Miraculous saving, bug or feature?

Post by Harovan »

Greetings fellow armchair generals. First post here. I got WitE about 2 weeks ago and since I'm not such a big friend of scenarios (played three of them though) I decided to take the grand campaign as a learning ground. And to make sure I get my rear handed, I chose the axis on challenging. [:D]

Here's the situation around Vitebsk in turn 6. I just drove panzer group 3 as "hammer" north through that massive blob of soviet units, that spawned after turn 3, hoping to create a pocket. But alas, terrain was too bad, and the Ninth army as "anvil" got stuck halfway through.

I thought, ok, unable to close the pocket this turn, but since I cut all rail lines and terrain is bad (forests, swamps, rough and lots of ZoCs), they should at least get a slight supply shortage, they make a move out but their MPs won't be enough and may be next turn I can close the bag.

I hit end of turn, expecting a bunch of Soviet divisions with at least a yellow supply outline. But instead, I saw this picture:

Now the question is, where are they gone, and how? May be I missed an evacuation button somewhere in the massive interface (as I said, I'm new and still learning). Or is that a bug?

Cavlancer asked me about this one. Looks like you are playing version 1.01 there was a bug that allowed the AI to do complete vanishing acts like that, but IIRC it is corrected in either version 1.02 official or in one of the beta patches. I honestly cannot remember.

But it is a bug. One that has been identified and corrected.

I know Cavlancer from another forum. [:)] I'm on 1.02, I patched up right after installing. I don't do beta patches, though, so not on 1.03 yet.

Okay, the Beta patches are very safe from 2by3 and Matrix. It might have been patched in one of the Beta patches or upcoming. They release the Beta patches as they get things fixed and then make a big official patch.

But until then, the AI needs all the help it can get. LOL

I know, I read part of your AAR.

And does patching up during a running campaign work? I certainly don't want to ruin savegames of a game as epic as this, just to hear afterwards, you shouldn't have done this. But if this works, I might patch up even now.

Yeah you can patch up your current game, no problem. You just miss out on some database changes I think.

Never had a problem with that, either.

Yes - but also note that there is a clear path out of the pocket with no ZOC for all of the units.

I can see that, but every unit except the routed ones does have a ZoC at present, many of the units have endured multiple battles this turn, are exhausted and just can't have the MP needed to get out. If some got moving, they should be in the northern part of the bag now or north of it, but there aren't any units either, only a big empty space.

In clear weather with no EZOCs interfering it doent look strange to me. Keep in mind minimum number of MPs for foot units I think is 8 and max 16. And MP costs for clear and light woods would be 1 for foot units as well.
