What's a ***fuel explosion*** worth?

Post by Chickenboy »

For those of you that have had the pleasure of inflicting a penetrating hit to your opponent's ship and seen this message (or the pain and ignominy of receiving same), what would you say an 'average' impact of a ***fuel explosion*** really is in the game?

I think we're mostly in agreement that a magazine explosion is catastrophic and the ship will sink. Right?

An ***ammuntion explosion*** is awful bad too. Is this the same damage modelling as a fuel explosion?

But what do these translate to in game terms. Average impact?

I would guess:

Fuel explosion: SYS/FLOAT/ENGINE/FIRE would go up by something like 20/30/10/50? Whadaya think?

Just curious.

it varies of course, but on average a Fuel/Ammo explosion will probably fall within the 30% range.

Well, in my game, Soryu took 2 bombs and had a fuel explosion. Her damage was sys 51, flot 46, eng 28 fire 56. Her fire level jumped to 75 then 99. She made it to port 4 hexes away but sank at the pier due to uncontrollable fires.

i once had a fuel explosion that produced a whopping 2%FLT, 8% damage and only 12 fires. You never know, though this result is a raity.

Yeah, I had one on Enterprise and she was sitll flying planes on the next 1-day turn. Under 10 system damage, maybe 2 float as I recall.

I put two torpedoes into Akagi and she added the fuel explosion. Don't recall exactly where, but I think it was near the Solomons. Reported sunk, reincarnated three months later.

I would agree that circa 30 somethings in total is probably average.

I have experienced more than my share of critical hits of the aforementioned types.  IME, it is rare to see a combat ship sink solely because of a critical hit, though it has happened to me once.  IIRC, the BB Ramilles took a single sub torpedo that ignited an ammo bunker than ignited a fuel bunker that exploded / sunk the ship.  Usually I see 10 to 20 in sys, eng, or flood.  Obviously fires go way up, but I can't say how much because by the time I review at the end of the turn, one cycle of damage control has already occurred.  As a SWAG, I think about 20-40 fires in most cases.  Any higher and I think far fewer ships as a percentage would survive the event.

That is one of the things that is so odd about the ship damage system. You so often get relevant/historical results but the time line is way off. The ships that suffered conflagarations in WWII pretty much were all gone within 12 hours (Lexington, Wasp, Hornet, Akagi, Kago, Soyru, Hiryu, etc.) It is not atypical in WITP and AE to have ships linger for days. Nonetheless the fires never go out and the ships always founder. Maybe part of this is that we as a group are eternal optimists: holding out that slim hope that the fires may actually go down. IN RL they would have just scuttle the hulks and called it a day.

I have yet to see an magazine explosion that did not sink the ship. The other types can vary quite a bit.

I think that 2by3 did it this way to give us a little bit of a taste of what the TF commanders went through. IRL this would happen within hours, as you say, but in the game that would mean it would sink within one day or noght phase. Instead, they programmed it so that it would run over a few days so that we can experience the relief/despair cycles of thinking that you're going to save the ship and then finally losing the battle....

As the Allies I ignore them and for the Japanese I dance for joy or cry.
The Allies can shrug them off while the Japanese ships usually burn to the waterline.
I had an Essex class carrier take two sub torpedoes and TWO fuel explosions in a row (never seen this before). 22 system damage and 2 fire damage which was put out a turn later. She continued flight operations for another week as invasion support and then I put her into PH and then the west coast for repairs.

This is correct. The designers could have just let the fire play out in a normal amount of time (ie, one phase), or they could have it play out over 2-3 days and you would get the excitement of watching it progress or get under control. I realize ships don't burn for days on end, but I definitely like the feature. It helps make the game personal and emotional. Instead of just seeing "bomb hit, ship sunk.....

It depends what ship you hit, but usually Fuel Explosion is extremely bad news for any CV, as bad in game as historically. Beware of FOW, tho. [8D]
