FLYING LEATHERNECKS: Vettim(J) vs Spruance(A)...3 day turns

FLYING LEATHERNECKS is one of my favorite John Wayne WWII movies. Its even reasonably historically accurate....with the Marines flying F4F Wildcats at Guadalcanal and then upgrading to Corsairs later in the war. The movie covers the begining of the aerial concept of close air support for the ground troops as opposed to a strict A2A role for fighters. Hopefully with a game title of "Flying Leathernecks" I will be able to get the VMF squadrons into play a bit more in this game than my last(In Harm's Way).

Vettim wanted to start a PBEM with 3 day turns. I had really enjoyed making the transformation from 1 day turns to 2 day turns and have never looked back. However, I have never tried 3 day turns and am very interested in how a game with that length of turn would play out. Vettim and I are both AFBs but I just dont have the time available to master Japanese production so Vettim volunteered to play the dark side.

I think that 3 day turns will slow down the game from a strategic standpoint( it will take longer for Japan to overrun the SRA and then longer for the Allies to march back towards Japan)......but will make the game a bit more unpredictable and exciting from a tactical standpoint. There will probably be more unexpected surface and air combat TF encounters and a chance to pull off a "gotcha" after a 2 day run in at high speed.

I thought that we were going to play the Hakko Ichiu scenario but Vettim chose a 12/8/41 start so that USN CVs wouldnt be accidentally targeted during the 3 day turn at the start.

PDU....off........ I think that this one was an accident but Vettim started planning his 1st turn with this off so we went with it. I know that it makes life difficult for both sides......but I havent played with PDU off in a while so this should be interesting. Without the ability to downgrade Allied fighter groups at the start.....I think that the USN CVs will be flying Buffaloes for quite some time. All the P-38Es that start on the US west coast will also be lost since I cant downgrade them. It will also be tough to work with updrading/replacing losses for the SBDs as there are never enough of them until mid to late 1943. Since I cant downgrade the naval fighters or divebombers to the earlier models I may have to disband groups in order to have enough planes available to keep the carriers full.

The 12/8/41 start is interesting. Japan doesnt get the big 1st turn movement bonus but the Allies do lose 2 BBs at Pearl Harbor as well as have their air forces decimated at both Oahu and Clark. Most of the fighter squadrons at Clark are less than 50% on 12/8/41 and Ive attached a screenie of the PBYs and Marine squadrons at Oahu. I wont be needing the AVs and AVDs for quite some time....with a replacement rate of 17 PBYs/turn it will take some time to both cover the high operational losses and rebuild the shattered squadrons. I will be using land bombers where ever possible for my naval search duties in the Pacific..

CV Enterprise isnt horribly damaged but Im not going to send her back immediately to Pearl for repairs and run the sub gauntlet again.

CV Lexington sails to within F4F-3 range of Wake but I am not able to extract the Wildcats on Wake....they simply wont transfer to Lex....we are so critically short of F4F-3s that the 12 AC that start on Wake are too important to write off on a hopeless atoll. But with the IJN carriers lurking out in the central Pacific CV Lex cannot loiter and must move on.

CA Chicago and a DD were detached from the CV Lex TF to defend Wake against a quick smash and grab but they are spotted by IJN naval search and they must also leave the area.

Farther south, CA Pensacola and CA Louisville are detached as surface raiders to defend against IJN smash and grab assaults in the Gilberts.

PHILIPPINES

Japan captures Batan and invades at Iba. It looks like mostly support troops were landed at Iba so several US and Philippino brigades are ordered to drive the attackers into the sea.

Over a half dozen xAK/AKLs fleeing Hong Kong somehow are routed to the west coast of Luzon by the Japanese air threat and they are sunk in turn by an IJN surface TF centered around CA Maya. MTBs from Hong Kong make an ineffectual attack on IJN shipping off Takao and then retreat towards Luzon. USN PTs from Cavite engage IJN TFs in inconclusive attacks off the north coast of Luzon.

SigInt reports elements of the 20th Infantry Regiment loaded on an LB headed for Mauban. There are also reports of the 9th Infantry Regiment loaded on a Brazil Maru xAK headed towards Mauban. Intel also reports the 16th Engineer Regiment is headed for Mauban as well as the 4th Tank Regiment planning for Lingayen. Im pretty busy trying to crush the landings at Iba so we will see if indeed another assault materializes in the south.

The Cavite BF is safely evacuated from Manila and this turn the Cebu BF will be loaded on transports.

Vettim uses the Japanese air force to pound Clark, and to a lesser extent , Manila. Aircraft losses look respectable on the surface.........66 Allied Ac vs 58 Japanese AC and in A2A its 41 Allied AC vs 38 Japanese AC. But in individual AC the losses include 24 P-40Es...all on Luzon. P-35s and P-36s are also crushed. After the 12/7/41 surprise attack and the 3 days of air assaults from 12/8-12/10/41 the Allied fighter forces on Luzon are virtually destroyed. Japanese AC losses this turn included 4 A6M2s and 13 Nates(over Kota Bharu). If opposing air forces are engaged in an unequal air battle I think that the 3 day turns can really magnify the losses.

DEI

SigInt repots the 2nd Engineer Regiment on a xAK heading to Kuching while the 124th Infantry battalion is loaded on a LB for Miri. Three RN DDs are ordered to cover Miri. The PoW/Repulse SAG withdraws from Singapore to Singkawang to further itself from the Netties at Saigon but still be available to intervene at Mersing. They will be ready if an assault materializes at Kuching.

MALAYA

Vettim reinforces the landings at Kota Bharu. Buffaloes sweep Kota Bharu while nearly every Allied medium bomber in Malaya launches ground attacks against the invaders there. 13 Nates are lost over Malaya. Japan launches 3 deliberate attacks at Kota Bharu...... a 1:1, a 2:1 and then a 1:1 but the 8th Indian Brigade and the FSMV Brigade hold firm. The position almost certainly will be overrun tomorrow and the Allied units are given move orders but they almost certainly will be routed first. Two IJN BBs and a CA cover the landings at Kota Bharu.

12 Vildebeests and 8 Swordfish are staged into Kuala Lampur in the Allies best early war chance to put a torp in an IJN BB....they will be escorted by 18 Buffaloes while another Buffalo and a Blenheim NF squadron sweep the skiies over Kota Bharu.

Malaya army and III Indian Corps troops begin to pull back from the frontiers and mass on Singapore. Delaying actions will be fought on both the coastal and the inland roads that lead south to Singapore. Elements of some III Indian Corps formations begin to load transports at Singapore for withdrawal.

Japan hammers Allied airfields in northern Malaya and Allied bomber formations begin to withdraw to Burma. The Allies lose a lot of fighters this turn but Japan loses alot of bombers......14 Lilys, 13 Sallys, 11 Nells and 5 Bettys.

Vettim immediately stages a horde of fighters and bombers into Kota Bharu as soon as the airfield there is secured. Allied torpedo bombers have to be withdawn now and will try to hit IJN BBs again somewhere in the DEI.

Allied transports loading III Indian Corps troops at Singapore shove off immediately and head south as Japan now controls the skiies over all of Malaya with the capture of Kota Bharu.

Task forces break off...

With the Japanese capture of Kota Bharu, these RN DDs as well as Force Z off Singkawang must now withdraw to esape the Nettie menace. The RN DDs will head to Batavia to engage some IJN subs loitering of Merak while Force Z will head to Balikpappan to refuel.

P-40E squadrons from the Philippines are transferred to Tarakan and Balikpappan. There they will provide LRCAP for Allied naval movements in the Straits of Makassar and the western Celebes Sea.

Japan invades at Wewak and Aitape.

CHINA

Allied troops at Hong Kong repel first a 1:1 and then a 1:2 deliberate attack by IJA troops.

SEAC bombers as well as 2 squadrons of AVG fighters begin to stage to China.

Chinese troops advance into the Japanese front lines at Kweisui in the north to take advantage of the 3x terrain and will invest Canton in the south to take advantage of 4x terrain. In the central plains.....Chinese troops try to dig in at Chengchow and Loyang. So much of Chinese industry and supply is from front line cities that you really need to fight for every one.

You also have to take advantage of what the OOB gives you at the start in China. The Allies start with a massive 2000 plus AV army prepped for Ichang and another nearly 2000 AV army prepped for Sinyang....so these 2 Chinese armies will mass and invest their respective prepped targets. Ichang will be attacked first after it is softened up by Chinese and SEAC medium bombers.

PHILIPPINES

Some 300 Allied AV is sent to Iba .....including the 2 US Army tank battalions.....and an assault will be ordered there next turn to drive the IJA invaders back into the sea.

Meanwhile......Japan invades at Mauban and Vigan. The Vigan invasion is small but the Mauban invasion is large. US and Philippino troops not involved in the fighting at Iba will be forced to withdraw on Manilla and Clark as the Japanese come on from all directions.

I have some 15 B-17s on Minanao and 18 Dutch medium bombers at Manadfo and Samarinda flying naval search around the waters of the southern Philippines. Mini KB wasnt seen in the search pattern so I had assumed that they withdrew to Babaldaob.....but unfortunately mini KB materializes in the middle of the Celebes Sea and hammers Allied shipping attempting to flee from the Philippines. Several ships are sunk by Kates including AP Neptuna and AP President Madison.....they were carrying the bulk of the Cavite and Cebu BFs. I am going to have to be extremely careful to extract even a fragment of these 2 important units now.

To make it worse......an IJN cruiser SAG sits aside the chokepoint between Borneo and the Celebes and interdicts all Allied shipping attempting to flee northern Philippine waters. A USN SAG.....including CA Houston, CL Boise and CL Marblehead.....will sortie next turn from Balikpappan to try to dislodge the IJN SAG from the chokepoint. The CA Houston SAG will be covered by P-40Es from Tarakan and Balikpappan ....as well as Dutch 339 fighters.....to guard against the Kates of Mini KB.

I think that vettim has been letting mini KB withdraw from the central Celebes Sea at the end of each turn.....and then in the ensuing 3 day turn they sortie back to the center of the Celebes Sea only to withdraw again.

EARLY WAR ALLIED OPERATIONS

Even with Japan possessing a huge early war advantage in ships/troops /planes commanding the initiative ....the Allies can and should conduct 3 major operations in the face of this.

The 1st operation has been discussed......using the Chinese army offensively to secure forward defensive lines and capture Ichang and Sinyang.

But perhaps the most critical Allied op that needs to be done is the resupply of Burma/China. I dont exactly understand how the Burma Road thingie works exactly.....which exact hexes the Allies need to control for the 500 supply to go to China or if there needs to be existing supply in Rangoon or Mandalay for the 500 supplies to appear in China.

But I do know that China sucks supply better than a 2 bit hooker and my last game of AE I was able to unload 75,000 supplies in Rangoon that were sucked into China before Japan shut down the Burma Road.

This game.....I intend to deliver at least 100,000 supplies in Rangoon before Japan shuts the door. xAKs from Ceylon and a half dozen ports in India are currently unloading supplies in Rangoon....some 50,000 supplies have been dropped off in just the first 3 turns. This operation is so critical that I have the unrestricted AVG squadron CAPing Rangoon as well as a squadron of Buffaloes. A screenshot below shows all the naval activity off Burma. Next turn I will start sucking the supplies first to Mandalay and then to Lashio and Kunming.

The 3rd critical Allied op at the start of the war is assembling as many trannsport AC in Malaya and the DEI as possible. First.....since level bombers are worthless against naval targets in AE I use them for naval search and ASW. The actual patrol AC I use as transport AC only. In additon....I buy the 21 NCAC
DC-2s that start in China on the 1st turn and stage them to Sumatra. I also send the 5 C-33s from Pearl to stage across the Pacific to Java(these guys have a fair # of replacements and build up quickly to full strength). You can also use the USMC R3D2s at Pearl but they are shortlegged and must be shipped to Canton before staging across the Pacific to Noumea...and then shipped again to OZ. And then of course there are the 18 Dutch L-18 Lodestars that start in Java. I use all the transport AC to bring in every Dutch garrison I can from northern Sumatra to southern Sumatra and then from all over the DEI to Java. You can amass some 400 AV at Palembang and another 1200 AV in Java for free with all the transport AC. In additon.....you can extricate as much of III Indian Corps from Malaya and Kuching as you desire.

Vettim is using the IJA bombers on Formosa to hammer Clark and manila every turn. Hong Kong holds out yet again aginst another Japanese 1:2 assault.

The capture of Ichang is very expensive for the Allies. Vettim staged at least 2.....and possibly 3..... squadrons of A6M2s into China. One A6M2 squadron swept the AVG CAP over Changsha and destroyed 7 H81-A3s. Another squadron LRCAPed Ichang and overwhelmed Allied escorts.....the Allies lose 47 AC in A2A combat this turn vs 1 Japanese AC. 14 Blenheim IVs were lost last turn. This again show how destructive the 3 day turns are when an imbalance of force exists in the air. SEAC air forces in China will also be withdrawn to India for rest and reorganization.

The Japanese Combined Fleet appears in the northern Java Sea and makes its way to Merak. KB is here with at least 8 BBs and makes quick work of 4 Allied AMcs and 2 MLs off Java. Apparently they sailed around the Philippines through the South China Sea to enter the Java Sea from the north. It appears as if there are some transport IJN TFs along with the CVs and BBs. Vettim could be doing an early landing on Java at Merak. I think that this would be risky for him as he appears to be heavily committed in both Malaya and the Philippines.

Merak is currently undefended so much of the Dutch Army at Batavia is ordered to reinforce. Ive alrady transferred 2 P-40E squadrons from Luzon to Java. If Vettim does indeed invade Java now I will attempt to transfer the P-40B squadrons from the Philippines to Java as well.

SOUTH PACIIFC

The south and central Pacific is strangely quiet as KB, mini KB and indeed.....the bulk of the IJN Combined Fleet.....sails off the coast of Sumatra in the Java Sea. The Allies now have their naval search net set up from New Guinea all the way to Hawaii. CV Yorktown sails across the south Pacific on its way to rendezvous with Sara, Lex and Enterprise.

The USMC 8th Regiment has unloaded at Pago Pago and fuel,upplies and troops are being landed currently at Palmyra, Canton, Christmas Is., Fiji and Noumea.

Port Moresby has been reinforced with the Lark Battalion and all the Coy units.

Vettim lands unopposed at Oosthaven. 20,000 IJA troops are ashore by the end of the turn. Japan will capture Oosthaven next turn and then will approach Palembang from the south. The battle for Palembang will be interesting as we have heavily reinforced it with Dutch troops....and inadvertantly....much of III Indian Corps is here as we used Palembang as a waypoint for an extraction of the troops from Malaya to Java.

I continue to stage US Army fighter squadrons from the Philippines to Java.. The P-40E squadrons are OK but the P-40B squadrons were heavily attrited on 12/7/41 and with PDU off I cant get the replacements available(from downgrading other fighter squadrons) to rebuild them.

I was trying to get a few licks in on the IJN surface TFs and amphibious TFs that had been at Oosthaven but instead hit KB when they reversed course. I had put a squadron of 25 P-40Es on escort with these torpedo bombers but not one flew and Japanee CAP overwhelmed the B-339ds.

KB sinks DD Pope and 2 AKL but the plane losses are horrific. Japan loses 102 AC this turn to 30 Allied. In A2A, 79 Japanese AC were lost to 21 Allied. British torpedo bomber strength was cut in half.

The Chinese Army is starting to get _really_ BIG as most of it has been able to rest since the start of the war. The supply situation is great as China continues to suck supplies from Burma.....there are 30,000 supplies in Mandalay, 20,000 supplies in Lashio, 30,000 supplies in Kunming
along the supply path and over 80,000 supplies between the the terminii at Chungking and Changsha. Im able to take on replacements in most areas of China.

Vettim just swept Chungking for the 1st time in the war with A6M2s so he is defininitely trying to step up his activity all across China. The AVG didnt stand up too well to the Zero last turn over Chunking so I will begin to stage the "armored buzzsaw" Hurricanes into China from India. I have huge "Grand Armee"s sitting around in central China at Nanyang, Sian, Ichang/Cheteh and the Loyang/Chengchow/Tsiatso complex. After 2 months of passivity, its time to gather the Chinese stacks together and put a stop to Japanese impudence.
