Ok so i'm having a crack at another human style shipset, and this time hoping to get the scaling right. So it's my current understanding that DW scales not simply on the size of the graphic or the size of the ship design, but also on how much empty space is in the model, this then means the less empty space I leave the bigger the model will be in game yes?
Also how do I go about making large engine flairs? for instance the wip below the two red arrows indicate the edges of where the main engines will be but i would like them to be quite long so they stretch to where the red lines are as i will also ut a couple of smaller flairs to try and get it to look like its coming out from under the semi circle ship rear.
wow, i'm no modder so i can't help but just wanted to let you know how far my jaw droped when I saw this
hope you get all the info and make this ship a reality
hey, anybody familiar with the firefly ship? this one reminds me of it, would be great to have it in DW
again, sry for the offtopic ranting....good job so far feygan
Ok got it in game but things don't seem right. i've tried to keep the blank box small and tight to the model so as to reduce wasted space (attached image with black boarder to show).
However ingame it still doesn't seem to scale well at all. In the image top is a size 300 destroyer (png 500x500), middle is the capital ship size 300 (png 272x684) and bottom is the capital ship size 930 (png 272x684).
Now I know pointy ships do suffer abit with scale but i'm struggling to see what trick i've missed to ajust the model size to force it to scale without sacrificing the ingame shape and design. Any ideas anyone?
The length is fine but its just so darn skinny when at size 900+, I know pointy ships do stay somewhat skinny but its no woder there really than the 300 destroyer top. Do I just need to stretch the model widthways?
Game doesn't affect the proportions as far as I know, just the overall size. It looks to me the large cap at the bottom is the same proportions as the small cap in the middle. You could try and widen it sure. You might lose some image quality from widening it, so I would edit the large image you posted above, then perhaps reduce it in size slightly to hide the detail loss. As long as it fits within a 250x250 square it should appear fine even at tech level 7 in game. But I always try and aim for 300x300 to be safe (though it usually end up smaller [:D]). I wouldn't go smaller than 250 on the longest axis though if you can help it.

I see, although if I fit the ship into say a 300x300 square won't that cause issues with the way it is proportioned. Because it is roughly twice the length of it's with means I would have to make the ship around 300x150, this leaves alot of empty box space doesn't it? Not sure but I keep recalling I read the more empty space you have the less the game scales up the graphic size? Would it not be better to make it say 300x180 for example?
No because I think the game ignores the shape of your image and considers it a square anyway. I always use a square because the modding guide said, but on the couple of occasions I forgot to use a square, and then changed it to a square afterwards it made no difference to the ship.

I fattened your ship a bit, but also made it symmetrical because I was rushing and only had to clean up one side (from the black background of the jpeg), fattened the end of the neck so it connected to the wider main body, but left the cockpit the original shape. It looks fine scale wise to me against other Cap ships from my game:
Edit: Shipsizes were in the 400s

The shorter lines will just make thinner engine trails. You can put engine trails on the ship image itself too, they always appear under the image instead of over it (I think), so you won't have an exhaust over your image.

The left side has the blue line extending over the ship itself, the right side is the original size with the blue line not extending over the ship. You can see the trail goes under the ship and strangely the blue line over the ship is not visible

Just tested that myself, wasn't aware you could stick engines under things like that. Though now I know I can see it being very useful for some ships I hadn't thought possible.
