Are dual-installs possible?

So, I've got a number of opponents.....
Some using every new beta-patch that comes out immediately, and some who prefer the 'safety' in using only official patches.
Being me, I'd like to play all of them, so I tried doing a multi-install through the simple expedient of copying the game-dir to a new location, and then patching only one version.
No dice. Seems like the patches affect generic system-files somewhere on my HD.
Obviously I could simply patch the game back and forth with every new turn, but that leaves a giant window of possible errors, and with a game this size I *really* don't want to risk having to redo a turn. [;)]

So, the question is, can you have multiple versions of WitE on your HD, and if so how?
Is it simply to run through the installer a second time, or does it have to be on another physical drive?

All you generally need to do is to change the name of the executable that is being installed by the beta patch, and then make a desktop shortcut (bypassing the game menu) for that different executable.

If you're familiar with renaming, moving and working with files in Windows, you can do this a couple of different ways. One is to "install" your beta patch into a dummy directory, change name of the WitE exe and then manually copy the patch contents into your 'real' WitE directory. The other way is to rename your WitE before you patch with the beta, and then rename the newly patched exe, and then rename the original exe to its former name.
