VMWare Fusion or Bootcamp compatibility?

Post by KnoxvilleBuckeye »

Hey folks - maybe my search-fu is lacking, but has anyone tried to install the game on a Mac using VMWare Fusion or their Boot Camp partitions?

I'm interested in purchasing the game, but am unsure as to how it will run on my hardware using VMWare or Boot Camp.

Thanks!

I believe someone installed it on vmware within a week of release and said it worked.

There "should" be no issues with a supported OS install on vmware and/or bootcamp. Both run the OS with no modifications as far as applications running on it are concerned. Note that the at home vmware not the commercial one runs on top of the native machines OS so its hardware calls are slowed. Bootcamp runs the OS on the hardware so there should be no slowdown at all.

I'm going to install on bootcamp right now, be back in a few minutes with the conclusion.

Just installed on bootcamp running Windows 7 64bit and it runs like a charm after setting the compatability option for the exe.

Hi

I have bootcamp and vm fusion running the bootcamp partition.

I find the vision on bootcamp better than VM ware and boot to it.

Anyone else find this?

I tried it on vmware fusion on my mac and found it basically unplayable.
It works like a champ via bootcamp (if I boot windows), but virtualized seems like a no go.

Specific problems I ran into was around the click handling. I had to click everything like 30 times to get the clicks to register. Probably something about the game engine not playing nice with the virutalization engine, but either way I was a sad Panda.

Like I said though, when booted into native windows it works fine.

First off thanks for the quick replies.

In all both virtual machine cases I have the exact same version of Windows 7 patched to the exact same level, containing the latest DirectX, video and audio drivers. In Wine I run in Windows 7 mode. In all three cases I have tried Vista and XP compatibility modes. It crashes immediately on startup with the exact same c0000005 access violation in all cases.

I double checked by installing it to a borrowed, dedicated Windows 7 laptop at the exact same patch level as above and the game runs like a champ, so the installation file is fine.

Not sure what the issue is, or even how well the game would run if it did come up clean. Was just looking for an easy way to take a break from working (I do Java development on Linux via Tomcat, JBoss, WebLogic and Stand Alone java, for a living) and play a turn or two of this great game without having to reboot to another OS or dedicate a machine to it. Funny thing is, War In the Pacific, Admirals Edition, runs just fine in this environment!

Don't really want to pursue this, so I will opt to either put a Windows 7 partition on my workstation or get a cheap $500 box with 2GB ram, and slap Windows 7 on it for a dedicated game machine, instead, and just remote desktop to it to play...

Thanks for the feedback.

Hi all,

During WitE ALPHA/BETA I successfully run WitE on guest windows OSes (albeit the host was Windows Vista 64 bit) - I think I tried both VirtualBox and VMware...

BTW, have you guys tried removing videos from video folder and disabling audio (temporary renaming audio folder)?

So after much mulling and hemming and hawing I bought the game.

Coincidentally an additional 8GB of RAM for my i3 iMac (for a total of 12GB) just happened to show up earlier in the day yesterday - hmmmmmmm I wonder how that happened?

Anyway, I fired up my Windows 7 virtual machine (after installing the extra RAM and increasing the amount of RAM available to the VM from 1GB to 4GB) and installed the game.

My VM is also the same partition as my Bootcamp install - so if I do decide to reboot into Windows, I don't have to worry about reinstalling the game.

After downloading and patching (the entire time which I was watching the episode of Fringe that was about the Observer named August - good episode by the way) I fired up the game at about 12:20AM this morning.  Two hours later I had finished game turn 1 of the Road to Leningrad (thanks btw for that Operational Manual in the other forum [&o] ).

I had no real issues with the game - other than the weirdness that occurs when I tried to side scroll the map while in windowed mode (which I doubt is due to any VM'ing - I just need to full screen the game and not run the VM in Unity Mode).

If anything weird happens though - I'll update further.

Definitely having the extra RAM is what made it possible though.

Yea i got the game to play in bootcamp perfectly. With a lot better performance then a vm system.

I used parallels and that was actually pretty fast. With virtualbox it was a little more laggy. So what i finally started doing for my mac was just using WINE it works better performance wise then using a vm since you don't have the VM lag with 3d applications. Here is a link to the post i made for getting crossover on mac & linux to work.
Wine instructions
-Alpha Tester Carrier Force
-Beta Tester ATG
- Mod Maintainer (past) for ATG's WAW mod
- Mod Maintainer (past) for ATG's GPW mod
-Beta Tester WITE
-Alpha Tester WITW
-Alpha Tester WITE2
-Alpha Tester Wif
-Beta Tester Command

I installed WitE+latest patch (1.04) on different iMac configurations with different degrees of success:

- Success on an iMac 11.1 (Fall 2010) with 8GB of RAM running Snow Leopard 10.6.5 using VMware 3.1.2
- Success with Boot Camp on an older iMac (2008) running Leopard.

In both cases it seems to runs well at full screen with sound on, but I have not tested it extensively.

- Failed on both machines using SUN VirtualBox
- Failed on the old iMac using Parallels.

On a side note TOAW COW+latest patch works with Virtual Box.

Hope this helps!
