GC Losses Benchmark: Verge of Winter

Post by Q-Ball »

The Summer/Fall '41 Campaign is over in my first GC vs. AI, level Normal. It is beginning of Turn 23 (dec 41)

What is a reasonable benchmark for losses? I can't tell if my losses are "High" or "Low". My gut tells me they are high on both sides, but here goes:

AXIS:
455,000 Troops
1,800 AFVs
1,900 Aircraft

SOVIET:
4.35 Mil Troops
14,700 AFVs
9,400 Aircraft

Soviet Tank losses include 1,500 T-34s and 800 KVs, in addition to hordes of long-term useless types (T-26,BTs, etc)

For the most part, a 10-1 kill ratio in '41 seems to be the norm, anything higher helping the Germans, anything lower the Soviets.

Is this about the benchmark, or will I have problems this winter?

(PS, in terms of space, we have Leningrad, the Finns are free, and pretty much a straight-line front from Novgorod to Stalino, nothing special in the Center)

Based on my tests, and comparing your numbers to where I was in my field marshal Noob AAR, you are in much better shape than I was in any of my tests. You have taken out 1 million more than I managed. AFV losses are lower.

If you have the Finns in action, the GE will have a shorter line to defend, and you should be able to keep the panzers and Rumanians out of the line, which is a good thing. Novgorod - Stalino is a little behind par - I started the winter about 8-10 hexes ahead of that, so I think your 1942 start line will be behind historical, apart from Leningrad of course, but the Axis will be stronger, and SU weaker than historical.

As of Turn 17 but nothing significant occurred during the Mud and Snow period except screen and build

German Losses

A/c: 1739

Russian Losses

Troop losses/POW: 3,927k/2,887k

Voronezh to Mius on turn 17 could see them isolated by supply when the mud arrives - you will need to be spot on with your rail conversions in the south to support that advance.

Thanks for the replies.....because of what everyone said about the winter, I prioritized taking Leningrad, and also constantly chose to finish encirclements rather than drive deeper. I really was trying to destroy units, more than make forward progress. Of course, reaching the Svir helps alot, because there were about 500,000 Soviets bagged around Leningrad, even though it took 4 turns to clear.

The loss report says nearly 400 Soviet Divisions destroyed, including 264 Rifle Divisions.

I'll be really interested to see how 1942 turns out, as this should really show the swings and roundabouts of increasing SU losses vs. a worse than historical 1942 start line.

Actually I was able to supply on the Mius but Voronezh was too far. Next time I will pull back before the mud hits (assuming I can get that far again)

Gosh, I'm on my 4th try to the mud and never had such success, or even close QBall.  The closest I got was 3.2 mil.  You make me feel so inferior. [:(][:D]

Did you build a rail line straight through Ztown or Dtown? I usually dip towards the Crimea, but I note you got Sevastopol too, so I'd be interested to know which route you took with your rail conversion.

Left the Crimea to muddle through with the automatic repairs while I went straight to Ztown then east of Dtown to Stalino.

I had a screen east of the stop line extending to just west of Rostov that went out of supply and got counterattacked. Once again reached a little too far there.

In general the Russians were so hammered in the far south that I didn't suffer for being out of supply in the mud. In the south the last few turns before the mud were advancing against a totally collapsed defense: I hastied every Russian unit encountered south of Ryazan and routed every one of them until I got to Voronszh and Rostov.
