Need help looking for a good Age of Rifles successor
Hi, I'm a long time fan of PC wargaming, but I really haven't played in a long time. I'm looking for a good Age of Rifles successor. The game covered such a wide period of conflict and had hundreds if not thousands of scenarios done for it ranging from Colonial English Wars, Napoleon, Africa, the Opium Wars, the Ludlow Massacre, and lots of fictional ones too.
I'm just looking for a game that is the closest thing to a spiritual successor to Age of Rifles (as I've for rights reasons there will most likely be never be a sequel) with a good number of user created scenario base. I've noticed an Age of Muskets game made by Matrix, but I don't know if it covers more than the Napoleonic Era.
Thanks!

Cool. How user friendly would you say most HPS titles are? I took at a look at some of the screenshots, but it's hard to gauge difficulty from just that.

I finally got it working on Dosbox (had a little trouble mounting the CD Rom), so much fun. I just love how it covers such a wide range of history and locations.ORIGINAL: ilovestrategy

Very (as wargames go), and once you've learned your way around one you'll have no trouble with the others. Just don't expect eye candy (although the 2D maps aren't bad). You won't find many user scenarios, though.. the Tiller HPS games were designed NOT to be any sort of construction kit. The flip side is that most games come with a very generous selection of scenarios as long as you don't mind them being centred around variations, historic and otherwise, of the same campaign. Gettysburg has nearly three hundred!
To be honest, though, although I was also a big fan of AoR, things have moved on. I would strongly recommend at least taking a look a couple of real time titles (by which I mean real time, not 'RTS'!), Histwar: Les Grognards and Scourge of War: Gettysburg before taking the plunge - both have demos. Both also offer a much more realistic command experience than the HPS games, although they lack the campaign scale.

But there is still nothing that comes close to AOR!
All titles mentioned so far are focused on specific eras and don't have as much custimzation and scenario building options as AOR.
AOR is like a wargame construction set.

Age of Rifles
I see there are at least three PC magazines to stay away from if you want a honest opinion.......They probably use the same talent pool to get their reviewers from, the ritalin-overdosed pimple faced 12 year olds who dont understand anything that doesnt include the term RTS in in......

I think the only thing they did was try to read the manual and they got confused by something longer than 3 pages.....

This seems to be one of the titles that slipped through the cracks on me.

I freaking loved that game. It came and went really fast, never did figure out why it disappeared from the world so quick.

AOR was really the "Steel Panthers" for XIX century, a real diamond

Hmm, I see Norm Koger was behind it. Perhaps there was too much of a BLACK-BOX hidden behind the scenes to keep interest?
Or maybe the players just switched to TOAW a couple years later. Around that time, there was a lot of competition in the wargaming scene.
