Why no damage taken?

Post by Bingeling »

So... My swarm met a bit nasty fleet (see the AAR), and decided to go nasty.

The Giz design crew are a bit retarded and give very little firepower to the ships. The destroyers have 5 shatterforce lasers (9 damage) and 2 terminator point defense. This gives a firepower of 45.

I was hunting a 2000-strength enemy fleet with my destroyers. They are badly outgunned. So they responded by insane numbers.

They target an alien (recovered) capital design with over 700 size and 1550 armor. My boys attacking are 175 or so destroyers [:D].

What happens? Not that easy to see. The game goes to a crawl, which makes sense. But I can not at any time see the shield of that capital take any amount of significant damage. Does the universe complain and rule my lasers illegal? That is, they are never fired? Is there some other ill effect of fleets that large? Destroyer fleets (with about 40 destroyers) have managed to kill large space ports with more than 5000 shield...

I think ships are disobedient and goes after other ships when their fleet target is not in range. But here they had a nice approach on that capital. Head on, capital as the closest target.

Any other explanation for the lack of damage on any enemy ship than the game going belly up and not calculating the damage of 175x5 (or so) lasers? The destroyers have +20% targeting, and tech is quite nice compared to the rest I believe.

The Giz ship design on the other hand, is not nice at all, but that is a different matter. Two shockwave torpedoes (which are fully upgraded by research/spying) would do the design no harm at all. But one day. One day they may get titan beams, and start doing some damage.

I would suspect the overmatch could impact this, ie only a small amount of destroyers actually attacking the capital ship and the rest trying to make it to the others. Even so, you should see some damage. Can you check the enemy designs via the editor?
At any rate, you're not kidding about the swarm....that is one heck of an armada

I was able to change it my my possession and view the design. This would help the war effort ;-)

10 Talassos Shields, 155 each, recharge 1.
20 enhanced armor. Reactive 4 (should not affect the shield?)
Shadowghost ECM (40%)
Fleet countermeasure system (10%)
2 Damage control units (should not affect shield?)
Ion Defense (not relevant).

No fancy Zenox shield like on their cruisers.

And I fail to see how I can kill these, when 40 destroyers with the help of a large space port could not take down a cruiser... It jumped out when low, and recharged.

I have read about changing the overmatch settings, where can I do that? I want my ships to gang up like mad...

in the options screen, selet Your Empire Settings...the highest ratio is 5:1 if I remember correctly

Thanks, took me a while to locate, as I looked in the AI settings :-)

Btw, 20 cruisers and 40 destroyers worked a charm on that fleet. The capital died amazingly fast. Cruisers have fighter bays, and it seemed like maybe fighters did a lot of the job.

I think the game went sloppy at the presence of almost 200 ships in one battle.

We can edit large scale battles to confirm this. If it is so then your AAR's will again be in danger....seems the game is bent on breaking you [:)]

The title was more hinted at the inhabitants than the planned fighting tactics...

Fun stuff though, the game has been rough, hanging by on huge garrisons.

Btw, one other issue from the game, at an earlier point.

40 destroyers attack a space port. They have point blank order. Space port goes down, but as destroyers come close the space port stops taking damage. I modify the fighting distance of the design, and they back off and finish it.

Does this reek of a similar bugs? Too much weapon fire? Do the point defense weapons, if any, join in to hit the space port if close enough? Or could it be some fancy area ion pulse knocking out 40 destroyers (or close to that amount)?

this sounds like a bug, range penalties in reverse

odd... I know sometimes when I have a fleet all of the ships in the fleet do not like to follow the order some of the time. Like especially attack orders for some reason. move orders all of them will follow tho. Looks like all of your ships were moving to attack tho. very strange indeed
