PBEM Opponent wanted

Post by Volker »

Hallo,

I would like to check out the difference between the HI and the AI. I played a lot against the computer but never against a human opponent. The main reason is that I have not always the time to react quickly.

If you have no problem with no reaction of me on weekends or only one reaction per day or sometimes not a couple of days, it would be nice to mail me.

I have no preferences about nations or periods but have mor experience with Germany in the 1944+ area. I am open to take somewhat completely different but stick to historical confrontations...i.e. do not prefer something like Finland ./. China in 1946...but why not Rumania ./. Russia..

I prefer to activate all preferences alternatives....i.e. C&C, limited ammo, national characteristics etc.

I belong to the "older class", i. e. born in 1961 *s* and I come from Germany. Am I a dinosaurus here?

Regards,

Volker

Welcome Volker,

If you stick around, you'll notice that being a '61 is by no means vintage amongst the gamers here. Heh, you'll almost qualify to rank with us young pups. ;) :D (I'm a '76)

If you can consider playing with C&C OFF, I'd be happy to take you on in a game of just about any setting. If it's OK, set it up as you like and send me the file.

It might be of interest to some that we'll try the "Langang-Ga" scenario from this month's Dirty Dozen. (thanks guys! :D)

I'm IJA, Volker plays the U.S.M.C Marauders. Don't know if we'll post AAR's, but if we play it through, I will certainly post some sort of feedback.

Guys -
I hope you will let me know how Langang-Ga works for this. I was wondering if it would work.

Please!

You bet, Chief... I´ve got a 1974er Rheinpfalz Godramsteiner Königsgarten Bacchus wine label pinned to the wall behind my screen... just because that´s my vintage indeed and my landlord (he made that wine) posted me a note on it...

Volker, if you are looking for an opponent... kein problem!

We're done! One shouldn't be fooled by the small scale - this is a challenge if everything! We played with C&C ON, which added spice to our dish. :) Playing defend in a PBEM isn't easy at all. A battle without any kind of motorized units was also a fresh change. All infantry slug-out.

It ended in a draw, with 3013 p for the U.S. and 2142 for the Japanese. In losses, the U.S. suffered 187 casualties and the IJA had 203. A close call. The Marauders ended up just short of crossing the river to Wallabaum (?), and in good progress of taking control of the road, although that was by no means decided. The IJA thus ended in control of Wallabaum and Langang-Ga, while hard pressed in the center.

When I first looked at how small my force defending the road was, I though the Marauders would steamroll over me. It started that way, with the Rangers leading the way, lethal in close-range combat. (**** bazookas! ) The onslaught eventually stumbled to a slow crawl in the face of fierce japanese fire. (*wonderful* MG gunners! :D ) Volker didn't realise I had three platoons in the north, and didn't leave enough troops around Langang-Ga to defend it. Thus I ended up with two platoons minus a squad in the village, and the third assaulting the road leading south. At that time, it constituted well over half of my ready force. :p Volker completely surrounded me, assaulting the road positions from three directions. With C&C on, and my starting positions scattered, I had a *very* hard time pulling troops back in time. It felt realistic, but the lack of mobility was frustrating.

In all, a great lesson and a good scenario.

Yes, Belisarius is right. I did not realise how large the force in the Northwest was (a company with those numerical strong japanese squads). Initially, I wanted to send one platoon in this direction for a surprise assault on the town in in the south or as a diversion. It was finally wiped out and my own town lost. On the other hand, I put many troops to the Southeast to outflank him what was in effect not a bad decision but I was to slow.

With more troops send to the Northwest and a not so cautious advance it should have been possible to achieve a better result as the American player.

I assume that this is a scenario which most interesting if played for the first time because afterwards the strategies of the other side are relatively clear and surprises not probable.
