Excel cut and paste

Post by Buck Beach »

Trying to move some ships around that I have been adding. Got a block of some 80 ships that I added one by one with the Editor and am now trying to cut them out of their current position and add them back lower in the list of ships using Command Prompt Export/Import function.

The Excel part of the work seem to go OK, except I had to re-number the ship/slots from the original line(s)number. Imported them back into the Scen data form and ended up with both of the sets showing. Why??

Also is there a better way to move large blocks without having to re-number them?

What I do is cut it from where it is & then paste it where I want it then when I'm done with that, I'll resort just the column where the # is leaving all the other columns as they are then import it into the scenario file

Let say I'm cutting ships 17001 thru 17088 (Excel line 17002). I paste at 18001 thru 18088. Now my Excel line is 18002 but my ship is 17001. I want my ship to be numbered 18001. Easy enough for one or two entries but I want to start at 18001 and re-number until 18088.

I know it can be done but how without having to learn all about Excel (too old for such a project)?

Also, any ideas as to why my import didn't omit the moved ships?

To re-number in Excel: hand write the first number in, highlight the entire section of the column, click edit -- fill -- series. That should resequence the boxes properly.

I have never used WiTPLoad

It is a wonderful mod tool if you know what your doing. Pretty easy actually, but, I have a way of making everything hard.

Thanks for your suggestion.

The only thing I can think of to cause that would be you copied instead cut so it ended up in 2 places.

In your example if once you've got it where you want it even though it's still numbered 17001-x just click on the ship id# column at the top of the Excel doc (forget exactly what it's called as it's been sometime since I've been working on one of mine) & sort just that column & it should be renumbered to what you need/want it to be. It'll ask you something about data staying w/ records (since it's been so long I forget exactly what it says) answer no as you just want to sort that column not all the records. The data of the ships will stay w/ the correct ship but the ship# will change as that's the only column you sorted. I do it this way all the time when I move alot of things around when working on a scenario. There may be other ways as there's many ways to skin a cat but this is just the way I do it for mass changes as I won't really have to worry about the item # until I've made all my changes. I'll try to get back into my Excel so I can explain it better if you need me to since it's been quite awhile having forget the exact replies you get & such.

I'll try to mess with it again tomorrow with your suggestions and get back if I can't figure it out.

Thanks
