Here we have the all too familiar Cat-Box of Smolensk and Vyazma. Again I need to cobble together another line to hold for a turn.

The rough terrain hexes are your defensive friends, especially for rifle units.
Very true and I cherish every one I can get my boys dug in on. But it seems to me that the "SWAMP" for defense is the place to be!

He has not done the damage to you numbers wise that he needs to do, so you should be able to slow him alot in the next few turns. Watch out for any large groups of panzers though, if he really wants to break thru that's what he will do. It is what almost happened to me on turn 9. Seems people comment more on your AAR, I must be boring[:D]
Keep fighting the good fight sir, your doing well.
Your not boring at all! And aside from yourself, randallw and my STAVKA Guru ComradeP few people comment regularly. Though many have chimed in here and there. Welcome one and all! I could certainly use some inspiring suggestions.....[;)]

Gomel area where he is pressing me. I really need to try and prevent a link-up between AGC and AGS

I'm worried about a break-through south of Kiev and a link-up with AGC and AGS! Can't keep all the divisions in the south diverted here.

Coastal Army situation.....The Crimea just had 2 more "depleted" divisions spawn there. With the 2 divisions already there that area might have to fend for itself.

Continuing to be a great read
Its a very useful AAR for a complete newbie like myself, as it gives you a real insight into what goes on, what to expect and that kind of thing.
Based on finishing one game of "Road to Leningrad" (Normal difficulty, Axis Minor Win (Yeah!), then Russian rifle units in swamps are very, very, very hard to shift

The loss situation for Germany looks very grim. I doubt an 8.7 : 1 loss ratio will do it for Germany in summer 41.
I think no way he gets Leningrad, and things in the south are going quite poorly for Germany.
The only danger area for USSR seems to be the Vyazma area. But I think it might be tough for Germany to continue to drive on Moscow without better progress to the north and south of that drive.
Nice job Tophat.

That massed armor south of Kiev means trouble, consider moving back before he encircles you[X(]
You have the ability to arouse various emotions in me: please select carefully.
RE: Tophat1812(REDS) vs Moses(Krauts and friends)
Yeah, it definitely looks like he's planning on a wide encircling move - force you to abandon the city or lose quality divisions trying to defend it.

He'll eventually feel those gun losses and he should begin to feel the manpower losses. His AFV losses are not too bad.
Many AAR's are not being heavily commented on currently, perhaps because many people are still learning the game.
Tophat, one thing you could do is create cavalry armies. Personally, I'm a big fan of single-combat unit type armies as the Soviets, as it usually makes the most of the skills of the leader. The majority of the leaders have a mediocre to decent skill for either infantry or mechanized combat, but an abysmal skill for the other one. As such, creating a cavalry army with a leader with a good mechanized rating is a good idea in my opinion. Similarly, I create armies with 24 Tank brigades later on. As I keep the armies attached to STAVKA, there's usually no penalty when they're helping other units out. For the Soviets centralization=good, decentralization=bad.
What does your support unit situation look like, have you formed anything? What does your average HQ have?

Thank,thank......unfortunately he is across the dneper south of Kiev with many panzer and mobile divisions. Looks like he is aiming for a breakout and encirclement. I have got to run out of kiev and deploy delaying checkerboard style.then pray for Mud.

I was hoping to hear that the AFV losses were a concern for him.......not that bad is major cause for concern to me. He might just get his infantry stuck in Moscow's suburbs by MUD SEASON! GOOD!!!!

Cavalry or Mech Armies sounds good.I was waiting until the advent of the Tank brigades but why wait? You are correct in good infantry commanders simply for the most part suck at mech abilities and vice versa.
I'll look at my support units but frankly aside from disbanding much of the corps support units and setting 0..I left them alone. I really should start forming construction batts or bdes. I'll take a screen of a typical Corps and Army command showing support units.

Here is an example of a very mediocre leader at best. Can't believe he has a 1 win and 2 loss record! I'd have expected worse from him. Shows terrain can help-out anybody. Time for competant commander to come to the fore!

He'll be an infantry Leader for now,but when I get more armor formations he'll be leading tanks in the counter-attack!
