increasing the galaxy view un-selects the ship to which I wish to give the 'move to' command.

Post by elanaahova »

i'm still new to DW + expansion. I sometimes buy info off pirates - usually just before i destroy their base. sometimes i get info on a location to checkout. its usually a great distance away.

the only way i seem to be able to get my long range explorer /or long range construction ship to go to the site is to issue movement orders for many shot hops. its tedious. is there a way to use the various menus (not automate) to issue one movement order to the ship? The problem i'm having is that after selecting the ship, i can't give it as 'move to here' order at the far away site because i have to change the main screen view, (pull it out) so i can see the site I want to move the ship to. but when i do that, i lose the lock on the ship i had just selected. -ie increasing the galaxy view window un-selects the ship to which I wish to give the 'move to' command.

How do you deal with these 'visit far away site' commands?

Why do you use the mousewheel to pull out? Select the ship, then either select the target through a menu and display/select it and use the "back arrow"
to reselect the ship, or use the shortcuts next to the overview map to zoom and then zoom in to the target.

At least I do it like this. Both works pretty fast.

Why the mouse wheel? I'm visual. Its easy for me to task ships if I can see both star and ending locations on the big map. I get lost, confused, etc., when I try and use the 'other' windows / lists because the visual link is gone, and i'm not really sure what is happening. I will try as you have suggested. Thank you for the help...

Tip of the day:

Above the selection panel in the lower left corner of the display are two big buttons, one with a left-arrow and one with a right-arrow. These buttons switch between the latest items you selected without moving the main view.

To get a ship to a far-away location you can for instance do the following:
* Select that ship.
* Navigate to that far-away location by whatever means you prefer. Just don't select too many other objects while doing so.
* Then press that left-arrow button until your ship is selected again. If you press once too often, use the right-arrow button.
* Issue whatever orders you want your ship to perform at its target.

These buttons can be useful for a variety of other tasks. Think about opening the fleets dialog, looking through you fleets to find those near a certain area, selecting each you want for a certain task in turn. Then go backwards through your selection and issuing orders to your fleets like each attacking a specific target in an enemy's area.
