The Great SPWAW Map Contest 2003

This is the map download and Rules Thread only.

Please Limit This Thread to Map Comments Only, use the other thread for any other map contest comments.

Rules

1. All maps will be numbered by me and sent to the judges. I will create sub-files per category. Judges will not know who designed the maps until after the winners are declared.

2. All maps must have a text. file attached with designers name and category in the text. I will edit the text to remove the name of designer but will leave the category and add map number. I will keep names and numbers.

3.Cut off date for entry will be Jan. 31, 2003

4.Unlimited amount of maps per contestant.

5.Each category winner will receive a Avatar showing he/she was a 2003 map contest winner.

6.Any ties will be resolved per a neutral judge.

7.Categories:
(note: categories can be from any theater)

a. City/Industrial/Urban

b. Rural/Farm/Village

c. Desert/Open Plains/Steeps

d. Beach/Island/Atoll

e. Mountains/Hills/Cliffs

f. Forest/Jungle/Woods

8. Points:
Total points max per map 0-50 max
Extra points for Special just a great/cool map 0-25 max
Map Bugs 0 (-10) max

So.. a map might be judged like this, 30 points (Art), 12 points (bonus), -3 (a building in a river,or invisible) for a total of 39 points

Remember! Size does not matter! I am sure the judges will score a map on its artwork, not its size.

I will send the maps to the judges after I assign a number and edit the text.files. Then I will post maps here in groups of 5

Cut off date 1/31/03

I will NOT be in the contest, and if need be I will act as tie breaker judge.

All contestants!!! please do not post any comments about your map!! If you see a post about your map and comment on it or take credit for it, the map will be disqualified and removed! We want to pass the maps onto the gamming public as soon as possible and will ask OKW, Tankhead, Redleg, The Raiders, and Fabio to post all maps in one zip after the contest. Last year we had over 30 maps! And I hope for even more this year!

one more comment..Please play nice! This contest is for all of our family to learn and share map making techniques and provide the players with the best PBEM/Online Maps.

Enjoy! Have fun and get to making those maps!!!!

Send all maps to Jesse.l.housley@verizon.net

maps

Are maps used in already posted scenarios eligible for the contest?
Or should the maps be entirely new?

BTW, a little hint to check/audit hexes for bugs.
Use H2H. The hex information boxes pop up instantly. It is about 10 times quicker than the regular SPWaW.

Yes, because not all players download or play all scenarios.

I hope I'm not off topic, but how does one view a map without setting up a battle and then clicking "view map." I keep getting asked to pick a map to fight on and I don't know how to do it any other way.

To view maps...

Post by challenge »

I don't have the game on this machine so I'm going from memory...

Start the game (duh), and pick single player (solitare). From the next screen which is the one listing Scenarios, Campaigns, Load Saved, etc.; click the button labeled Edit. This takes you to the Scenario Editor where you set up parameters for the game.

In the middle of the screen are selections for all the map options: season and type, size, etc. There is a buton labled "Load"; click it and you go to a page listing the maps. Clicking next and you cycle through them page by page. Select one and click "continue".

This takes you back to the scenario edit screen. Click "Edit" and the map opens in an editor. From here you can view the map, change the type, value and position of the Victory Hexes, change the start lines as well as who starts on what side of the map, and edit the terrain on the map itself. If you change the map you can save it in a blank spot.

If you save the scenario when you exit the scenario editor you will save any changes you made to the original map, so think about that before hand.

Thanks challenge! I had gotten to the "Load" and "Continue" part but didn't think to click "edit." I'll try it when I get home.

Hi M4 Jess,

I posted an hypothetical scenario with a map I designed here:

showthread.php?s=&threadid=28767

It is not historical, so is it eligible for the Desert section ?

If yes, please take it as my participation to your contest.

I can send it separately from the scenario if you wish.

Cheers,

Cat Lord:
I am not an "official" but I think the thing to do is save your map in the map editor and send in for inclusion. This would make it much easier for Jess and the others to deal with.

And now if I have already d/l and played this scen, I will know that the map comes from Catlord..even though the idea was to submit the maps to M4Jess who then anonymizes them and sends to us.

No good... :(

Btw, non-historical and historical maps are treated the same.

:o Sorry, I did not get it.

Forget about this map, it is good for the scenario but may not be good in general.

I'll do another anonymous one if I want to participate to M4Jess contest.

Sorry again.
