COTA scenarios possible?

Post by BigDuke66 »

I think under COTA there were some attempts to make HTTR scenarios but it didn't work correct as some ground features(I think dikes) were missing, how is it now with BFTB and COTA scenarios?
Is there everything necessary in BFTB to re-make COTAs Crete scenarios?

No can do without significant work from us I'm afraid. We would need to convert and revise the COTA estabs, maps and scenarios. That would take some time as there have been significant changes. If there was enough interest we could consider it and release a BFTB ex pack. We would need to charge for this.

So who would want this?

So who would want this?

This is almost a change of subject, but IF the new editor that Paul has described is forthcoming, then the user base could migrate the old data into the BftB estabs.

What would be needed?

-The ability to view the CotA data in a form from it which can be easily manipulated/copied (such as a spreadsheet).
-The ability to paste the CotA data into a similar pre-xml BftB format in which it can be manipulated and, subsequently, converted into a BftB-compliant .xml file, whereupon it can be recompiled into a proper estab.
-Knowledge of what values are currently in use and which are not enabled in the code. If this info is already available, I'm unaware of it.

In suggesting the above, I realize completely that there are fundamental differences between the data structures of BftB and CotA. However, I can't help but think that the CotA data can be "rearranged" and/or augmented in such a way as to allow for its introduction to the BftB tables. If I'm wrong in this regard, feel welcome to straighten me out.[;)]

As much as I've enjoyed some of the COTA scenarios, I'd much rather the development be on bringing other areas of the conflict into the BftB world. I mean we have COTA as a product that still plays just fine. As I see it, the effort to massage the data and recode the AI to support COTA doesn't warrant the few engine enhancements paybacks we'd get from it. Especially if it eats into future newer projects for the Command Ops engine.

If the conversion is a matter of time and effort in taking the existing data and populating new data structures, and map meshes etc then I'm sure with the appropriate editing tools the community here would put in the donkey work. However, I suspect the AI routines might need a total recode to assimilate whats in BftB. I don't know this. Just speculating and talking off the top of my head really.
