Compatibility with virtual OS's

Post by zoomdog »

Has anyone got the game to run under a VMWARE virtual or KVM virtual. Or WINE for that matter. If so, could you post how you did it? Fails under all three methods. No big deal, I can install windows in a secondary partition and load via GRUB boot loader, but it'd be nice if I could just get to run under either VMWARE, KVM Windows 7 slice, or even under Wine, so as not to have to boot out of my main Linux box....

With vmware or any other virtual machine application such as bootcamp if you have installed the base OS such as Windows 7 then this game "should" run with the cavets applying about the specific OS. I.e. compatibility mode for Windows 7.

I haven't tested it on vmware as to me its just about worthless in its speed reduction as my current rig doesn't have the horsepower, so be advised that I've only heard about it running from other posters. Although I can't see any reason for it not running the OS. I've had experience with vmware running $100K+ commercial software at client sites with no issues so it should run a "simple" game.

Note that all vm applications that run on top of a base OS, meaning Windows, OS X or Linux are going to be slower than normal as the have more layers of code to get to the base hardware, think CPU calls and the like. So if you absolutely must have that one boot option then you will have to take the speed hit. Unless of course you have a lot of money to shell out for commercial vm software.

Looks like you don't have a dedicated box but you if you do you could try XenCenter as it is its own stripped down version OS (Linux) and its free for non commercial use. And like other virtual apps it will run just about an OS available.

Sorry posted reply to the linked thread, not this one!

First off thanks for the quick replies.

In all both virtual machine cases I have the exact same version of Windows 7 patched to the exact same level, containing the latest DirectX, video and audio drivers. In Wine I run in Windows 7 mode. In all three cases I have tried Vista and XP compatibility modes. It crashes immediately on startup with the exact same c0000005 access violation in all cases.

I double checked by installing it to a borrowed, dedicated Windows 7 laptop at the exact same patch level as above and the game runs like a champ, so the installation file is fine.

Not sure what the issue is, or even how well the game would run if it did come up clean. Was just looking for an easy way to take a break from working (I do Java development on Linux via Tomcat, JBoss, WebLogic and Stand Alone java, for a living) and play a turn or two of this great game without having to reboot to another OS or dedicate a machine to it. Funny thing is, War In the Pacific, Admirals Edition, runs just fine in this environment!

Don't really want to pursue this, so I will opt to either put a Windows 7 partition on my workstation or get a cheap $500 box with 2GB ram, and slap Windows 7 on it for a dedicated game machine, instead, and just remote desktop to it to play...

Thanks for the feedback.

Hi all,

During WitE ALPHA/BETA I successfully run WitE on guest windows OSes (albeit the host was Windows Vista 64 bit) - I think I tried both VirtualBox and VMware...

BTW, have you guys tried removing videos from video folder and disabling audio (temporary renaming audio folder)?

Here is my guide i made for getting the game to work under wine.
If you don't update that one library file the game will just crash. but once you do that the game works fine.
-Alpha Tester Carrier Force
-Beta Tester ATG
- Mod Maintainer (past) for ATG's WAW mod
- Mod Maintainer (past) for ATG's GPW mod
-Beta Tester WITE
-Alpha Tester WITW
-Alpha Tester WITE2
-Alpha Tester Wif
-Beta Tester Command
