Troop quality

Post by SMK-at-work »

There used to be a lot of questions asked about what the troop quality of the various nationalities is - whether Ottoman "A" class are as good as Russian ones, etc.

I've used the editor to extract these values from the 1914 scenario. Some may look surprising, however you need to also remember that combat effectiveness also depends upon strength - so Russian "A" may have a value of 9, but at only 18 str points they will be at a serious disadvantage vs an "A" German unit that is 24 points.

The poor old Italians get a double whammy - not only is their quality low, but their corps are also only 15 points!

I have sometimes wondered how the game would work if all corps sizes reflected actual manpower, and quality was the only measure of effectiveness. I am fairly sure that a corps for all the major powers was roughly the same number of troops - 2 divisions, or about 40,000 men at full strength, so I would start by equating that to the 24 points of a German corps, and make all the others 24 or scaled as necessary to reflect the actual full strength.

Man power numbers would have to change, but the editor does not allow changing industry or raw materials, so actual recruitment would only be affected if there was a surplus of resources - ie things were going well for that nation.

Some changes are obvious - eg the Russians would have to lose a point (their infantry was very well trained but they lacked artillery compared to Germans). I'm sure people could think of others.

Quality
1(A) 2(B) 3(C) 4(D) 5(E)
Germany 9 8 7 6 5
France 8 7 6 5 4
Austria 8 7 5 4 3
Russia 9 7 5 4 3
Britain 9 8 7 6 5
Ottoman 8 7 6 5 4
Italy 7 6 5 4 3
America 7 6 5 4 3
Serbia 9 8 6 5 4

Belgium 8 7 6 5 4
Romania 7 6 5 4 3
Bulgaria8 7 6 5 4
Greece 6 5 4 3 2

Holland 8 7 6 5 4

Luxemb 6 5 4 3 2
Albania 6 5 4 3 2
AFAIK Albania, like Luxembourg, gets no troops, despite having quality listed.

Edited to try to get the columns to line up but it didn't work - if anyone knows how to do that can you pls let me know!!

Yeah but Serb units have a maximum strength of 16, French 22 - so a full strength French one will beat a Serb one.

If they were to be equal strength you'd probably have to downgrade the Serbs 2 points in quality to keep the same relationship - without knowing he exact formula for combat it'd be trial & error
