This Game.....

Post by Mofouler »

Really is fucking epic and I haven't even bought it yet. I haven't been this excited about buying a computer game since.... Starcraft.....I've been reading the forums,AAR, and all the other stuff about this game and I've been becoming more and more excited. At first I thought it was solely turn-based and that kind of turned me off abit as I like the feeling of being overwhelmed and you don't get that a lot with Turn based RTS's. But I soon found out its real-time and that really made me happy. Not only that but the community here seems really great and approachable and you don't get that with a lot of places.

This game is really seeming what "spore" was supposed to be. I mean i had such high hopes for it and it basically turned out to be a game with a lot of stuff but no depth at all in any of its aspects. This game seems however that they delivered on its promises and then some. I'm 100% sure that im buying this soon as pay check comes in.

Any suggestions though for first timers. I didn't see a beginners guide anywhere but I may have missed it. But i've read plenty much most of the info on the first page of the AAR and War Reports page and I got a lot of info there.

LOL!!

Great intro post about being excited just from reading all of the wonderful information here in the forums about Distant Worlds.

From what I gather about your post, it really seems like you did you homework. Which I feel puts you beyond what ever beginners guide can do for you.

I agree with you about Spore, I played through once and pretty much never went back. It lacked the depth of what Maxis was known for in the Simcity series, and felt really only skin deep.

I would highly recommend that you also get Return of the Shakturi if you can, because it is really a full realization of Distant Worlds.

I plan to buy the expansion as well. Plus it seems its one of those actual "Good" expansions that actually helps increase the playability of the game unlike some that just..."add a few units...add a maybe 1 new race" but charge like 20 dollars :/. 1 thing though is their a mod launcher for download or is it farely easy to add the mods from the community as I checked those out as well and that guy Woodman really made some nice looking ships for all the races. Is applying the mod just a matter of clicking and dragging some files down. As some games are almost impossible without a mod launcher. Take Star Wars: Empire at war for example. (Could have been amazing game if they just fixed the bugs) Annoying as hell to apply mods without the launcher.

And yes Spore was a huge let down. The game basically wasn't challenging at all, Even on the hardest difficulty. I mean 1 thing that really urked was the fact that I was the "ONLY" ship in my own empire. No Type of fleet or anything. But every other race had ships to protect their space before you even go into their system and those ships were pushovers. And the sad part is the game becomes increasingly easy once you get to a certain point and you can just steam roll everyone. (even the grox) And they were supposed to be the scariest race ingame yet once you put an uber turret on a colony you would never have to return their at all. I mean the game had some great aspects like the terraforming. But the only great thing about the game was creating your own race and that was it :/. Even the expansions were crappy and not worth the money at all.

Welcome aboard Mofouler
if you've got the forum researched even partially than indeed any other tool will not be as effective....you just need to make yourself a nice little galaxy and then learn by reacting to all the stuff that will hit you.

This game is really great in that aspect, the best tool to learn it is the game itself - just put everything on auto or suggest mode and let it teach you the basics as you play. After that you'll want to get some things on manual and at that stage you'll no longer be a beginer.

Thx Lord and Data. Really appreciate the welcome. Just some more questions though. From what I've read the game is still in Beta? So does that mean more expansions are coming and if so? Will they add specific suggestions from the wish list, completely new things for the expansion and stuff from the wish list will be patched in on a seperate stand alone update, or is it a little bit of both. And is there a wiki as that's where I usually go for games if I wanna find specific things out. Sorry for all the questions but this game has me so excited as I've been looking for a new RTS to take away my time. Sc2 is okay but...its just not the same as SC1.

I originally found the game through a review which was quite glowing, but said that some small pieces left things to be desired. That was at launch time. Some time later I went looking for it as I wanted something new. I am not a huge 4X fan, so I don't automatically pick them up.

The game is easy enough to get into, as you can actually automate everything, and pick up one thing at a time. It may be a good idea to keep control of war declarations, but having the AI on suggest is nice. If for nothing else than saying "are you crazy?!".

Once I had the game, what really sold me was the "Insecticide: A mid-game AAR" by Das123.

This is not a RTS like SC. Even if it is real time, it is relaxed, and you can take all the time in the world. You can slow it to a crawl, and do your orders while it is paused. It always pause when you open menus.

Just so you don't expect RTS behavior here.

oooo yeess, that is one heck of an AAR to get your feet wet.
you could say that this game is neither tbs or rts but it has the best of both these worlds
the game itself is not beta anymore but it gets patched frequently and Elliot (the developer from CodeForce) is really close to the forum. If you check the changelogs for the patches so far you'll see class A feedback from him. We've got only one expansion so far, they are not so easy to deliver but we know for sure that at least one other is in the making.
So ya, we have a loong and beneficial future with this game I hope.

Yeah RTS's Game like SC are more fast paced and really based on how fast you can out micro and macro your opponent. This game however has a much broader scale of how to defeat your opponents which I love. I'm most likely going to go on a campaign spreading my "Human" influence throughout the universe but even then the game has mechanics to prevent that from being the only and easiest way to win such as colonies becoming War Weary, War cost, and just the fact that you have to "Supply" your ships with fuel and supplies. It helps impose that actual space game feel that adds a great bit of realism to the game that most other games lack. What really sold me though was the Colony management, and the Ship design segment of the game. I mean its great you can have 2 types of Destroyers for instance maybe 1 specialized for sheild busting while the other focuses more on armor. This may not be the case entirely as I haven't played the game yet but the jist of concept really drives home that "This is your empire and you control its fate". Plus the fact that the Ai handles all the annoying mundane things really helps people from being bored and keeps them occupied with the more engaging parts of the game.

@Data I see his frequent post throughout the forum which really assures me my money isn't being wasted. It shows that he actually listens to his customers and isn't just imposing that "Its my game and I'll make it however I like it" Attitude. The news of more expansions is also awesome. Any details or none atm?

I think I should clarify this, I'm neither the developer of the game (that is Elliot) nor with Matrix (that is Erik). I'm just a gamer like yourself; and interestingly enough the first thing that attracted me to the game was the ship design also [:)]
Good to know as well, Elliot is also a 4x gamer and he visits the forum regularly (at one time there was even a chat with all of us) so we all share the same passion for 4x and now for this great game. That's the guy we should clone. [:)]

ahh, and one more thing related to the new expansion. Both Elliot an Matrix rarely provide speciffic details but every time they said they would do something they did it....so that is a great basis for trusting them all. Atm we only know there will be a next expansion and after that we'll see; in the meantime expect pathes.....this game is barely an year old and has an expansion an a dozen of patches already

Heya, Mofouler! Welcome to the forums! Nice to see that more people are finding this hidden gem.
And, as you already noticed, just ask anything and you should get answers pronto.

Welcome, Mofouler. DW also brought me into the Matrix fold. What's surprised me from playing with the RotS expansion is how the game pace has changed. Before with DW your empire would just expand like wild fire. Now colonization seems to be toned down and more selective. I can't remember if the last Distant Worlds Update 1.0.6.0 was also like this before the RotS expansion.

I like this change. It seem more epic. More of a MOO2 feel.

ahh, you said the magic MOO2 words and I can't stay away
and you are correct, this was brought with the ROTS, 1.0.6.0 still had the wildfire expansion

No, RotS is final (1.5.0.0), but there have been a few patches to address some things.

The latest available (1.5.0.4B) is a Beta patch however - just wanted to clear that up for you.

Erik and Elliot are great, I've never seen the level of support from a company that they've given to DW.

Welcome, Mofouler.
As stated in various way by the other members, DW is THE GAME! Also, the community
members in this game's forum (excepting 1 or 2 specific trollers)are fantastic for
assisting in both game introduction and problem-solving for new players. As one of
the test team members I have to as unbiasedly as possible say that DW is full of
future potential as well. Elliot and Erik, as aforementioned, do listen and attempt
to integrate the best ideas from both the Master and Modders Wish lists often. This
is also one of the reason for many of the patches to date.

Again, welcome.....and enjoy Distant Worlds, the community and the game mods!

Welcome Mofouler!

Like yourself I was reading the forums and for a long time knew about this game, but never got it. I am very glad I finally decided to get it and I agree, with what people have been saying, it really does take the best parts of 4x and RTS games to make a wonderful product.

This is really an awesome community and very approachable like you said. Solid game and an extremely helpful community makes DW stand out, even tho it really doesn't get the publicity it deserves. Glad like me, you have discovered this truly epic game. Payday is a gooood day lol

Welcome and enjoy the game. This forum really is the best place to learn from others and their strategies. Lots of good input and suggestions for improvement and regular comments from the devs make it excellent. Plus it's essentially troll-free.
