Know the feeling! One day we put a fire control radar lock on a passing AWAC and decided to play the "see if he can break it" game.... Resulted in us replacing a radar package :(.

We did something similar to a Soviet warship unintentionally. We had just received ISAR radar and were using it to image targets while out on s surface search patrol. ISAR is very powerful search radar and can provide a basic image of the target. But to a ESM operator, it can sound like a fire control radar when in the imaging mode. The moment we entered imaging mode, he lit up the world with every air, surface search and fire control radar he had. Lucky for us we were far outside his engagement envelope. No telling what might have happened had we been closer.

Didn't take long though before the Soviets caught on and stopped responding to it.

Chez

Not necessarily a good idea--the job of their trawlers was to collect that stuff. On the other hand, you definitely got what you were looking for, so good work.

Hm doesnt this work both ways? If he lit up like a Christmas tree I am sure there was some good stuff to learn for the good guys also...
I don´t think Chez meant a trawler btw.

It was a Slava class CG. We did learn a lot from the encounter but I think I would rather be the targeter and not the targetee. [;)]

you guys ever drop any porn mags on the "fishing trawlers" in your day? man, they got to love our RIG's after a while...

No we never did that. A good AW never gives up his porn! We did drop a string of CADS on top of a surfaced Foxtrot in the Med back in the 70's though. He was entering an anchorage at night where a Don AS was anchored. He fired a flare directly in front of our nose when we rigged him at 300 feet using FLIR. The flare probably passed within 100 feet of us. My PPC was so pissed he ordered the ordnanceman to open the freefall chute and start chucking CADs out on his command. Don't know how close we came to him but it sure felt good.

Chez - what's a CAD?

Compressed air device (CAD) slightly smaller than a can of beer and weighs about 5 lbs IIRC. They were used to launch sonobuoys from the belly tubes.

No porn, but my XO wanted to float a Sears catalog over to the AGI trawler at the 3-mile limit when we were coming out of Kings Bay. Would have driven them nuts to know there were Lady Kenmore appliances Right Over There. Especially Fat Mary, the hideous-looking cook. We always figured she got detailed as the sexual-harassment-prevention-device.

nice...i remember getting dazzled by a supposed laser device in the pacific one day during a rig...we had been issued goggled to be used for just such an incident, but us macho pilots kept them safely tucked in their cases during most missions...i've never seen such a mad dash for cases and goggles after that!!! almost as exciting as getting intercepted by the ruskies in the sea of okhotsk, then seeing the calvary (airforce F-16 Falcons) come to the rescue...never thought i'd be so glad to see air force pukes!!! (ok, guilty...getting way OT here...)

fun to read what you guys post, probably would be even funnier if I could unterstand just halve of what you write. [:D] Not even google is coming up with explanations for most of the abbreviations, at least with none I would think that´s what you guys meant.

Sorry, the jargon just comes second nature and I tend to forget that not everyone has had the pleasure of being out there.

PPC- Patrol Plane Commander. The senior pilot onboard. We normally carried 3 pilots on a patrol and they would rotate through the cockpit every couple of hours.

Rig- to fly down the side of a ship looking for the name and port of call and any cargo that might be on deck. If it was a warship, we were looking for any new weapons or sensors.

FLIR- Forward looking infrared camera. Forerunner of the IRDS (Infared display system). FLIR had some drawbacks such as being mounted under the starboard wing between the fuselage and #3 engine. You had to look through the spinning propeller plus it could be blanked by the wing if you turned too fast. IRDS was mounted at the bottom of the forward radome and gave a much clearer view.

Don AS- Soviet sub tender used in the Med mostly for diesel submarine repair and replensihment.

Definitely gone off topic.

I wasn't too fond of the air force pukes during the KAL-007 search and rescue flights. The air force kept their F-15s on the ground. I was on the second ready alert launch out of Misawa looking for survivors of the 747 the Soviets shot down near Sakhalin Island. We were sent out one plane at a time and we had practically the entire Soviet Far Eaast air force out harassing us, not to mention the Soviet warships that showed up a day later. Anything from helos to Migs to Tupulov bombers would play cat and mouse and try to keep us from going anywhere near the crash site. We always had a Mig on our tail loaded with weapons and we just knew he had orders to shoot us down if we came too close to land. I totalled nearly 170 hours flight time on 21 flights in 23 days. The only time in my entire naval career where crew rest requirements were waived.

I'm sure it was a high level decision designed to avoid provoking a fight but it sure left us feeling totally helpless and very, very alone. Even the Midway carrier air group wasn't allowed to fly up there

A lot of my flights were great fun. These weren't. They were deadly serious.

P.S. The term means that you are divulging sensitive or classified information over a unsecure network.

One of the few things I remember from OCS comms class. SSBNs don't transmit so much, ever. (I did get to use the Gertrude one time; pretty cool.)

Can I get a CORPEN SIERRA (India Tango Hotel)? (In The House)

Any flashes there?
