Open Armaggedon AAR. PH Welcome.
Welcome to the new, improved and open to all comers, especially PH, AAR for the Armaggedon game involved myself and PH.
This AAR is part of an attempt to reintroduce the enjoyment into an Armaggedon game being played between Nemo121 and PH. I would invite everyone who is interested in the game or situation to be involved. The assumption is that everything mentioned here will be read by both players. Since there has already been a significant breach of FOW the usual strict rules re: FOW can be relaxed.
I will state my current plan and situation. I won't mention everything obviously but if I mention it then feel free to discuss it here. I assume the same rules would apply with any contribution PH makes.
Current Situation:
Since 1st September 1945 Allied forces have moved along the Okinawa/Kyushu axis slowly and methodically. The most recent landing 92 miles off the coast of Kyushu has been held and is in the process of being reduced. This is important because it shows the basic soundness of a strategy of accepting a landing but trying to frustrate it. This is important because attempts by Japan to stop a landing are doomed to failure by sheer weight of numbers.
Allied reinforcements into the Aleutians have been confirmed by a 1 Bde spoiling raid into the Aleutians and efforts to fortify the Kuriles have been completed. The Kuriles are as fortified as I can ever make them.
Allied naval forces OWN the Yellow Sea. Even my subs get torpedoed by their subs in this area. The IJN SC component is outnumbered about 20 to 1 so it won't do anything when the invasion comes. It is simply too outnumbered to survive even light combat with the Allies.
Japanese naval attack formations have failed spectacularly in recent weeks such that large numbers of the Japanese forces in the region have been converted to kamikazes. Not as many as PH probably thinks as I've focussed on quality improvement rather than massing numbers. With that said I think the strategy of allowing the landings ( as if I have a choice ) and then seeking to frustrate them is a strategy which will allow for success.
It'll all come down to the first two days of the invasion. If I hold without losing too many forts or troops then I should be able to hold long-term. If the forts drop and my troops get obliterated in combat then I won't be able to reinforce as quickly as the APAs and AKA-carrying troops will allow the Allies to do.
Where do I think the Allies will land? Either Kyushu or Korea. I don't think they'll land in a single base though. I think they'll land in two mutually supporting bases, one to cut the LOCs to the most distant base and the other to land at the most distant base and take it. This represents a huge problem for me as landing at more than 1 base means I can't just flood one base with everything I have and failing at any base means failing everywhere. Right now a single huge gamble works in Japan's favour while a number of smaller gambles where only one has to be succesful works in the Allies favour.
On the plus side the IJAAF and IJNAF won't be helpless babes in arms for much longer.
So, that's the basic plan. Let the Allies land and try to attrit the fleet as much as possible during the landing with kamis and CD guns. I don't think the IJN has a chance of doing much in a stand-up SC TF fight so I don't think there's much point committing it there. I'll commit a few to keep PH honest though, after all you never know when you'll get lucky. Really though it'll come down to how well I can get my reserves into whatever region he lands in and just how well my forts and troops hold up. IJA troop experience is damned low ( 25% for many units ) which will really hurt me early on but I do have numbers and landing all those troops over open seas is going to be tough. I wonder how much prep his forces will have? They can't have more than about 50 prep even if this was his plan from day 1 so I'm hopeful of a mass casualty event when they unload. The carnage among his troops landing at the Tokarra Retto has given me some hope. It looks like half his force was rendered combat-ineffective just by landing there even though I had no CD guns. So, if half his invasion force gets disabled in landing then that'll help me hugely obviously.
Seriously, someone start sacrificing small animals in order to get bad seas all around Kyushu and Korea ( and the Aleutians ). [:D]
P.s. If I'm wrong about those three as the landing sites then please feel free to change the target of the animal sacrifices accordingly [:D]

RE: Open Armaggedon AAR. PH Welcome.
Good to see! Can you give us a comment about the strategic bombing situation?
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

RE: Open Armaggedon AAR. PH Welcome.
Well, roughly 1/3rd of the Japanese HI was wiped out by strategic bombing raids at 6,000 feet or so in the first few days of the strategic bombing campaign. The move to 20,000 feet is producing more reasonable results but HI factories need to be changed to a 1:1 ratio with HI production from the current 1:2. So effectively I think we're half-way to solving the problem. I still think it is overpowered even at 20,000 feet though.
With that said once, as Japan, you accept that you are not going to build a navy you achieve a huge functional reserve. Right now I am building up an HI reserve. It has increased by a factor of 3 from its low point near the start of the game and every day I am salting away several thousand HI despite the losses so far. I am doing that by concentrating on building the air force and army.
As an example: The Japanese Air Force monthly build requirement.
Roughly 1800 single-engined planes and 600 twin-engined planes per month ( this includes a small number of four-engined and six-engined bombers being counted in as 2 or 3 twin-engined bombers just to keep the math simple and because I don't want PH to know my EXACT G9M and Ki-264 production)...
So 1800 single-engined planes cost 1800 x 36 HI = 64,800 HI. The bombers (twin and more-engined ) cost 43,200 HI per month. Combined that comes to 108,000 HI. This equates to 3600 HI per day.
At the start of the game Japan was getting about 9,000 HI. I'm now down to about 6,500 or so per day which gives me enough to build pretty much every plane I want twice over.
Abandoning naval production pays HUGE dividends. A good navy costs as much as the army AND air force combined.... I, personally, think I can, throughout most of the game, do much more with a weak navy and strong army and air force.
Overall though, if PH is invading now then his strategic bombing attacks have, strategically, been a failure. Their goal would, IMO, have to have been to reduce my production such that at the time of the invasion I couldn't replace my losses in the air or on the ground. While he has gone about 40% of the way to that goal if he invades now HI production will NOT limit my ability to defend and therefore the strategic bombing offensive hasn't worked. He'd need another 3 months of bombing, IMO, to achieve the reduction of HI necessary to curb my ability to replace fighter losses ( a key goal for the HI bombing campaign, IMO ).
So, PH may be coming for me but he hasn't yet removed my ability to make an HI reserve so, IMO, he is invading too early from the strategic bombing point of view. With that said he obviously must think he is ready to go. I really hadn't expected him till the end of the current month ( when his prep could have reached 60 or so ) since I really thought he'd be scared off by the Tokarra Retto amphibious landing losses. DUring the uncontested unload his Combat Engineer Regiment went from being 250+ AV strong to being something like 100 AV strong. Those are horrific losses for an uncontested landing and will be much worse if he lands in a contested zone with poor prep.
So, to summarise:
1. Strategic bombing is overpowered.
2. It only achieves its objectives when it cuts into actual Japanese production and not jsut their ability to build a reserve.
3. If you don't care about that then you can invade even before the strategic bombing campaign has reached its primary objective ( which is the situation here).
Perhaps PH has gotten bad intel re: my losses though so thinks he has reached that fulcrum when he hasn't. I doubt that though as there is far too much free industrial intel available to the Allies in-game so he can see my production almost as clearly as I can.
My assessment is that he is invading now because of that individual contacting him and breaching FOW. I think that upset him and I think that his reaction is to "just launch the damned invasion". I can understand that reaction on an emotional level but I don't think it is what he was planning to do before the intel breach - and I think he was right to be waiting for losses to have more of an impact on the IJAAF and IJNAF ( whether that would have happened or not is a different question. It would have been his expectation though, IMO ).

Just waiting on PH to send the turn. I was busy too till today anyway so wouldn't have been able to process a turn till tomorrow.
Given the recent issues and their impact on my and PH's motivation to continue the game I'm more than happy to give him all the time he wants.

RE: Open Armaggedon AAR. PH Welcome.
Something I will be looking for in this AAR is to see what the weakness is in the Japanese economy. Since I'm playing both sides right now, I need to find out what I need to protect, if possible and what needs to be bombed into the Stone Age. Is it HI, Refineries, specific airframes, engines, or what??

The reason is twofold, first and foremost, I want to win by physically conquering Tokyo, or at least large parts of Japan. Like we discussed earlier, I dont want to win by strategic bombing, it is too simple. Something along the lines of 1/2 or 1/3rd of your HI is located in Osaka/Kyoto. I get 6 A-bombs. It is too simple to just wait for the A-bombs and then raze Osaka and perhaps Tokyo. Game over, and there is not really anything you can do about it. Where is the fun in that?
Second, I believe the HR we imposed on my B29s make strategic attacks too impotent for the strategic bomber offensive to be viable. With min alt 20k for city attacks, I roughly lose more bombers to ops and fighters than I kill HI with each mission. I checked the numbers after the attacks on Osaka, and if 300 B29s only manage to take out 70-80 HI, then it is simply not possible to kill off your HI via strategic bombing. At least not with B29s only.
I think I have to invade now, because absurdly as it might seem, I think your airfoce is getting stronger the longer we play. You have fighter and bomber types that are better than my units. Latest port strike you did on Okinawa, 3 Ki 264 Angels were intercepted by my night fighters, flew right through my fighters, and put 4 bombs in 4 different CVEs in port and then returned home without losses. You have bombers that can fly above my CAP and when used as kamikazes still hit ships. There is no defence against that for me since I wont get any carrier aircraft that can intercept above 42k, and since your kamis obviously manage to hit the ships despite diving from 40k+, my CVs will not be able to protect an invasion fleet. Im assuming that you are building lots of those bombers, aswell as the Ki94II, who has a max alt well above my best fighters. So, PH may be coming for me but he hasn't yet removed my ability to make an HI reserve so, IMO, he is invading too early from the strategic bombing point of view.
So in this scenario, Japan has the better hardware, and the longer I wait with my invasion, the more advanced fighters and bombers I will face.
Ready to go is a relative state of preparedness. The thing that pushed me over the edge was the fact that you obviously had spotted my invasion fleet at Okinawa, and if 3 Ki264s can put 4 bombs in 4 different CVEs, what sort of damage can 30 Ki 264s do? Or 130? I dont know how many you have, but I do know that my night-CAP has been utterly impotent when it comes to preventing your raids. And Tokarra Retto was not uncontested.
The era of procrastination, of half-measures, of soothing and baffling expedients, of delays, is coming to a close.
In its place we are entering a period of consequences..

RE: Open Armaggedon AAR. PH Welcome.
Interesting post PH. Interesting to see things from your point of view...
1. I agree with you re: the A bombs. Your goal should be to win skillfully and not to fall back on the easiest, no-brainer way of winning. Kudos to you for feeling that way.
2. HI bombing... Ah, "at least not with B29s only".... That's the kicker isn't it. What I would say is that at 70 HI per day you would destroy my entire HI in 50 days. Assume 1 raid every 2 days and still in 3 months you'd remove my ability to produce anything... Add in B17s hitting southern Japanese HI and concentrate the B29s up north and you could hurry that along quite a bit. The issue there is, of course, bases.... one thing Korea or Kyushu will give you in spades.
3. LOL! I don't think the Ki-94II is going to turn out to be a P-51H-beater. I think it might achieve parity with the P-51H and will be better than most of the other USAAF fighters. As for the Ki-264s... Aye, they're pretty damned good and I AM happy to have the 16 I make per month (this is from memory, it might be 24 or something like that ) but they are only a nuisance right now as there are too few of them. Sadly 3 was my "Alpha Strike" of Ki-264As that night. That was all I could put up in the air. It seems my policy of seeming somewhat stronger than I am in some areas worked rather well - that's all over now due to the leaker though.
4. I have lost quite a few Ki-264s... mostly, to be fair, on the return flight but a couple of my raids have lost all of the bombers committed. Your fighters and FlAK tend to damage them enough that they crash on the way back. The crew survives ( which is very important to me ) but they still go down. Not nearly as many as if I committed fragily Netties to the missions but they do go down. Again, the FOW must be hiding that from you ( which is quite nice design ).
5. Tokarra Retto: Well, I had a Brigade there but I didn't have any specialised CD units. So the amphibious landing wasn't really contested by any specialist units... The Brigade simply didn't have enough arty to cause the huge losses I saw... Hence I think the lack of prep must have accounted for most of those losses. Initially I just assumed you'd only landed a tiny part of your force on the first day by mistake. I couldn't actually believe the number of disabled you had and the low AV you had by the end of the first day. I thought it was a result of partial unloading. It took me about two days to actually accept that landing disablements really were that high - it also helped my morale because I began to think to myself.... "If NO CDs and minimal fortifications and 1 Bde cause THIS then just what's going to happen when he hits something I'm actually properly defending?"
I guess we'll find out soon enough [8D]

RE: Open Armaggedon AAR. PH Welcome.
13th October 1945.
A very quiet day. B-29s hit another 20 HI near Osaka/Kyoto but suffered roughly 30 of their own downed in return.
A huge slew of ships appears to have left Naha in Okinawa - by my count at least 370 ships have left port... I'm assuming it is at least double that...
The IJA reserves in Kyushu and Korea are moving into their final positions and the strategic reserve ( all 3,000 AV of it ) is being positioned so it can rush to either location within 2 days of the landings being confirmed.
IJAAF and IJNAF preparations are being completed with the last round of IJAAF bomber upgrades being undertaken and another 400 planes added to the kamikaze fleet ( which now numbers approximately 1000 planes ). Fighter groups are upgrading and organising into their Air Divisions and Air Fleets. I've got to be careful to keep enough to cover Tokyo etc though, PH is sneaky enough to hit Tokyo while invading elsewhere, using the invasion as a decoy.
All in all though I'm pretty happy my strikegroups are at over 90% ready aircraft which means being able to sortie over 3,600 strike planes in a single day. NO matter what the CAP 3,600 strike planes + 1,000 kamis is going to do some damage.
I'm quite cheery actually as I figure I'll be able to throw enough planes his way that by the end of the day's strikes his ships will simply be out of ammo and my hit rate should increase rather nicely... and then I'll get to sortie another 250 Oscars onto his SLOCs as he retreats. If I can keep this invasion from being decisive such attritional losses will work very much in my favour.... The trick is keeping this invasion bogged down and indecisive on land.
I think the naval attrition side of things will work nicely. It is just whether or not my poorly experienced troops can hold that's the problem. Ah well, between the forts and numbers we'll see. I'll return the turn tonight or tomorrow night....

Restricting strategic bombing but having uninterceptable kamikazes? Sounds reasonable.
RE: Open Armaggedon AAR. PH Welcome.
Again your bigotry is let down by the fact that the facts don't support it.
The Allies have at least dozen types of fighters or fighter-bombers ( including common bearcats, tigercats, corsairs, sea spitfires, p-51s, p-47s , mosquito fighter-bombers etc.... Basically the majority of fighters and fighter-bombers can intercept those kamis. Id tell you how to do so but long experience shows me you are more interested in whining and personal point-scoring than facts or actually learning how to improve beyond mediocrity.) which can easily intercept my kamis even when they come in at high altitude. There are, however, ways to minimize the chances of interception through operational and tactical finesse and I am using them successfully.
To be clear, not a single kami I've launched was uninterceptable. If I start using ki94s as kamis that will change but I haven't used any like that yet.
Now, please, consider yourself uninvited from this AAR Castor. I truly don't care to have to put up with your uninformed, false gibberish.
Ps. Sent the turn back last night. Didn't have a huge amount to do really. Just put long-made plans into motion.

Great to see you are back up and running!
Good solution to run a joint AAR, makes reading FOWish.

lol, very well said Mr. whiny my HI is being unrealistically whiped out... creating a fantasy mod, employing fantasy tactics and then complaining about his Allied opponent destroying the Japanese HI with strategic attacks? What you have missed is that PJH mentioned that none of his carrier fighters could intercept your kamis above 42000ft, it wasn´t me. And you were the one that cried about B-29 attacks that destroy your HI, it wasn´t me. I have only put it into one sentence above. And it sounds reasonable (to me) because that´s what I would expect from you. No personal attacks involved in my post above. I don´t wonder you would employ everything that was already seen in WITP as gamey. It´s a game afterall, I don´t care about you either as most of your comments are pretty much coming from a whimpy clown, or I´m reading them wrong?
If you haven´t read your opponent´s post, let me show it to you again:
You have bombers that can fly above my CAP and when used as kamikazes still hit ships. There is no defence against that for me since I wont get any carrier aircraft that can intercept above 42k, and since your kamis obviously manage to hit the ships despite diving from 40k+, my CVs will not be able to protect an invasion fleet
If this isn´t pure fantasy then I pity you.

Castor,
I won't deal with your post in huge detail since I don't think you actually bother about anything other than your preconceptions and bias. I'll say 3 things though:
1. I've asked you to leave this thread. I'd appreciate if you'd show yourself to be well enough raised to take that opportunity to leave.
2. I have undertaken to play a mirror game using the same strategic bombing etc rules. Since PH had destroyed 1/3rd of my HI before the rule change the rule change ACTUALLY hampers me more than him since I'll have far more HI to destroy at the new bombing altitude. Of course that doesn't fit in with your bias so you ignore the facts.
3. The ceiling of the Ki-43III is 37,400 feet and the Ki-74 is 39,370. NONE of my kamis can fly above 40,000 feet. Radar often gives erroneous heights.
If we look at Allied planes which can fly above 37,400 but below 39,370 feet we find the following makes: P-40N1, F8F1 Bearcat, FR-1 Fireball, P-38s, Corsair IV. In total the Allies get 465 of these plane types per month.
If we look at the Allied planes which can fly above 39,370 feet we find the F7F, Spitfire VIII, P-51B, P-51D, P-51H, P-47D25 and P-47N as well as Thunderbolt II, F6D, Spitfire F XIV. In total the Allies get 1,127 of them.
So, in total the Allies get 1,592 planes PER MONTH which can intercept the Ki-43 IIIs and 1,127 which can intercept the Ki-74. If I am able to still sneak them through then that's good play and good luck on my part.
So, "uninterceptable".... No, 1,592 planes per month are produced which can intercept them quite easily. Of course, you didn't bother to check your facts or just chose to ignore them in favour of a rant and baseless accusations.
Please do me a favour and quit posting here. I have no desire to have to wade through more incorrect, biased, unscientific accusations and postings which do nothing to add to the understanding of the strategies employed by myself or PH or help others understand the interplay of technical and tactical deployments. I will view further posting as trolling and stalking and alert the moderators accordingly.
Alternately you may feel free to apologise for your behaviour and baseless accusations.

That is not the whole story though. The F4U4 is the best alt carrier capable fighter I have. It has a ceiling just short of 42k. You have three aircraft types with ceilings higher than that. Ki94II, and Ki 102, both can be used as kamikazes.
To complicate things even further, not all my carriers have F4U4s, most rely on Hellcats for fighter cover with a max alt just short of 39k. Loads of your aircraft, including two level bombers have max ceilings above 39k.
In fact, your Ki94IIs have higher ceiling than even my P-80 Shooting Stars, when they arrive.

RE: Open Armaggedon AAR. PH Welcome.
Well, PH you need to check the stats a little more.
1. Ki-102 carries NO BOMBS. So, sure I can use it as a kami but all it will do is crash and scratch the paint. It won't do any damage since the game code uses the bomb carried to determine penetration and damage caused.
2. Ki-94 II. Yes, I COULD use the Ki-94II but I haven't. If you wish I'll happily guarantee not to use them as kamis so long as you agree not to use them as kamis in our mirror game. I don't really care what rule you wish to play under. As I view it I'll simply adapt and overcome irrespective of the rules with just one caveat... The rule has to apply in the mirror game also.
As to your CVs relying on Hellcats. Well, you get 180 or so Corsairs a month ( ceiling 41,600 ), about 70 F7F Tigercats (40,000 feet plus ) and 60 FR-1s per month and 220 or so F8F1 Bearcats (38,700 feet ) per month. Add in to that all the USAAF planes you could add as LRCAP and I really don't see the problem in defeating kamis flying in at 37,300 feet or the 6 Ki-74s per day flying in at 39,370 feet. Just put the Corsairs and Tigercats up at 40,000 feet plus, the Bearcats at 38,000 feet and all those Hellcats down low and you'd kill the high-flyers. Of course doing that would mean I'd be able to sneak low-level kamis in without interception ( which I try to do from time to time ).
So I see this situation as being a result of three things:
1. You are forced to cover a lot of TFs with fighters and so you don't have enough fighters over any single TF to really annihilate my kamis. That's one reason they get through.
2. You are pressing ahead with an invasion now instead of waiting a two or three months. For every month you wait you could have another 500 fighters on those CVs which are able to reach my high-flying kamis. That's a choice you are making and because you are attacking now you are going in with less high-level cover than you would like. That's a trade-off. Life and strategy is about trade-offs. You are attacking now with a weakness in your defence vs high-level kamis in order to capitalise on my weaknesses elsewhere before I can fix them. That's war.
3. I don't believe you are concentrating your CVs enough. As such my kamis run into relatively light CAP and thus burst through. If faced with heavy CAP they would die. I've tested it and that's the way it works.
Hell last turn I lost a kami attack flying at 38,500 feet when it ran into Spitfires. What happened? The Spits had the ceiling advantage and were in the right place and shot down every A6M7 I committed. I think though you are spreading your CAP too thin and so are paying the price. I don't see a problem with that. If you waited another month or two you'd have another 500 or 1,000 high-altitude fighters and would have far better high-level CAP. As I said though it is your choice to attack now and with the benefits of an immediate attack come some downsides. I don't see anything unrealistic about that.
Sure it'd be nice to have thousands of high-level fighters from the start but you have many hundreds and one of the trade-offs in the game is if you attack quickly you don't get enough time to thicken up that high-level CAP. Sit back till December and your high-level CAP will be three times stronger and impenetrable for my Oscars. Right now though they can get through because you haven't waited to gather those numbers.
I've included the table below which, I think, visibly shows that the Allies have more than enough fighter types to reach out to 40,000 feet and beyond. Sometimes we look at situations and see explanations for things when those explanations might not actually be the real end-point of the analysis. I think you need to look beyond altitude. You have the altitude to reach my kamis. The reason you aren't reaching them has, IMO, to do with other issues. Since this is a competitive game there's a limit to the detail I am willing to go into to help you figure out your errors. What I've said above should be more than enough to close the gaps in your CAP I'm exploiting.

Castor,

Please do me a favour and quit posting here. I have no desire to have to wade through more incorrect, biased, unscientific accusations and postings which do nothing to add to the understanding of the strategies employed by myself or PH or help others understand the interplay of technical and tactical deployments. I will view further posting as trolling and stalking and alert the moderators accordingly.
Alternately you may feel free to apologise for your behaviour and baseless accusations.
don´t worry, neither was it intended to stay in this AAR nor (and you won´t believe it) was my first post here an insult nor trolling, just stating in one sentence what is obviously happening and it´s not me that drops off the line with my comments right from the start, but you while I´m not as softskinned as you to really be touched by it. But please go ahead and turn to a moderator if you wish.
I´m glad that I do incorrect, biased, unscientific accusations and postings which do nothing to add to the understanding of the strategies employed by myself or PH or help others understand the interplay of technical and tactical deployments (a typical Nemo sentence) and you post a lot of aircraft types that can go above 42k. While I´m not interested in your fantasy mod and have never looked at it (I may be wrong therefore), which of those great aircraft actually are carrier capable? I may also be wrong and you, the undoubtful biggest strategic genius on the forum, probably won´t use Kamikazes to attack airfields, but (if you got any sanity left) are going to attack ships with your kamikazes. And these are covered by CARRIERS. And carriers field carrier based fighters. Now, again, if you haven´t modded some fighter aircraft into carrier based ac that never flew from carriers in real life, I wonder how smart it is to count up mostly land based fighters with 42k+ ft ceiling (F6D? Douglas F6D? 15 years early and never employed?) to be employed against kamikazes? Yeah, using LRCAP perhaps. Mhm, the smartest idea ever in WITP or AE as you sure know about LRCAP over carriers.
Your opponent obviously thinks exactly the same as you, that´s why my initial post was: Restricting strategic bombing but having uninterceptable kamikazes? Sounds reasonable. That´s probably what you mean with your last sentence in your post, which I like best btw.
All this of course doesn´t matter anyway, even if Allied fighters would have a ceiling at 20000ft and Japanese at 100000ft, you wouldn´t use Kamikazes anyway higher than the enemy fighters´ ceilings I guess? Or would that be one of the genius methods of technical and tactical employements? No, the biggest strategical and tactical genius sure wouldn´t use such a tactic? So the discussion about ceilings is obsolete anyway, just wonder why your opponent fears to be disadvantaged by the ceilings.
Like I´ve said, neither do I want to stay in this AAR, nor was my initial post anything but insutling (yeah [8|]), it´s funny that you go boom everytime someone dares to critizise your dreams of what has been reality. Again, go ahead and tell Joe to go through the posts in chronological order.
cheers
