Turn Based 4x games for multiplayer?

Hello all,

Recently one of my friends who was one of the original members of my BBS back in 1991 found a web based version of VGA Planets. VGA Planets was one of the big attractions to my BBS back in the day. Fast forward 20 years and now me, my old buddy and my son are trying to get our gaming group interested in playing this new version of VGA Planets. One thing I'm worried about is, you can't pick the 'host' specifications on the web version, like turns per day, etc as was on the BBS version and I'm not sure that playing 1 turn\day when early in the game turns only take about 5 minutes will hold his interest.

What other 4x games are out there what will let multiple players play on a lan or over the internet or PBEM AND let you configure the host specs, like turns per day, map size, etc.? We tried this with Space Empires 4 a few years ago and their PBEM is a kludge and the work around written by a fanboy wasn't foolproof, and all this really put a damper on playing. Is there any 4x game out there that has all I'm looking for in one box?

I think Sword of the Stars does, but you would have to check it out.

Armada 2526 with the addon....very soon. [;)]

I think this is exactly what you and your friends are looking for. Though, you can't say how many turns per day have to be played in pbem (you may suggest that i guess).

+1 to what Anguille said. Armada 2526 is already a fun 4x game, and will be only more so with the addition of PBEM play in the upcoming expansion.
