Scenario: Luck & the last Teutonic Knight

Post by slyone »

This scenario crashes around 8th turn with no apparent reason. Somewhere around 8th turn, during AI's move, the program just shuts down.

Does anybody know how this can be treated?

I'll be grateful for any suggestions.

Look at this thread. You're not the 1st, but I don't know if Brent has had time to address this problem.

Scenario Crashes...

Post by Orzel Bialy »

Slyvone,
First of all welcome to the forum...:)

As for the crashes...do any of your other scenarios crash on a regular basis? Or is "Crusader" the only one doing this to you?

DARN IT...JIM BEAT ME TO THE LINK!!! :D :p ;)

Guys,

Thanks for the link. I tried it and but it seems that there is no answer to the problem. I will try the trick with reloading from the autosave but I doubt that it works. The game just quits in the 8th turn and it's probably not the fault of the save file.

Orze³,

Thanks for welcoming. Seems that I'm not the only one from Poland here.

Auto Save...

Post by Orzel Bialy »

Slyvone,

You may want to reload the scenario from scratch...and then save it in a different save slot before the end of the first turn...rather than rely on the autosave feature.
From time to time a save slots can sometimes leave you with "dirty" files. It doesn't happen a lot, but I believe it can mess with game data and make them fail.
Try it out....see what happens. The scenario is too good to give up on. ;)

Actually, there are two other members from Poland...but I'm not one of them :D. I actually live in the USA...just of Polish (3/4)and German (1/4)heritage.

Slyone, a hint on how to find things in these forums is to use the search button at the top. Very useful in finding these things.

SLYONE: This is an on going problem with this scenario, I have personally address the author, but he is presently working on more important projects so his time is precious. I'm sure when he has time he'll look into it. Be patient and play the other available scenarios there's a 100+ in the game and many more available that do work properly with ver 7.1 OOBs. Good hunting.:)

So that little saying caught your eye eh?

Post by Orzel Bialy »

it is my attempt to use a little something my grandfather used to say...although I'm not 100% this is correct in spelling.

I did it with a translator and they can be fussy at times...so perhaps a few of the members that do speak Polish can proof it for me. ;)

Anyway, he used to say "Honor is everything." and I never forgot that...although I never learned how to spell it! lol :D

Ken,

Good job! The spelling is 100% proper. The translated meaning is also OK, however it seems quite an old form (as our grandfathers used to say).

I understand that the next lesson for you and Jim is to learn how to pronounce it.

For the third lesson I suggest old famous Polish tongue-twister "Chrz¹szcz brzmi w trzcinie" which means "cockchafer buzzes in the reed". ;)

LOL...That is a Big Lesson...

Post by Orzel Bialy »

I can remember listening to my grandparents talk to my parents in Polish...and just stratching my head wondering what the Hell they were saying. lol :D
Pronouncing words in Polish is not an easy lesson...most of what I do know are short, swear words that my Brother taught me. lol. :p
Unfortunately my grandparents both passed away by the time I was 11....so everyone curtailed the use of Polish after that. But like I said, I still remember him saying that line whenever I was caught by my parents telling a fib or two! :D
There was also one that he would say when I was trying too hard to do something...it had to do something with "don't push the river, it will flow by on its own" or something like that. He always seemed to have one at the ready.
Anyway, I think he told my brother that the Polish soldiers who served under Napoleon used to have a saying close to it...but I have never been able to verify that. Either way it taught me something that I value and that's what is important!

I had a look at the scenario in the editor yesterday and found the OOB beeing built from very old OOB version. Soviet side OOB appears to have messed units & formations. I couldn´t find a fix and that scenario probably needs to be rebuilt with V7.1 OOB from scratch, although it´s unlikely that author ever will have the time to do it! :D
Scenario crashes for me on turn 8/9 too. I couldn´t find any particular issue that makes the game crash at this mentioned turn8! Odd!

As it seems we´ll never know what happens in this scen.

Ok, enough of you have mentioned this one in partiicular that I will attempt to rebuild it, but I have no idea if that will eliminate the crash. If the crash cannot be resolved then I will save the effort and redo it in Combat Leader

If anyone can determine why it is crashing it will help me in my decision if it is worth redoing it. How about the other Road to Berlin scenarios? Are they OK as is or do they have to be addressed as well?

Thanks
Brent Grenadier Richards

Brent - do what we did in the revised Stalingrad campaign scenarios: use Fred's editor.

Purchase some updated 7.1 oob Russian units - then copy their data into the matching units that need updating using Fred's editor. This worked for the Russian side in Stlgrd cmp. Delete the added units when finished.

You can do this for the German side too :D

Other "Road to Berlin" scenarios

Post by slyone »

Brent,

As regards other scenarios from the "Road to Berlin", besides that they work well, they are excellent!!!!

We (at least I) want more, more, more like these!!!

Hope to see those kind in CL.

Cheers

I´ve not investigated too deeply, but something I found very suspicious is the Russian A0 HQ unit is shifted to AW0 and has a FO attached! When checked with Freds WaWEditor you still see A0 HQ assigned to the slot that it belongs to! I guess incompatibility with current V7.1 OOB and the attachement of a Fo unit to A0 could have something to do with the issue, although it´s far from explaining the crash at turn8/9! Odd...

Rocking H: I know it sounds funny but it happened three (3) times at the same place and turn. I can't tell you exactly since I have not played it in the last 3 to 6 months. I did try it with and older version of SPWAW (?) and it worked past that point so I suspect and agree with you that it's an OOB problem. Wish I could be of more help, but I'm not into programing or designing.
I'm just trying to beat the AI and use up all the scenarios that come down the electronic pipeline.:D ;)

Is the above why the majority of .cmt files carry "Kustrin Corridor" as a second line? Which doesn't show in the title bar, but it is there for most of the scenarios and has been for a long time.

No problem replacing old units with new, that's a cinch with the Editor. BUT: Which are "old" and require replacement? According to which dated OOB set? I don't think there is a lot of difference between the Feb and April OOB's, but there might be for major combatants, particularly Germany and USSR.

Building one's own scenario "from scratch" is a whole new world. If "The Twilight Zone" was one of your favorites ... well, you'll be right at home creating a new scenario. Studying examples of good scenario design - such as those by Brent - is a way to improve rolling your own.
