Trying to understand supply issue

Post by heliodorus04 »

So this is from my Road to Leningrad AAR, which is ongoing, and is my first game.

It's the start of Turn 7, and my lead panzer elements have been slowly losing their ability to refuel and resupply. Here's the basic situation geographically:

Image

I know supply is limited by fatigue to some extent, by distance from rail head, and distance to HQ (the HQ is very close, obviously).

Why is THIS unit so much worse off, and generally speaking, how can I improve supply delivery out there to that Northeastern edge of the advance?

I'm editing this and adding some more supply details from the units in question. Bear with me.

Here are the supply details from the unit and it's Parent HQ.

Can someone help me identify:
A) What I should be reading when I read these screens

B) How I can identify my chief operational problems contributing to poor supply at the frontier of my advance

C) How to alleviate the situation now and in the future

D) What I coulda/shoulda/woulda done differently before this point.

Finally, my last question concerns HQ Buildup.

I want to experiment with it for this corps and the other panzer corps north of the location highlighted.

Will it help?

I think being 29 hexes from the railhead may be the problem.

The manual says there is a difference between being "in supply" and "tracing supply"; it's possibly to have one but not the other.

I think being 29 hexes from the railhead may be the problem.

But I have 1 Panzer farther away and in better shape (leading me to believe that the main problem is the Russian ZOC).

So let's assume that the first Panzer Div's problem is ZOC; how can I improve the situation for other units in this extended area?

Or am I being a wishful thinker?
I'm a rank newb, but it seems to me the reason I can't get much beyond 30 MPs for these units is Fatigue. They keep moving SO far each turn.

Calculate average fatigue of the unit based on the number and
fatigue of each type of ground element. Reduce the number of
MP’s by the average fatigue divided by ten, rounded down

Is that a Russian unit between you and your supply source? your unit appears isolated in the pic?

Not isolated as far as I can tell. Friendly-converted hexes to the north allow supply to be traced to the HQ on the far side of the Russian.

Also, can someone tell me what the tick-mark in the upper RIGHT is?

You can see in the screenshot that I have "isolated/far from railhead" units set to display, but I can't see anything that says "these units are far from the railhead" (which they are, aren't they?).

Soft factor in this SS is supply (upper left corner).

Your HQ is within 5 hexes of the division up north, so it's in a better supply situation.

Yeah, there may be one open hex that's ostensibly under your control, but it's still in an enemy ZOC.  That will give you supply problems.  It's not like the supply convoy has an easy run- first they've got a long trip from their HQ (and back), plus their probably getting shelled or encountering enemy patrols in "your" hex.  No wonder they're out of gas.

The black triangle w/ white border means you haven't moved the unit yet this turn.  If you move it at all, the triangle turns solid white.  When all your movement points are spent, the triangle goes away.

edit: the yellow border is what's telling you they're in supply trouble.

That's not how I read the manual.
It appears to me, at least, that if I spend the AP, all units will receive FULL supply (assuming they're within 5 hexes of the HQ).

I'm not saying I'm right; it's just how I interpret the manual (Section 20.6).

I'm going to do it later this turn, perhaps after a few combats, and I'll let you know how it goes (in my AAR).

Nimitz, thanks, that was useful info.

One of the things you can do to help your spearheads with supplies is to do air drops to them. You can pick fuel for the air drop if you want and you can do multiple drops to the same unit.

It is important to remember the rule is 5 hexes and no more than 20MPs. Sometimes if you have to go around ZOCs or across pocketed units, the 20MPs can be exceeded.

I can't tell if this applies in this case.
It's only a Game

A mouse-over should tell you the distance and MPs of the unit to the next supply, take a look there, it might well be more than 20MPs.
