Wondering why on the SW front why you didn't checkerboard him or at least made a few sacrificial units to slow him down?  Do you feel that your hurting for units that you can't afford to loose at this point? Perhaps you were worried about being pocketed?

Yes, I was thinking about a mega pocket.

The point is I don't think I need to take unnecessary risks now [8D]

When my opponent sent the first turn of the game you (Soviet players) are pretty scared. He had encircled most of my Northwest and Western fronts. You see the scary enemy panzers and between them and Moscow there is almost nothing. You think it's impossible to stop the German player, to protect Moscow and Leningrad.

But now -eleven turns later-- I think he will NOT take Moscow and Leningrad. And to be honest, if he can't do that on 1941 (surprise, lousy Soviet units, etc.) I really doubt he will do it on 1942...

And given that he has not crippled the Red Army at all, then my 3 big objectives can be realistically reached: Moscow and Leningrad in Soviet hands, avoid the destruction of Soviet army.

So I don't see why I should use checkerboard (on that salient) AND let my opponent swallow 1 or 2 rifle divisions each turn. I don't need to offer him a single rifle division for free. He is the one in a hurry, not me [:)]

Now, had he destroyed MOST of my Western, Northwest (I managed to evacuate 6 trapped divisions west of Riga by sea) and Southwestern Fronts (he ONLY managed to kill a few security divisions and AT units), then that would be another story. I guess now I would be struggling to survive [8D] And in such scenario I would be on HIS hands. I would be forced to offer him some rifle divisions per turn and for free... and still pray...

Turn 12
4 september 1941

We are resisting in the center... Smolensk hasn't fallen yet. And I think he will need hmm minimum 2 turns to capture the city [8D] Now I will have to consider if I stay or give up (to avoid an encirclement). I think I will not 100% leave, but we will see.

In the Northwest, as you may imagine we have again the cat & mouse game [:D] On the last 4 turns I have been trying to cut off his AGN panzer group. It obviously hasn't worked, but the truth is these maneuvers haven't allowed his powerful North Panzer Group to create a big mess near Leningrad, which is a good thing. After all, what's the most feared thing if you're the Soviet? The bloody German tanks [:)] If they're not moving then take it easy and bring vodka! Double ration for me, please [8D]

In the Center, this is the situation. He just pushed near Smolensk. Status quo on this front then... so far [8D]

Alright, in the Southwestern Front he's moved his AGS Panzers. Given that I retreated part of the front on the last turn, now the Dnper is no longer a barrier. His tanks were south of their current position. You also can see the Panzers in the north, west of Kursk that is. These are his MOST dangerous units of the whole front. What is he planning though? Mystery! [8D] As long as these forces stay away of Moscow, he can do whatever he wants. Does he want to visit Vladivostok? Please, go ahead (not worth a visit though, I was there one year ago and hmm hmm)!

Reinforcements [8D] I show them because finally on this turn the first tank brigades appeared. The idea is that in theory every army should have a tank brigade, on RESERVE mode. But I will possibly end up concentrating them in my most important places: Smolensk area and around Leningrad. As for this Golubev guy, I really don't know what he's done to deserve that promotion, but humm, his 10th army is in the Smolensk area. Good job, mate! [8D]

I predict he has detached Panzers from AGS and shall try to visit Tula or thereabouts to relieve pressure and unhinge your Smolensk defense. Of course maybe there's no rhyme to the reason other than trying to find any soft spot to commence a breakthrough for a big solution pocket. He is probably feeling the pressure for time now very acutely as mud approaches... tick tock.

Yeah, roughly. He has tons of options from there. Panzers in AGS are devilishly maneuverable.

I'm not thinking he will quit, but if he doesn't do something astonishing, he's in horrible postion for '42 map position wise and Soviet army size.

Wait wait wait, guys. I hope it is NOT over [X(] And you have to remember a very important thing. Attacking is more complicated than defending [8D] I always use this analogy: attacking = creative and defending = destructive. Destroying is obviously much easier than creating, in my opnion... SO, I still have to attack during the blizzard. And that will be another different story. Maybe I can ONLY prepare & execute a lousy attack.

In other words, we never know [:)]

True enough. But h e's got to be thinking about winter lines right about now, or he won't have any forts worth a mention for your offensive. He might have time for another gambit, but you smashed hislast one that I've seen (right hook around Lake Ilmen to Leningrad). So suffice it to say you are in a superior position, and unless you completely mess it up during winter, you will be quite powerful in Spring '42. I don't think you have to do anything amazing on your offensive, just play conservatively and not screw it up. You could relieve Odessa concievably in the South. And his South advance is so slow, that I think he has abandoned it and is trying a gambit to Tula, or something else equally dastardly to attempt to unhinge the deep defense of AGC Smolensk to Moscow. He's got to think big, or you might be relieve Brest Livosk in Summer '42. And be sunning in Berlin in '43.

This is just my opinion, and there's lots of room for surprises, hehe.
