New Public Beta - v1.03 beta 6

Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: The German-Soviet War 1941-1945 is a turn-based World War II strategy game stretching across the entire Eastern Front. Gamers can engage in an epic campaign, including division-sized battles with realistic and historical terrain, weather, orders of battle, logistics and combat results.

The critically and fan-acclaimed Eastern Front mega-game Gary Grigsby’s War in the East just got bigger and better with Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: Don to the Danube! This expansion to the award-winning War in the East comes with a wide array of later war scenarios ranging from short but intense 6 turn bouts like the Battle for Kharkov (1942) to immense 37-turn engagements taking place across multiple nations like Drama on the Danube (Summer 1944 – Spring 1945).

I bought this game on the day it was released and I think it has many things going for it. What I did not realise when I paid my £70 was that I was not buying a finished product. So far I have had to download six patches and still I read that the "game will only be balanced" when enough people play it who can point out its faults.

35 years ago my first wargame, bought as a present for my fifteenth birthday, was "Drang nach Osten" by GDW. In real terms it probably cost more than WITE but worked "straight out of the box" and is still playable today without amy major modifications.

When I bought WITE I wish someone had written on the Matrix website that "this game will be great when you all find what is wrong with it now".

How many more threads will you be copy/pasting this into?

Can I just confirm when you apply a new patch it is compatible with all saved games? (That is the Grand Campaign)

Or will there be some unforseen problems so best to start over again?

Old saves will work with patches. You just won't get the benefit of the data changes, but everything else should work fine. No need to restart.

Thanks for this beta release. I have been playing nonstop since I got the game about a month ago. Your patch corrects several things I found exasperating:
1. The random screen mode switch that turned pop up map info off. I looked and looked on this forum for a fix but found nothing mentioned. Only way I could get it fixed was a reboot of the game.
2. Fatigue was wearing my German Air Force out. Rarely could I field an Air Force in Sept 41 lower than 70 fatigue regardless of how little I used them.
This patch is a BIG change. I could rarely get any reduction for dormant air units. Thought it might be WAD since the Luftwaffe was in horrible shape by Winter '41. In fact my national reserve air force was getting fatigued even back in Germany. Now the program seems to allow a reduction for rest if I dare it. Good work.

I have been an Eastern Front boardgame fan since Stalingrad from Avalon Hill when I was 13. Played over 500 solitaire games of it from age 13-15 with the Germans winning only 5 games. Wrote an article for the General back at that tender age. I am now 61 and the addiction is still alive. In addition I have been a Billings fan since Guadalcanal for the Apple 2+ and a Grigsby fan too. SPI's War in the East/West tandem and GDW DNO/Untendscheden also had me. But this one....wow! No make that WOW! This is heaven.

I wish to praise you all for your massive commitment This is the denouement of the Eastern Front class. You guys are tops. I am realistic enough to understand that a game this big and detail packed will have much in the way of ongoing development. So drive on! We'll help you find them. And thanks again!

I just had this happen while playing a pbem turn with beta 6. First time I have had this happen, so evidently it isn't completely fixed.
It is so rare that I didn't even realize that it was a bug. I did have to reboot the game to get the jumpmap back, though.

This pop-up issue happens to me sometimes when I move factories. Hitting ESC a couple of times while clicking on the main map fixes the issue.
