Chasing HQs and Airfields

Post by Jacekim »

Hi

I am newbie to this game (but did play its predecessor a lot). And this one is way more complex

And as soon as I broke through the Soviet lines , my Panzers started to chase down HQs and Airfields.
But I cannot see it doing any damage. From what I can detect, the losses of planes does not increase after an overrun.

My question is: does it pay to chase down the HQ and Airfields? (It does in real life)

When you displace an airfield all damaged planes are destroyed.

Check the losses screen Hotkey L for recent battle losses under aircraft

When a HQ is displaced they lose all their supply/fuel dumps and the leader may become KIA

Not really, personally.  I do check to see if any AB has a significant amount of damaged aircraft, and if I can bag a lot, I will go after an AB.  But it usually plays no factor in how I decide to move.  Turn 1, perhaps it's more important (when you damage a LOT of aircraft).

From what I can tell: No, except in limited circumstances

For AIRBASES, Turn 1 it's probably worth diverting a bit to displace one, because you will kill ALOT of damaged planes. Maybe over 1000 Turn 1 this way. Probably worth it.

For HQs, not really

How does one check how many damaged aircraft there are on an enemy airbase?

When you mouse over the base, you can see the # of active/total aircraft. Damaged is the difference between the two numbers. EG Base shows 34/108 and you move adjacent to it, 74 damaged aircraft will be lost.

I will go after HQ's as long as I don't over extend myself. Its not so much what you bag right there, its the effect it has on his units next turn which are now out of command.

Against the AI at least if you keep routing the HQs the troops never get a break. Routs come real easy and the rally points keep changing. In the south this phenomenon means that when combined with a retreating AI, you cut through to the Don.

You may be able to retrieve some of the fuel/supplies abandoned by displacing HQs.

I pays a bit not too much as it will divert your overall axis of advance.
I make enemy HQs displace when I have a chance but I do not chase them wherever they go.

When you displace headquarter and airbase units, in addition to losing damaged equipment the displaced units also suffer attrition damage. So it is worth chasing them a bit, as long as they don't distract you from the operational goals.
