No turn for me to play, so I had to resort to JFB's favorite sport, counting pilots in training. Last turn started implementing R&D program as outlined above, but more on that later.
I also added a timeline of major events, there is a permalink in the first post and in my signature. Yes, I'm that bored ... [:(]

RE: Panzers in Pacific - RA Mod - BBW vs Hortlund
Still no turn, so i did a lengthy update. Sorry for the wall of text, but, like I said, I'm bored.
Air war
It would appear that my opponent has forsaken the control of the skies of Malaya and Philippines. Judging from recon, he has concentrated his forces on Java, probably training his pilots and waiting for Japanese invasion of that island. This looks like a prudent strategy. It also means that I will have to commit a large chink of my fighter units to cover that invasion, when the time comes. On Philippines, USAAF fighters are on Clark, but refuse to tangle with Tainan boys. Saburo is getting restless. I usually recall him to TRACOM as soon as he gets his first kill, since I really hate loosing him, but from 20 kills claimed by Tainan kokutai, none is his.
Recon also shows high numbers of enemy fighters station in Rangoon. I’ve sent 3rd Kokutai to investigate, flying from Bangkok. We’ll see how that goes.
In China, PJ has tried to ambush Japanese bombers harassing Chinese troops on several occasion, but without much success. In the last few turns, his bombers attacking Japanese 38th Division just east of Ichang were intercepted by leaky CAP from Hankow. Ki-27s even managed to score few kills against SB-2s. So, last turn he sent AVG sweeping over the hex, but my boys wisely decided to stay home and have some sake instead. Had he sent them directly over Hankow, it would probably be slaughter. Until I can get some real planes up there, I’ve grounded all my fighters in the region and will fly only the most essential bomber raids.
Malaya
December 7th invasion of Mersing combined with the early elimination of Force Z has proved to be fatal for any meaningful defense of the peninsula. Malaya campaign has turned into two separate battles, elimination of Temuloh-Kuala Lumpur pocket and Singapore attack. This required some serious force shifting. My opponent decision to pull back his air force made this rather painless, much to my relief. My main force is concentrating in Johore for attack on Singers. In the next week or so I will have 4th, 5th, 18th, 33rd and 38th division there, plus additional artillery units. Count Terauchi (Southern Army) has arrived from Saigon to personally oversea this operation, stealing Yamashira’s thunder, who is in charge of the elimination of the northern pocket. Needless to say, Tiger of Malaya is not happy with this. This should, hopefully, allow quick resolution of the Singapore and free up forces needed for Palembang operation.
Yamashira has under his command Imperial Guards, which has taken Aloa Star and is advancing towards Georgetown and Taiping, 56th division minus one regiment and 1st and 6th Tank regiments. Out of 7 divisions currently deployed in Malaya, at least three will be sent to Burma as soon as they are available.
Malaya front is supported by 3rd Air division, consisting of 59th and 64th fighter Sentais (total 51 Ki-43Ib), 12th, 14th, 60th, 62nd and 98th bomber Sentais ( ~130 Ki-21 IIa) operating from Kuantan and Kompong Trach. In addition, units of 22nd Air Flotilla are tasked with blocking of Malacca Straight, flying from Kota Bharu. They already mauled one convoy, sinking 8 transport ships in one go. These forces consist of Bihoro, Kanoya and Genzan Kokutais, flying G3M and G4M bombers and Yamada Kokutai, flying A6M2 fighters.
CruDiv3 (Atago and Chokai) intercepted one convoy just north of Batavia, escorted by RN light cruisers. No singings were reported, but heavy blows were exchanged. Atago is currently in Saigon, with 30 sys damage.
Philippines
Luzon
Despite my expectations, PJ has divided his forces between Clark and Manila. I’m trying to move my main formations, 21st Division and 65th Brigade, from Clark to Manila and defeat him in detail. I already have 2 infantry, one engineer and recon regiment inside the city, but it will take me at least three more days to gather my forces. I’m also trying to get one recon regiment into the hex east of Manila, so his forces won’t have a retreat path. If I manage to pull this out (or if PJ lets me pull this out, because it really depends more on his actions than mine), it would leave only about 1200 AV in Clark (judging by artillery intelligence). With additional units from either Malaya and/or other fronts, Philippines campaign may be over before the end of January.
Iba has reached AF level 4 and 5th Air division is being assembled there. All bomber Sentais (16th, 27th, 31st and 90th, ~105 A/C) are equipped with Ki-21 Ic. All Ki-48 will be sent to China. Ic will be replaced by IIa models as they become available and moved to ASW duties later on.
Mindanao
Japanese forces have taken Butuan and are advancing towards Malaybalay. 146th Regiment is en route to Davao. After this town has been liberated, regiment will reload and head for Cotabatu, from where it will advance on foot towards Cagayan.
South DEI
Mandanao and Ternate have been liberated and invasion of Kendari is in progress, supported by BatDiv2/1 (Fuso and Yamashiro) PJ has a squadron of PT boats in the area, making a nuisance of themselves.
The Scourge of the Pacific
Yep, I’m talking about Boise. She raided Babeldoab few nights ago. Fortunately, I had Myoko and 4 DDs reloading in port. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough. Boise took 22 hits and disappeared, leaving Myoko at 48/22/13 damage and all 4 DDs banged up. I can hope that Myoko’s 203mm guns have done enough damage to sent that damned ship to the bottom, but I somehow doubt that.
South Seas
Rabaul is quickly being built up into major base. Preparations for Port Moresby invasion are under way, but I do not dare to try it until I can get some serious air support, which means at least 2 weeks. Additional forces are being send to this front, in preparation for the Operation Kitaoroshi. Very hush-hush at the moment…
Central Pacific
CarDiv1 is limping towards Kwajalein, sailing on fumes. It will have just enough fuel to make anchor. I do hope that there are no subs lurking about. After that, Akagi will remain in port to repair damage and help the war effort by resizing few training squadrons and Kaga will, after replenishing its air groups, head out to meet with the rest of Kido Butai in support of the Operation Jama.
China
Not quite sure what I want to do here. For now, I’m trying to free up as much AV as possible by shifting small Chinese units around to meet garrison requirements. I pulled out of Ichang, which PJ took few turns later. But then he followed me across the river with 7 corps and tried to push forward. 38th Division held out against several attacks of the Chinese hordes. I got some reinforcements and tried counter attack, but only got 1-2, resulting in some 4 000 Japanese casualties. Further reinforcements are on the way. If I can demolish this group, it would help me protect my flank in case I move north towards Nanyang.

December 26th, 1941
Philippines
Luzon
21st Division and 65th Brigade entered Manila from the north. Now we have about 1100AV in the city, against enemy's ~650. General attack has been ordered for tomorrow. Not sure if that was the smartest thing, but I don't have much to lose.
Mindanao
Baby KB has been lurking few hexes south of Davao for three turns now, refusing to launch a strike against enemy TFs at Davao port. I feel I'm doing something wrong here. An invasion fleet is also present, ready to storm the beach, but I want to clear the path first. I'll have to resort to SCTF to do it for me, since my pilots refuse to do so.
Malaya
33rd division is unloading in Mersing, 38th is about week away. Should be able to cross the Strait in less than 15 days. I-166 sunk Australian AMC just south of Singapore. I have SCTF patrols between Malaya and Java and Sumatra. If PJ tries to evacuate, I should be able to catch him.
In the North, Imperial Guard is advancing towards Georgetown. There are some ships in port there, so naval bombers from Kota Bharu will try port strike.
Yamashira is creeping through the jungle. I'm about week behind schedule here, because my units decided to reset their movement to zero. Annoying.
Burma
3rd Kokutai sweeped over Rangoon. On day 1, losses were about 1:1 against AVG and Buffaloes. On day 2, we got 11:0. On day three, there was no opposition.
A recon regiment finally emerged from the jungle and took Tavoy, which was abandoned. Tanks should have been here almost a week ago, but they also reseted their movement. Other units are slowly following. At Pegu, Japanese and Brits are looking at each other across the river. I'm not very fond of idea of attacking there.
New Guinea
For two days enemy TF has been unloading in Port Moresby and for two days my pilots in Rabaul choose to stay home instead of attacking them. I placed the most aggressive commanders I could find in charge, but to no avail. I have heavy cruiser force in Rabaul that I could have sent, but they are out of fuel, and Rabaul has none because some genius forget to send tankers from Truk.
Other news
My main carrier force, CarDiv2 and 5 is roaming the ocean between CONUSA and Hawaii since the start of the war. On several occasions, I had reports about enemy convoys sighted, but no strikes were launched. So, I finally gave up and decided to pull them home. They should be just in time for Operation Jama.
When I think what I could have accomplished with those ships, it makes me want to poke my eye out. Such a waste of time and fuel.

R&D
Well, I went and did it. Most of the R&D plans outlined above are now in motion. This is how it looks ATM:

To the far right is the number of factories under repair, next to it is the number of repaired factories.
A6M3 is progressing quite nicely, which is to be expected, since it's DoA is in less than two months. D4Y1 repaired 4 factories in 3 days, which is very promising.
I also discovered something about engine R&D. Apparently, those factories repair just like the production ones, one point per day. Is this WAD?
Anyway, I just got report saying that Aichi-60 has been accelerated, just 19 days since the beginning of the scenario. No clue how that happened.

RE: R&D
Not much to report in these last few turns. Game's going a bit slow for my taste, only did 5 turns last week.
I'm mainly trying to get my forces in place in every theater. 33rd and 38th Divisions have unloaded in Mersing and are progressing towards Johore. In about a week Terauchi will issue an order for general assault across the Straight. That should be interesting to watch.
Recon shows 10 units in Palembang. I can hear them shoveling dirt and mixing concrete from here. Need to organize some air raids to slow them down a bit.I suppose PJ moved everything that isn't nailed down to the city. Considering my luck with capturing oil centers, I will be happy if i get half of them intact. In Miri I got 112 good ones.
In Luzon, I'm shuttling few more units to Manila. I have about 1000AV there, but I need more, if I'm going to evict Allies from the city. Stand off at Clark. PJ ambushed one Kate chutai that was atatcking shipping around Philipines and massacred it. It lost all 9 planes and 7 pilots in one day. Zeroes from Iba refused to fly escort.
I finally cleared Davao port and landed there. It fell yesterday. I have two regiments in Mindanao, plus one SNLF batallion. Will probably throw 8th Tanks from Babeldoab into the fray as well.
Kendari is taken and invasion of Amboin is in progress. It took me three or for days to cleat PTs that were there.
Baker and Canton are liberated. When KB returns from it's cruise, we will comence Operation Jama.
R&D is progressing nicely. A6M3 already has 25 repaired factories.
All in all, we are on schedule. Only thing that is worrying me is that I have no idea where US carriers are, but if all goes as planned, they should reveal themself soon enough.

RE: R&D
Well, while battles unfold nicely so far, Allied entrenchment in Palembang spells major problems for the Empire.
Quite a serious investment in acceleration... As about new Japanese planes, A6M3b, IMO, is only marginally better than A6M2, but A6M4 and further planes should be a major improvement.

I would place an AKE or two (Lima Class should be finishing up conversions by now) in NW Borneo. Run in multiple CA lead Bombardment TF to Palembang to slow down building and disrupt/destroy engineer squads.

Naval bombardments can hit facilities, though.

RE: R&D
Yup, Palembang will be a tricky one. I have one AKE in region, but I'm afraid of sending bombardment TFs because of the mines. I'll set up 2 or 3 bomber groups in Sinkawang and start aerial campaign. The problem is I will probably have to use Navy bombers for that and I really hate using them on ground attack. Army bomber sentais are tied up over Manila and Singapore.

RE: R&D
I think you have a few 19 knot DMS that you could add to each TF (sweep away mines along with DDs). You are not looking for speed here. Also, if you can afford to, capture Singkep to allow you to use Army fighters for LRCAP and free up your Zeros for other missions.

RE: R&D
I have plenty of 19 knot DMS, and I have several of them handy. It just never occurred to me to include them in bombardment TF. I'll give it a go and see what happens.

IJN DD
After consulting with John, this is what I came up regarding Imperial destroyers deployment and conversions.
Fleet Destroyers

These are divided into two groups, carrier escorts and surface combatants escorts. CV escorts are chosen because of their AA guns.As Yugumo and Akitsuki class becomes more available, Fubuki II & III will be replaced in this role. Fubuki I gets increased endurance in 1/41 upgrade to 4750.
Some people are converting Mutsukis to APD, and probably I will too, later in the war, but for now, I want every Long Lance I can get.
APD

These will be very useful when reinforcing forward bases becomes dangerous. Until then, they will form the backbone of my dedicated ASW groups.

The shepherd dogs of SRA. Some of these start without any ASW weapons, which has to make one wonder about the logic behind it. An escort vessel without DC racks? What is she supposed to guard against?Chinese pirates? Makes you want to slap someone in IJN... [:D]

Tainan boys swept Port Moresby today, after recon showed Allies are concentrating fighters there. Results were excellent. For the cost of one A6M crashed on landing, Saburo and friends reported 11 F4F Wildcats from VF-6 downed. I need to see where this units came from. We will try another sweep tomorrow, but I doubt that PJ will let his boys out to play.
In Philippines, PJ set P-40s on naval attack. 77th Sentai, flying Ki-43 Ic from Iba, intercepted them and killed 10 in the air, for 3 Oscars lost in air and one ops.
But enough with good news.
Sinkawang become important FOB. Two Navy bombers units are based there, together with one A6M and one recon unit. Betties and Nells launched several strikes today against enemy shipping between Sumatra and Java, inlcuding some in Batavia port. Needless to say, Zeroes stayed home. Without escorts, bombers were mauled by Buffaloes flying from Batavia. Total losses were 11 G3 and 9 G4. But they did score some hits, sinking several ships and discovering Durban and Dragon in a convoy in Oosthaven. CruDiv1 (all 4 Mogamis) is 80 miles north of Batavia and will sail there tomorrow, hopefuly to settle a debt of Sinkawang disaster in the night of December 7/8th. that battle constitutes almost half of my lost ships so far. Also, I brought 3rd Kokutai from Saigon, where they were resting after handling AVG A squadron over Rangoon, and they will try to deal some retribution upon Batavia Buffaloes.
In other news, here's a review of my R&D factories. Every A6M3 factory is now repairing one point per day. The first will be fully repaired in about 12 days at this rate.

RE: IJN DD
Well, apparently we have a shortage of drop tanks in Sinkawang. Zeros didn't fly against Batavia today, and they won't for at least few more days, until I can get some supply there. Fortunately, I have a convoy en route that can be diverted. In the mean time, Tanaka's BatDiv2/2 will rendezvous with DMs tomorrow 200 miles north of Batavia and try to cause chaos in that port.
This is what we caught today, in two separate engagements on opposite sides of Pacific.

Curita's CruDiv5 sailed into Oosthaven and tangled with Durban and friends. Durban was hit 4 times and left on fire. Dragon wasn't present, so hopefuly she sucumbed to the wounds she got from previous encounters with IJN>Then Curita did what he should have done at Leyte, went after the transports and kill them all. Among sunk ships was liner West Point, a very valuable unit, especialy this early in the game. that got to hurt.. Not sure what PJ was planning with those ships and what were they doing in Oosthaven. Most likely he wanted to evacuate some troops from DEI, but why wait so long? Lack of PPs? Tthose transports seem way too important to be just sitting idle so close to the front line...
Nagumo's strike force, while closing to Line Islands in support of Operation Jama, stumbled upon empty transports, escorted by a DD. KB pilots managed to sunk 4 President class APs and DD Perkins.
In other news, Terauchi is "promoted" to a comfy new position in tokyo, away from the front. New commander of Southern Army has finaly gathered all his forces for attack on Singapore and issued an order for an assault. I have 2500+ AV in Johore. With some luck, it would be possible to storm teh city on the first asault. Northern pocket is divided into two groups, one in Temuloh and the other was sent 40 miles north of Kuala Lumpur, probably to block IG division coming from North. Not sure this was PJ's best option, though. Anyway, we shoudl be able to clear Johore-Bankok railway in the next few days.
Port Moresby invasion is on the way, shoudl land in two days, covered by Abe's West Strike Force (CVLs, CVEs and Kaga), plus 40 Zeros and 120 Betties from Rabaul. It looks like PJ choose to form 30th Bde in the town, which is kinda nice. Japanese Railroad company has a little project planned in Burma and needs all the workforce it can muster.

RE: IJN DD
Ise and Hyuga, escorted by Nagara's DesRon and 3 DMS, entered Batavia's port in the night of January 5th. They encountered several ships, including one tanker and sunk them all, then proceeded to bombard the town. DMS got shot up by shore batteries and Shiokaze and Umikaze cleaned one mine each with their hulls. Shiokaze might make it, while Umikaze is leaning to port side, with heavy flotation damage (80+). I'm afraid she will not make it through the night. This will be my first war ship lost, if I don't count APD and TB each, sunk at battle of Sinkawang.
Ise and Hyuga continued to bombarding Batavia, with following result:
There are 9 reported ships in harbour, so Navy bombers will attack tomorrow. Today's sweep by 3rd Kokutai didn't meet any opposition in the air.
In other news, CarDiv2 and CarDiv5 are still causing mayhem around Christmas Island. Nagumo bagged xAP Santa Maria, APD Waters, AP Harris and AK Bellatrix. There are still several enemy's TFs in the area, one of which, near Palmyra, reportedly contains a BB. Fortunately, we still have some torpedoes left and will try to catch it tomorrow.
Philippines
Assault at Manila achieved 1:1 odds, reduced forts to 2 and caused 1493 Japanese casualties and 662 Allied. But if you look at the report, it says:
Japanese ground losses:
1493 casualties reported
Squads: 1 destroyed, 92 disabled
Non Combat: 3 destroyed, 84 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 5 disabled
Allied ground losses:
662 casualties reported
Squads: 8 destroyed, 61 disabled
Non Combat: 9 destroyed, 126 disabled
Engineers: 1 destroyed, 7 disabled
So I lost 4 squads and additional 181 disabled, while they lost 18 and 194 disabled, but still I have higher casualties reported. Anyway, we will attack tomorrow again.
For days now, PJ has been sending his P35 to strafe and bomb Iba, causing some damage and killing few planes on the ground every turn. I have a full sentai of Oscars there, set at 50% CAP, but they refuse to fly. Bombing missions fly every day without a problem. I already sacked sentai CO, but that didn't help. I had to resort to LRCAP from another base, we'll see how that goes.
Sub war
I-162 placed 2 fishes into Cornwall near Diamond Harbor and took 5 hits in return. She'll be OK, but Cornwall is reported sunk. Lets hope she stays that way.
On the other side, in first sub action by the Allies in more than a week, S-38 sneak through 4 SC and sunk tanker Goyo Maru with two torps. Needless to say, she was filled with fuel.
Port Moresby invasion has landed, managed to unload all the troops in one go. They were loaded on a brand new amphibious fleet, consisting of converted Toho class xAKs. PJ has reinforced PM with Torres Straight battalion, and has 215 AV. I brought about 470, hopefully it will be enough. If not, there is plenty more in Rabaul, which is now port 5 and AF 7, with about 100k supply and fuel each.

Guns lost 54 (15 destroyed, 39 disabled)
Manpower hits 1
Fires 54
Airbase hits 9
Airbase supply hits 4
Runway hits 53

He just landed the 18th UK Division (started at Cape Town) in southern Sumatra and I would imagine it will march to Palembang. He is prepared to lose that division, but in the process trash the oil and refineries at Palembang. I have landed the 3 at sea British Brigades there and even though Palembang was captured, the economic assets were trashed.
You will now need to take a long term approach in capturing Palembang and rather than a single division, will need to bring overwhelming force to avoid an economic disaster. Toboali would have just moved up my list of bases to capture.
If you have any paras available, you may need to take the small base next to Palembang to prevent the Brits from catching the train into Palembang. I don't know your disposition of forces, but a quick grab of Palembang may need to be attempted unless you are totally out of position to do so.

Concur with Michael. Be VERY careful moving in on Palembang. An indirect approach is best. In this game you cannot afford to have Palembang crippled by the Allies: VERY BAD!

RE: IJN DD
Hmm, that's a nasty situation. It did occur to me that PJ has landed some reinforcements, there were 4 units in Oostahaven last turn, but entire 18th? I do have paras in Sinkawang, but not nearly enough troops for a full scale invasion. Singapore group (5+ divisions) will probably cross the straight today. Depending on their state after the shock attack, I can pull 4 back, but it will take at least 10 days to get them back to Mersing and load them up on transports. At least shipping is available in Saigon.
Of course, if I take Singers in first go, (I doubt he has more than 600AV in the city) situation will change dramatically, but still, I don't see how can I stop those reinforcements from entering Palembang. I'm days late and even if my paras manage to cut them off, they can't hold out that long. I might as well continue with my schedule and avoid doing something stupid in a rush. What do you guys think?
What's the worst case scenario for damaged oil in Palembang? Until now, I never had more than half of wells damaged. Anyone had more?
