Terrain Types change w/ Weather?

Post by larryfulkerson »

Here's the first turn of Autum Fog and I've taken a "before" movement of the German units and an "after" and made it into a "movie" to see the German moves but I noticed that the terrain in many many hexes looks like it changes to another type or something. Does the terrain type change according to the weather or something?

Larry,
I think you're seeing the world turning into a muddy mess.

As I did stand my watch upon the hill,
I looked toward Birnam, and anon methought
The wood began to move

I'm not sure what is going on here, but I feel like it's not the mud taking over. When I open the scenario in the editor I get what is seen in this screen shot. Many of the forest type hexes appear to be covered by the mud, but many others aren't. It oddly looks like the covered forests are running along two hex horizontal lines.

When the scenario is opened for play, it doesn't look exactly like the editor view, but is similar. Then as you play, some of the forests appear, either during movement or between turns. My question is, does the mud overide the forest in some cases ?

Recon Level = 5 for the opening turns. But recon doesn't affect the terrain view, eh ?

Mud should not obscure a hex's original type of terrain. It has always been visible through a hex's original terrain. If forests vanish there must be something improper going on. Maybe the emerald pine beetle or acid rain.

I think it has something to do with the graphic files.

Steve, you're using classic tiles only? Do you use alternate graphics for GUI stuff like i.e. for brass cursor, movement arrows?

Have you edited the map as an xml file?

I do use the classic graphics. Graphics files are a bit of a mystery to me, so I try to not to mess with them. I don't think I use any alternate GUI's, to my knowledge. I'd rather not change to new graphics unless I have to. Maybe somebody can try what I did - open any scenario in the editor and fill the map with mud and watch it change the map. Maybe with new graphics this doesn't happen ?

I just tried it - even using ACOW those bands appear. Probably goes back to TOAW I. How many of these issues have remained hidden for more than a decade?

Good news is that the new, PNG graphics do not have this problem.

Yeah. Can't say that I'd be too crazy about having to switch graphics to avoid this.
