Support units from disbanded HQs lost.

Post by JAMiAM »

According to the manual, the support units in HQs that are disbanded are automatically assigned to the next higher HQ in the chain of command. This appears to be a broken feature at the moment.

On turn five of my PBEM with DicedT, played through the Slitherine servers, I had a couple dozen corps HQs get automatically disbanded, yet my army HQs did not receive the support units from the disbanded HQs. I would provide a saved game, but since the game is server based, I don't know how to get that to you for verification. Please contact them for a copy of my turn 4 end file, and turn 5 start file.

This is a severe issue that needs to be fixed ASAP, as it just cost me several dozen support units over the breadth of my forces. I don't know if this is a known issue, and a fix already in the works, but please let me know if it is scheduled for the next patch, since it was a very costly (in terms of men lost) for my Soviet campaign. In fact, it is very nearly a gamebreaker. Thanks.

Can you double check the CR report to confirm that they are no longer part of the OOB. There is sometimes a lag of a turn or two for units moving between HQs.

Well I'm playing Soviets and I wasn't too bothered about this.  Didn't even look for the missing support units because I don't pay attention to support unit management until recently.  It's now several turns after the mass purge of Corps HQ's and I don't think it dented my defense that much if indeed they went missing.

It's a server game, so I don't have access to the previous turns save files.

In the manual, section 18.5, it states "Any support units that are assigned to a unit that is disbanded are
automatically reassigned to the next higher HQ unit of the disbanded unit." The implication here is that the support units are immediately pushed up the chain of command to the next higher HQ.

Well...given that I'm in a competitive PBEM game, I am very bothered by it. I just lost a few thousand guns, and almost a quarter million men in several dozen support units that have vanished out of the game. Suffice it to say that I don't really feel like completing the next turn, if my army is going to bleed away all its support when it needs it the most.

I seem to remember a thread in this section that Pavel had mentioned that there was a bug with the 41-45 Campaign game where this was occurring, but I can't seem to find it at the moment. If the devs can confirm whether the problem is

1) acknowledged,
2) scheduled for a fix,
3) and the fix will work for games started under earlier versions,

I would greatly appreciate it. I would like to find out whether or not I need to stop, or merely delay the games I have in process. Whether I need to resume the game, if the fix is retroactive, or restart, if it is not, is what I'm trying to figure out.

I'll post this in the dev forum. I think Pavel is technically on Vacation, but he has popped up every now and then.

I have done a very quick test, at the end of turn 4 there were 332 SU support units. At the start of turn 5 47 Corps HQs were disbanded and there were still 332 support units.

This was done using the latest test version so I can say that if there was a problem that needed to be fixed it has been fixed.

I will now switch to V1.01 to test that.

Thanks again for checking on this.

On your test, did you find out where those support units from the disbanded Corps HQs went? Are they getting pushed into other Corps HQs instead of the Army/Front/Stavka HQs? I noticed that some of my Corps HQs seem to have more support units than I remember them having. However, my Army/Front/Stavka HQs are barren.

This was fixed in a patch, just can't remember which one and whether it's been released to the public yet. They do go up the chain of command.

I checked the 1.01 official version and when disbanding units manually, the support units properly went to the higher HQs. Since you reported this from HQ's that were automatically being disbanded, I'm not sure if this has been fixed before or if it is still broken. Bob, did you test the HQ's that were automatically disbanding.

JAMiAM, what version were you using when you had this problem?

I tested latest code and checked the units auto disbanding on T5. The units did seem to be going to the army HQs nearest to the the Corps Hq that disbanded. This was with locked HQs. I don't know if the auto system will spread them around following the support level rules.

Hi Joel,

I've emailed my opponent to confirm his upgrade timeline for patches, but I started, and have played the game entirely under the v1.02beta1 patch.

LoL...that was fast. My opponent just emailed to say that he upgraded to the same version, 1.02beta1, immediately after it was released. Therefore, we've both played the entire game with the same version.

Testing with version 1.01 with unlocked HQs, it seems that the auto system is re allocating the SUs to the remaining corps HQs rather than the Army. So the manual may be wrong in not taking account of the locked/unlocked function, or the code shouldn't send the units to the corps HQ.

The units are not disappearing - 332 at the end of T4; 332 on t5 with 52 HQs disbanded.

The workaround is to set the support level of all Corps HQs to 0 and then lock them when they empty out.

What is the date and timestamp of the .exe? I have so many updates. I can test this version too.

Thanks for finding that. That explains why my other Corps HQs seemed to be "fuller" than I remembered.

I'd suspect the latter.

...what happens when the last Corps assigned to an Army/Front/Stavka auto disbands? Where do the support units that have been progressively stuffed into the Corps HQs go *then*?

Thanks again for checking. If at the end of the auto disband shuffle, I don't lose the support units, and they eventually find their way back into their 'proper' places, then I won't worry about a temporary disruption. Once your tests show that Lil' Bo Peep's lost sheep find their way home, I can get back to my games...[:D][&o]

Once the last corps HQ disbands their only option will be to go to the Army/Front HQs.

Using Locked HQ mode will be the easiest way to ensure that the corps HQs don't get overloaded.

In theory, perhaps. In theory, however, they are supposed to move up the chain of command, and not sideways...[;)]

I'll await a definitive test result, instead of trusting in theory, if you don't mind. The fate of the world is in the balance...[:)]

HQs disband at the beginning of the logistics phase. At that point it becomes available to be sent back down if the HQ is unlocked later in the same logistics phase. That is per the manual. Bob says this is working in his tests with our current version.
