is massive at Nagasaki. LI damage increases from 372(269) to 313(328), HI damage increases from 84(67) to 74(77), resource damage increases from 330(591) to 194(727), merchant shipyard damage from 124(105) to 74(160) and the naval shipyards are virtually destroyed from 246(155) to 40(361).

Over 800 strategic loss points are inflicted for a total of 23,836 strategic loss points....the best strategic bombing performance in weeks.

The B-29s are heavily fatigued and have maintenance issues so they will be stood down. Over half a dozen B-29 reinforcement groups..... the XXI Bomber Command...... have arrived in the last 3 turns and are now staging from the US to Tinian. When the B-29s fly again they should be reinforced another 60-70 bombers.

The B-24s/Liberators on Okinawa will also be stood down for the same reasons.....maintenance and plane fatigue.

After hitting Nagasaki for a few turns Im seeing the advantage of close ranged targets.......the B-24s on Tanegashima and Amami Oshima are hardly fatigued at all and have minor maintenance issues so they will contunue to bomb along with the carrier bombers but now we will focus on very short ranged targets so we can increase the number of sorties and the operational tempo. The major cities of central Japan will be put on hold for a bit.

The computer seems to be doing a better job of targeting than myself and Allied sweeps have grounded/destroyed most Jap CAP so Im going to be using "Commander's Chioce" more often. The carrier bombers will be placed on CC/LI, the B-24s at Amami Oshima will be placed on CC/aircraft factories and the B-24s at Tanegashima will be targeted for Nagasaki/LI.

Allied fighters continue to sweep major Japanese cities but the Japanese interceptors are mostly grounded.....Japan loses 23 AC in A2A combat this turn vs zero Allied AC.

STRATEGIC BOMBING OF JAPAN

The B-24s at Amami Oshima that were set on CC/aircraft factories are directed by the computer to area bomb MP at Nagasaki and Fukuoka instead. The carrier bombers set on CC/LI bomb LI at Nagasaki and Fukuoka. The B-24s at Tanegashima hit LI at Nagasaki as ordered. I dont understand why the computer bombs MP when ordered to hit aircraft factories but I cant argue with the results.....over 520 strategic loss points are scored this turn for a total of 24,456 strategic loss points. LI damage at Nagasaki increases from 313(328) to 217(424).

Next turn, the B-29s will stay grounded......they are a mess right now....only 145 out of 340 B-29s are available for flight ops next turn....and thats after 2 days of rest.

The B-24s/Liberators on Okinawa remain grounded for maintenace and repairs. The B-24s at Tanegashima will be placed on short ranged(10 hexes) CC/LI so they should be able to fly almost every turn...or at least 4 out of 5 turns. The B-24s at Amami Oshima will be targeting Hiroshima LI(clear weather) and the carrier bombers will be targeted with CC/shipyards.

The computer controlled bomber groups, to a large extent, ignored orders to precision bomb LI and shipyards and instead waste their bombloads on MP in a 2 bit town like Kurame. But once again I cant argue with the results.....over 800 strategic loss points are scored for a total of 25,266 strategic points. In Nagasaki....with probably the greatest concentration of shipyards in the entire Japanese empire.....merchant shipyards are at 8(226) and naval shipyards are at 9(392).....virtually wiped out. I have to think that many more strategic loss points are scored for each point of damage to shipyards and refineries than for the other industries......I cant find anything in the game rules regarding this.

However, upon re-reading the air rules, Ive discovered that a maximum 40 million fire level is possible....Ive only made it to aound 2 million so there is a lot ,more out there than what Ive been able to achieve. The rules also stated that it is easier to start a firestorm in large MP cities....I have repeatedly found this to be true! My largest remaining MP target is Tokyo....with some 96 undamaged MP....and Im saving my final and largest firebombing raid for this unfortunate metropolis. The rules also state that fires are reduced by a factor of 10 every 12 hours......so if you start a 1 million level fire it will be reduced to 100,000 12 hours later and only 10,000 1 day later.

I think that I have found a good niche for the carrier bombers regarding precision city bombing.....they seem to be very effective hitting shipyards and very ineffective hitting LI/HI. Of course, the carrier bombers have always done well in area bombing MP.

The change in my strategic bombing campaign to precision bombing in southern Japan(from area bombing MP in major cities in central Japan) is working wonders......I had been 10,000 points short of autovictory for months and was unable to close the gap at all. But now with the new startegic bombing focus the victory points now stand at 96,000 Allied to 33,900 Japanese. At this current rate.......another 7000-8000 points of strategic bombing should get the autovictory......and I could still have a chance of ending the war and getting the boys home by Christmas 1944!

The Allied carriers will return to port next turn to rearm and take on AC replacements. The B-24s at Amami Oshima are suffering from maintenance and fatigue so they will be stood down next turn as are the B-24s/Liberators on Okinawa and the B-29s on Tinian. The B-24s at Tanegashima will continue to hit short ranged targets in southern Japan.....Im using them turn after turn and they seem to be very resistant to fatigue and maintenance issues when attacking lightly defended targets at range<11 hexes. Next turn, the B-24s at Tanegashima are placed on CC/LI.....hopefully the computer doesnt send them after MP again.

Hi, Adm. Spruance happy New Year.
And.........What about on the ground invasion to the home islands?
Here we are.............. sitting.............. watching................eating popcorn and not seing the Marines do nothing[>:]
I´m fear Japan surrenders and we´ll haven´t seen an assault as debis
What about the rest of the Pacific, and China and Burma ....?
We also want an atomic bomb, at least in the last turn you´ll go to play ( I Know if you use it, the victory conditions will cange)
All this is a joke, of course, you are doing a great job [&o][&o][&o]but now the public wants more. At this stage of the war you have more posibilities and resources to do new evil things......[:D]

RE: STRATEGIC BOMBING OF JAPAN

Post by racndoc »

Igel...thanx for your comments. I had originally planned in early 1944 for an invasion of Japan around Sept/Oct. 1944, However, the strategic bombing campaign started out so well......I scored a quick 10,000 points from it and only needed another 10,000 to achieve a 3:1 autovictory..... that I thought that the bombing would end the war before I could get ashore in Japan with sufficient forces to make a difference. Hindsight shows that I was dead wrong.....the strategic points have become more costly in terms of lost aircraft and much tougher to amass after all the easy large MP targets were worked over for the 1st time.

The final outcome of the war was pretty certain by late 1943. StoneAge has been gracious enough to slug it out for another 180 turns in 1944 against hopeless odds as he wanted to see how later war fighters, strategic bombing and kamikazies worked out.....as did I.
To ask StoneAge to suffer through another 180 turns in 1945 for a final land invasion would be too much to ask...even now he is counting down the turns to 1/1/45 and he told me that we have fewer than 20 turns remaining. I agree with you that it would be interesting to see how an Allied land invasion of Japan would work out.....and also in some 25 plus games of WitP I have yet to drop an atomic bomb and I would like to see that...but I think that the mental stress of getting hammered turn after turn without any hope for another 14 months would be a lot to ask for from an opponent.

In regards to the rest of the PTO....the Allies control all of Burma/Thailand/Indochina/Malaya and we have a ceasefire in China....I thought that if I sent all of SEAC into China it would really destabilize the game.

Now having said all that....I have been massing an amphibious invasion fleet at Babeldaob for a possible invasion of Japan. I will add up all the shipping at Babeldaob at the end of the game to see what kind of amphibious lift capacity the Allies have at this point in the war.

StoneAge has massed most of the Japanese home army on railroads for immediate respone to any invasion beachead. I have prepped over 30 divisions 100% for Kochi on Shikoku and Kanoya on Kyushu....both are off the railroad net and would be perfect bases for the Allies to go ashore.

An absolutely wasted turn.....some 80 strategic loss points are scored....not even enough to offset the 4 AKs lost off Tanegashima.

Im firing the commander from "Commander's Choice" and next turn Im focusing on shipyards...they seem to be more "hittable" than LI/HI at this point in the war and it seems as if they offer more points per hit.

The CVEs at Tanegashima have completed rearming and will target repair shipyards at Hiroshima while the B-24s at Tanegashima will target shipyards at Okayama.

The Allies score an amazing 1100 strategic loss points this turn....that sets a record for the game so far and the total of strategic loss points is now at 26,900. In fact.....the Allies now have over 97,000 victory points to japan's 34,000 victory points....another 6000-7000 points and the Allies will score an autovictory.

I dont have any proof but it seems to me that it is much easier for bombers to take out shipyards/refineries/armaments than HI/LI and apparently the former targets provide many more strategic points than the later targets.

Miraculously, the weather forecast for next turn is 90% overcast or BETTER over all of Japan.....this is by far the best weather I have seen forecasted since the strategic bombing campaign began in July 1944. With the combination of good weather and lack of Japanese interceptors I will change the bombing strategy for next turn....instead of 1 or 2 massive blows Japan will suffer the death of a thousand pinpricks.

The USN fleet carriers join the CVEs off the coast of Japan. The B-29s will be rested but all the carrier bombers and the B-24s/Liberators will strike a dozen different targets in 7 cities.......Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Hiroshima, Okayama, Kobe and Osaka.

The level 4 airfield at Miyake-jima is 89% of the way to level 5 and should be completed next turn.....then several hundred medium bombers will be staged in to assist in the aerial blitz on Tokyo.

RE: STRATEGIC BOMBING OF JAPAN

Post by Bradley7735 »

It's a bit late for this advice, but if you expand high point bases, you'd get some more points. I know you're already micromanaging up to your eyebrows, but it might be worth your time to move a few engineering units to low developed bases that are worth significant points to the allies.
The older I get, the better I was.

RE: STRATEGIC BOMBING OF JAPAN

Post by racndoc »

Bradley7735.....for the most part I have built up every base that I have captured to max levels as I advanced across the Pacific.....although I am sure that there are quite a few bases in the Philippines/Malaya/Indochina/Thailand/Burma that could be further developed. As you say....I am currently in "micromanagement hell" right now and I dont see myself doing that for a very incremental increase in VPs. However.....I am considering using my BBs and CAs to bombard coastal Japanese cities for additional strategic loss points.

Well the weather wasnt nearly as good as had been advertised. Still....the Allies score nearly 700 strategic points for a total of 27,590 strategic points.

Miyake-jima is now a level 5 AF and Ive begun to stage in hundreds of medium bombers. All of the 4Es are rested this turn......save for the Liberators on Okinawa.....as we put everyone on R&R until the weather clears over Tokyo. The carrier bombers will again attack multiple targets across Japan next turn but will avoid Yokohama/Tokyo.

Overall, the Allies inflict another 350 strategic point loss on Japan for a total of 27,940 strategic points. In addition....StoneAge sends a couple of naval air strikes against the Allied carriers and gets decimated.....Japan loses 45 AC in A2A combat vs 6 Allied AC.

The weather looks almost universally bad across Japan next turn so ALL the 4Es will be stood down while the carrier bombers attempt to find a few targets with decent weather. If we ever see a day of decent weather over Tokyo virtually all my 4Es will be ready to go. More medium bombers stage into the crowded airfields on Miyake-jima.

I am adding a new wrinkle however......several bombardment TFs with over a dozen BBs will naval bombard Fukuoka next turn. We will see how effective the 14", 15" and 16" projectiles are at rototilling Japanese industries.

Interestingly......a mere 80 strategic loss points were scored this turn for a total of 28,022 strategic loss points. This must be a bug or something.....I think that I scored more than 120 hits on industries so it should have been more like 1000 points.....oh well.

The fleet carriers return to port to rearm and take on AC replacements. The CVEs remain offshore of Japan and their Avengers are placed on naval attack.

The weather forecast for next turn is......surprise!.......horrible nearly everywhere but Yokohama and Nagoya.. Im putting all the medium bombers at Miyake-jima on city bombing of Yokohama.....its only a 2 hex range so they should be at full strength for the assault on Tokyo when the weather clears. The B-24s on Tanegashima will target the Mitsubishi engine plants at Nagoya at 10 hex range.

Meanwhile.....the B-29s on Tinian sit on the tarmac at Tinian waiting for their chance to rain hell on Japan.

Meanwhile.....StoneAge manages to sneak a surface TF of E boats to Miyake-jima during the one exposed day where were are changing the guard with the protective surface TF and wkeaks havoc with the massed AC on the airfields there which are parked wingtip to wingtip:

We lose almost 80 AC on the ground at Miyake-jima and the service facilities are badly damaged. In fact......if the recon is to be believed....StoneAge caused more damage to the airfield at Miyake-jima with E boats and NO nightime spotters than we did at Fukuoka with 9 BBs, 14 cruisers and over a dozen naval spotters flying at night.....not to mention the BBs/CAs/CLs that hit Fukuoaka the turn before.

I had placed over 400 CVE Avengers on naval attack to protect against just this sort of evenrtuality.....but evidently they were grounded by ......surprise!......bad weather. Well it was a daring, well executed attack on StoneAge's part and I will just chalk up the rest nof it to the vagaries of war.

The fleet carriers rearm and take on AC replacements at Tanegashima.

Mitsubishi Ha-33 hits 15
Mitsubishi Ha-32 hits 5

The Allies net another 140 strategic loss points for a total of 28,166 strategic loss points.

The medium bombers on Miyake-jima were to have targeted Yokohama but......surprise!.......they are grounded for 2 days by yet even more bad weather.

The poor weather once again is impacting the course and tempo of the strategic bombing campaign.

The weather forecast for Tokyo next turn is once again bad weather so the firebombing attack is kept on hold for yet another turn. With decent weather forecasts tomorrow for Okayama and Kagoshima, the B-24s at Tanegashima will target Okayama LI while the Amami Oshima B-24s will target Kagoshima LI ....I dont like precision bombing LI but there just arent many other intact industries left to target.
