Grace - Is it as good as it looks

Post by Cavalry Corp »

Just about to get the Grace in 44 ( all my CV are still afloat ) . I was wondering how good this plane is as it looks a killer to replace the Jill .

Any thoughts or comments?

I currently use the Grace, and I gotta say its outstanding for recon, naval strikes, and ASW.

It is May 44 ( witp pbem 42-45 scn ) . I have had two carriers badly damaged Soryu is still on 63

All the rest are OK , I think I have 10 CV :) and lost 3 BB ( the allies have lost I think 7BB , mostly British )

Allies lost 5 CV in late 42 , they are on the offensive everywhere again but the outer perimiter of important bases is holding.

Currently my biggest problem is all the B24/ 29 ESP in Burma etc

Grace is a divebomber. Only a few TB units can upgrade to it. But now that Judies got shafted, it's the best Japanese divebomber by a large margin...

As far as I can tell that is not true. If you look in the editor, or the game you will see that all the CV TB sentais have the grace at the end of their upgrade line. (This is what I see in stock scen 2, and in RA too. I suspect scen 1 is the same)

About it being a good dive bomber...I don't think so. 2x250 kg bombs is not as good as 1x500kg. And I highly doubt that you could really use the long range of the Judy(before patch) or the Grace in '44, so payload matters more...

Historically, I think they made about 100 of these. What is the possible build rate?

The D4Y4 Judy is the best. The additional range of Grace isn't useful from CVs ( which have their max launch range set at 8 hexes for strike packages ) and an 800 Kg bomb does a damn sight more damage than 2 x 250 Kg ones. With an 800 Kg bomb you might end up taking out those BBs. With 250s you'll just kill the odd FlAK tub or two.

Yes the Grace is the upgrade to the Jill Torpedo plane, it carries a single 18 inch torpedo or 1700lbs or for extended range I believe 2 x 250kg bombs. Also armed to the teeth with a pair of 20mm cannons in the wings. Its also one of the fastest torpedo planes with a max speed around 350mph.

I think 2x250kg is better than 1x500kg, particularly against USN carriers, which are the primary target. Each bomb seem to make a separate attack roll, thus you are more likely to actually hit. More hits seem to translate into more chances of causing fuel or ammo explosion (at least I don't see heavier American bombs cauing those more often than Japanese 250-kg ones). 1x800kg is better, but D4Y4 arrives several months later, unless accelerated, is slower, more vulnerable and flies only to 6 hexes with full payload, not even using carriers' full range. Plus, if TB squadrons can upgrade to Grace, you can avoid producing DBs and TBs separately.

And I looked through the torpedo squadrons in the Scen 2 game: looks like the Tracker was correct, saying that only 4 of them can upgrade to Graces. Bleh. This makes B7M a considerably less attractive option, particularly as most of IJN's land-based light bomber squadrons fly TBs, and indeed TBs are generally a better choice for them.

Well if you like the Grace, play Downfall. I have already shot down 500 of them.

It has saved me a few times. And good for recon too.
