The evil AI sent my carriers home!

Post by Deathifier »

So I've got my big fat army of CV's, CVE's and a CVL sailing around as Allies vs the AI Japan (who, by now, has absolutely nothing left).

3 of the CV's have 20-30 system damage, and the CVE long island has over 35 system damage. I had not sent them home simply because the enemy had nothing that could get through the 150+ CAP (at 60%) all the carriers combined put up ;)

Now I have finally figured out how to carry out a decent assault and have captured everything except Lae, Finaschen (both packed full of troops with no supplies), Kavieng (The AI moved there after I took Rabul) and Truk (I don't have enough transports to unload 40k infantry plus support troops in one go).

I decided to send my carriers up to truck to see if I could sink some of the ships in port, can't resist free points :)
However, after I arrived in Truk (sat in same hex) something seemed wrong - the fleet, which could normally only cruise at 3 hexes/day due to the damaged could now move 5. Looking at the 'ship availability' screen I saw that somehow the 3 damaged CV's and the CVE Long Island had been sent back to Pearl.

The enemy AI had sent my carriers back to pearl from truk!

Despite some attempts to reproduce it by letting the AI beat up the carriers it didn't seem to want to send any away and the only save I have is one just after they were sent home :(

EDIT: I think I found a way to reproduce it, in the savegame below a DD appears at the end of the turn in Truk and attacks the carriers.
If it gets a couple of shell hits on the CVE's and the carriers don't split up (i.e. it does ~15 to 20 sys damage to them and little float) then the AI might send the carriers to pearl.
It's not guaranteed (the DD doesn't always hit them hard enough), but it's the closest I can get.

Now I can't attach a file when editing, so it's over here instead:

LOL. This is too funny.

Sounds like my 6 year old playing a game with one of his friends:

"...sorry, you can't win because these game pieces really aren't here . . .they're over there! See?".

What a way to run a war.

Deathifier,
I too coudn't resist the lure of "free" points and I attacked Truk as well (See my South to Rabaul - Final Tally in the After Action Reports area). After reading about your travails of actually putting your carrier tf's in the same hex as Truk I'm sure glad I hung out 1 hex and bombed from there. I didn't encounter any problems when I sent my surface tf's into Truk to bombard, but then they went in and out quick. I guess there are still some problems associated with sitting in the main enemy supply base and we're both probably lucky we didn't try invading the place.

Oh I tried invading it, I wanted to see if it'd send other ships back and the fastest way to get a damaged ship is to ram transports against mines :)

However my valiant group (2 TFs pure troops, 1 TF pure supply, 1 TF mixed) got slaughtered each turn as they unloaded.
It wasn't pretty seeing 10-30k men die at once :(

Unfortunately damaged transports are flighty things, they either sank or refused to stay put if I split them out of the main TF.

I belive that if the group the vessel it wants to send away is in a group that can be disbanded (hence having to split the empty, damaged transports off) and the TF is in Truk when the AI takes its turn then if the AI decides the ship should go, it does.
