I am partial to the USS Pyro, an ammunition ship.[:)]
USS Queerbarge is pretty funny too.
I remember (vaguely) from when I was an internal medicine intern in 1979-80 that we were taught about USN ship naming rules during my mandatory Saturday morning 6:00 -7:00 AM "operational medicine lectures" taught by a bunch of brain-dead administrator-Captain-lifer types.
CVs: named after famous US navy battles, US Presidents, US Admirals, and the occasional Congressman/Senator who delivered huge $ to the Nav.
DDs: named after courageous USN sailors and officers.
Hunter/Killer attack subs: US cities.
Boomers: US states, historical patriots, and/or comtemporary US Senators/Congressmen who appropriated huge $ to the Nav.
"Gator Navy" amphibious assault ships: State counties, US naval battles.
Ammo ships: named after FRICKIN' VOLCANOS!!!!! ('Cause that's what they look like once they get hit, we were told...)
No wonder that we all put in for duty with CVs, Desrons, even the 3rd MARDIV during the Iranian Hostage Crisis, etc,. rather than requesting a relaxing, worry-free year aboard the Haleakala, Shasta, or Mt. Baker...[8D]
