Convoy Question

Post by jdcorley »

I am playing my first game in the new AE. (played several in original)
I keep getting convoys at Cape Horn, but what good are they?

I don't have enough TK/AKs to impact the supply (999999) so I cannot see it go up or down. The ships in the convoy (usually 50) can't be 'stolen' and used in the game. And then like most LCUs it dissappears a few days later. The arms listed in the convoy (300 tanks, etc.) don't show up in the base OOB and I have no way to know if I've moved generic supplies or a tank army to Oz or not!

How do I effectively use the convoys and what they bring?

If you look a little closer at the "convoys", you'll see that they're not convoys.

You don't have to do anything with the convoys.

These convoys dissolve and give you supplies and fuel at Capetown that can be transported to Oz or India, beyond the usual pittance that shows up at the base each turn. These are particularly useful for the fuel that they bring.

The arms go into the replacement pool, in addition to the standard replacements you get each turn.

Some of the other off-map locations also get these convoys as the war goes along.
April 2, 1945. The USS Henrico, supporting the invasion of Okinawa, is struck by a Francis operating as a Kamikaze, killing 51. Among the wounded was the father of this poster.

As Terminus says, these are labeled as convoys but are actually LCUs. You can look ahead in the LCU arrival queue and see each of them coming all the way to 1946.

The devs have said they are the creation/idea of Andy Mac, a core team member who posts here a lot. In addition to simulating large supply convoys from CONUS ariving at staging bases, they provide an ingenious database workaround where certain key devices, such as tanks, can be juiced into the device pools at measured periods, without having to write backflippingly difficult DB update routines. When the "convoys" dissolve, usually 3-4 days after they arrive at CT, Aden, Port Stanley, etc., the invisible ships poof away (back to fantasy CONUS ports unseen in the game), leaving their supply, fuel, and device cargos behind.

In 1942, IMO, they are an absolute fuel lifesaver at Cape Town. The ability to see them coming also gives the player lead time to send in-game hulls to accept the bounty and bring it on map for use where needed. Don't let yourself be surprised by their arrival; pre-stage the TFs you need to run the goodies where they can do some good.

[What does upcade mean ?

1. Mooses can'tg type. [:)]

2. My keyboard is now seven years old, and I pound it pretty hard. The left shift key, for one example of many, is only responsive about 50% of the time anymore. I spend as much time editing afterwards as I do typing the first pass.

I fixed the error.
