Ouch.. not a good strength ratio with the Germans under 2.5 million men and the Russians over 6 million.

Looking like one of the reasons 11th army is hurting could be the distance to the rail head.

Be interesting to see how well you can bounce back during the snow and then the summer of 42.

11th army is actually not so far from the railhead and getting involuntarily closer by the week. The rail line right north of the Dnepr is fully operational and there is even a branch going over the river that is working.

I think Turn 37 is the last one, so 5 more to go......this is very ugly. It will be interesting to see how you bounce back, though your tank strength is very low; how did you lose so many tanks? St. Nicolas?

I said at the beginning, that I didn't think you prepared at all for the Winter. Some of your lines, where you are now in trouble, really weren't prepped with digging and defense in depth. You get kudos for being the first Axis AAR in the winter, but this figures to get very ugly....just don't get anyone cut-off.

Many tanks are lost in the forced retreats and I think there is also a winter attrition problem. Unfortunately I need many tanks divisions to plug giant holes just to find out that they are also not able to defend a couple of simple rifle divisions.

In my next game I will certainly be much more careful about the winter. At least the other opponent of Marshall M. should benefit from my disastrous experience.

Ah, you got plenty of tanks compared to historical Germans. (140 tanks available during March on the entire front).

I'm new to the game and still learning. Against the AI I just got through my first blizzard and the panzer units are worthless. They are not a fire brigade. Dug in infantry is what holds best.

No fighting power

Post by MrLongleg »

This and the next post shows you that attacking with Germans in the Blizzard is pointless, even if you are superior 10:1 or 40:1. Now the only other option is to run west as fast as you can... [X(]

Turn 33

Post by MrLongleg »

In turn 33 I found 4 divisions and 2 regiments pocketed. The two last posts show that the relief effort failed miserably. So those brave men are doomed. 2nd army is in big trouble and lost one third of its forces already - not to mention the horrible attrition losses...

Turn 34

Post by MrLongleg »

Turn 34 - TGIF (Thank God its February)

The situation gets from very bad to total disaster. 2nd army is about to loose another 2 divisions in a pocket. Of course the efforts to relief those brave men failed again due to lack of fighting power. 9th army is in miserable shape, most divisions are in state "unready". Where it is possible I am merging two miserable ones into one still miserable division.

On a bright side, the front around Leningrad and Novgorod seems to be stable.

My monster tak divisions, 16th Panzer, that had something like 350 tanks in autumn (due to a bug) is now down to 54 tanks.

For the next three weeks the only thing I can do is try to escape pockets. But now another bad pocket is forming in the 4th army sector at Orel. I need a miracle to get these units out of the frying pan.

Looking at the strength picture we are approaching 3 to 1 in favor of the Russians everywhere, and for number of planes it is even worth. So I guess I can cancel any Spring offensive. I will need months to bring my remaining forces up to strength again. And the I will probable start digging for the winter in May, so that I have a nice level 5 forts frontline by then. I will use swamps and rivers and use the pitiful remains of my Panzer force as reservers behind the lines. That means I will have to shorten the line quite a bit and probably need to retreat the hole southern bulge.

Summarizing the game up to now I think Marshall Miller did the right thing by running east as fast as he could. What could he lose by doing that? He never held ground except for short periods along the Dnepr. Every Russian player should be able to avoid major losses using that strategy. Since I could not kill enough forces I was trying to hunt him down even in the snow turns instead of starting to dig in early October. This proved to be a fatal mistake. Even if Nikolaus had been a success, the 100K+ Russian casualties never would equalize the bitter losses caused by lack of strong defenses.

I wonder if the Blizzard effect is as bad in the second winter?

In my campaign vs the computer ( as Axis ) the strength of the Soviet units dropped when the blizzard ended, and the Axis units got a lot of their strength back.  You should be able to go on limited offensives in the spring-summer.

The blizzard penalties for the Axis are just for the '41-42 blizzard; rest of the blizzards will be normal effects.

2nd Blizzard isn't bad at all; it effects both sides equally.

Only 3 turns left thank god, because I think it's safe to say your front has basically collapsed. If your screenshot is post your move, I see at least a dozen units at Orel and south of Kharkov that should be pocketed when you get the turn back; in both instances, the units defending the opening are very weak. The flanks around Kharkov itself MIGHT hold, but you should be leaving Kharkov next turn. It's lost.

As far as AGN, I don't think he has enough time to close it completely, but it almost looks like he is attempting to flank you on both ends, pusing for Pshkov and the Narva. He'll fall short, but you might consider falling back here.

Turn 38

Post by MrLongleg »

Just finished turn 38 and it is like Easter and Christmas on the same day. My units have a defense value greater than one. I am currently executing operation Phoenix - the rebuild and reorganization of the German army. First goal is to re-establish a solid front line which has been achieved by the end of the turn. I was also able to pocket two Russian rifle divs, that were a little to bold. Map and some statistics about this horrible winter will follow as soon as I find the time.

It is fair to say that toward the end of the Blizzard there was no cohesive line anymore and everything collapsed like a house of cards - everybody was running for life. The bad thing is that as soon as the line collapses there is no holding anymore and the disaster reinforces itself. There was no fighting power of any kind left in my divisions.

I am just curious to see how the other German players will make it through their Blizzard season. I hope they got a serious warning that made them dig early and deep.

The main problem will probably be increased Soviet experience and morale, not necessarily the lack of strength in your own forces, who should refit at least partially before summer.

One thing I'd avoid is merging divisions, as I believe you don't get the division that get merged back.

I think too you will refit soon. Wow how the front is colapsed! With exception of the north... I wonder line Smolensk, Bryansk, Kursk would behave. Charkov must be evacuated. I would evacuate Bryansk as well - too many tanks. Watch out Pskov. Dont hold space, cities, etc your units is what counts. Try to make some solid lines in the back and to make some reserves as well - then you can use them as refits for lines which will be worn out.  The effects of blizard are severe.

About to face it with AGN pretty much dug in, but AGC all over the place and AGS still trying to find a decent defensive position.

I'm not looking forward to it and I am tempted just to retreat as far back as I can

Turn 38

Post by MrLongleg »

Turn 38 - the first non blizzard turn and I started operation Phoenix - the rebuild and reorganization of the army. First goal is to get something like a front line and proper command and control structures back. The mobile corps are mostly set on refit and Germany send a pile of fresh divisions, more are refitting in the Fatherland.

In the north you can see that I was able to bag two overconfident rifle divisions. Since I got some fighting strength back I can now finally stop the Russian offensive. But I am far from able to execute major offensive operations right now. First I need to repair morale and strength and organization.

The big question is - should I go into offensive at all. I am thinking of a major armored push to cut of the northern bulge with 2 Panzer armies from the south and one from the north. Or should I try Leningrad once more? Or should I retreat my southern bulge and build a solid line of level 4 and 5 fortresses and let the Russians pay 10 to 1 for every inch of land?

In the next post I will repost the font line at the end of turn 22 - first snow turn. It is quite humbling to compare the two [X(]

The problem is that as the German you never have enough units to build lines in the back. The only way to build a secondary line is using fortified zones, whcih dig far too slow and use up precious manpower. I would have been so happy to have some reserves.

Man, the one thing I really notice is how offensively depleted all the infantry divs are. Just a shadow of their former selves.....mensch!
