AIR RAID PEARL HARBOR-THIS IS NO DRILL!!
"December 7, 1941 a date which will live in
infamy." Let us never forget this date. For me, my dad was at Pearl Harbor, on the USS
Tennessee (BB-43). He was getting ready to play baseball that Sunday morning, but his plans got changed for the next 4 1/2 years. We went to the PH 50th in 1991. Even though I'm a veteran (no combat experience)I sometimes see war as maps and tactics. Seeing my dad and his old buddies and the others, made me realize these are the guys we now read about and play our scenarios about. I guess this is just something to think about. A side note, the reason so many guys died on the USS Arizona, is the night before they won a battle of the bands competition, and were allowed to sleep
past reville.
The motto of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association is "Keep America Strong".

I was stationed at Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Base, in Oahu, and had the honor quite a few times to visit the Arizona, very moving to see the oil still rise from the depths, to look around and visualize the horror of that day. Our base still had some reminders of the attack, pockmarked bunkers on the antennae hill, a marker where a Japanese plane crashed near the school...

In memory to all who payed the ultimate price.

We so much enjoy "playing" WWII scenerios as part of a wonderful hobby. However, let us never lose site of what they depict and especially those who really lived them.

As a vet myself (no combat, but lots of Cold War tension), I decided to wear my old ship's cap (USS Arkansas, CGN-41) to work today. Sort of a test to see how many people would ask me why. I work retail, in shirt and tie, so the cap is definitely out-of-place.

Well, after 7 hours, only 2 people asked. One was a coworker, the other a customer who's grandson just began his first deployment overseas.

I have had the solemn honor of sailing past the Arizona memorial on numerous occasions, and visited her once. Each time, I felt a sense of profound sorrow for those whose lives were ended, and a surge of pride, because they did what I was doing, serving their nation to the best of their abilties. And because they paid the ultimate price, I live in the greatest country this world has seen.

Let us never forget. Teach your children, remind your peers, thank your elders.

Thanks for adding some personal history for us. I honor you father and all Pearl Harbor
survivors, especially those that paid the
ultimate price, with their lives. Dec 7 a date that always has a permanent place in our thoughts as Americans. Even having visited Pearl Harbor many times, the emotions are always strong.
