Installation issue

When I go to install RotS, it doesn't have a destination folder prepopulated. I tried just installing it in my DW folder, but I get an error at the end of the installer (actually, I get the error wherever I try to install).

DW-RotS-Update-v1504Beta.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x10106018" referenced memory at "0x00006174". The memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program.

Now, nothing works. I tried reinstalling RotS, but I always get the same error. I would reinstall everything, but Matrix says I have No Downloads available for DW.

OK, running the installer as admin overcame the above error. However, I still can't get anything but the Game Menu to come up, and it looks like it is the old DW menu.

If I try to update, it hangs up and stops responding. If I click on Manual it shows the old DW manual. If I click on Play DW, it hangs and I get this error.
EventType clr20r3, P1 distantworlds.exe, P2 1.5.0.4, P3 4d415bc5, P4 distantworlds.types, P5 1.5.0.4, P6 4d40a49b, P7 174, P8 12ca, P9 system.applicationexception, P10 NIL.
Event viewer says it is a .NET Runtime 2.0 Error.

I also verified that they upgradefighters.png was indeed installed.

Okay, so I found out how to redownload DW. I did so and then reinstalled RotS. I get the same error message as above (the second one).

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I seem to recall another one of us having this...he fixed it by uninstalling all the .NET versions he had and then reinstalled the one required by DW. I have a newer one than 2.0 I think and never had a problem, I suspect the problem comes from having multiple .NET versions.

Hi Belouski,

If the destination folder was not already set to your DW folder when you ran the installer for ROTS, it means there was a problem with your DW installation. You can absolutely re-download, but if your link has expired you will need to ask our Help Desk for another download link (a better solution for that is in the works, but for now you need to contact us).

Uninstall both games and run a utility like CCleaner to make sure all temporary files and unused registry settings are removed, then reinstall. You may also need to repair your installation of .NET based on those errors, but let's try the reinstall first.

Edit: Ah, I see the reinstall worked, but you are still getting the error. I would advise a .NET repair then, see the Tech Support FAQ thread here:
