Torpedo alley

Post by PzB74 »

Much as planned today's turn saw less action but it was far from uneventfull! [:)]

Our small surface TFs performed extremely well!
The Mutsuki class destroyer Mikazuki intercepted a convoy of cripples including 2 battleships and sent a torpedo into the Idao.
Unfortunately Mikazuki was sunk later in the day.

Andy got some payback as his numerous PT boats managed to stop our bombardment TF made up by the Mutsu and Ise.
Mutsu took no less than 3 torpedo hits; she's a tough one though. 12 sys and 34 flood damage so she should make it.

We then took revenge by engagin the crippled TF with 2 CLs and a destroyer.
The Pennsylvania was sunk while the Idaho was torpedoed and left sinking.
Several enemy destroyers were also sunk while we lost 2 including the Mikazuki.

Our subs also added to the buthcers bill; several cargo ships plus 2 loaded fuel tankers were sunk.
- Sending a sub into Port Hedland were I knew Andy's supply train was turned out to be quite profitable.

Again our LBA achieved little; some were shot down by CAP near Waingapo - had hoped to finish some cripples here but Andy's CAP was again good.

Night of the Long Lance

It's a wet dream engaging such cripple TFs low on ammo! [:D]
As you can see Andy has unloaded substantial reinforcements on Waingapo.
- We have a larget and stronger force but attacking in rough jungle would be bad for us...

What do you think; should we march 1-2 divisions back up to Memboro and ship one back to the rear to keep as reserve?
Alternatively we need to slug it out with the enemy. The only time that would have any purpose is if we managed to destroy the enemy carrier fleet.

Hmmh, if you withdraw, then you better withdraw everything from Waingapo. Fighting it out and hoping you can throw back Andy once more decisively to gain another 3 or more months of safety in the SRA sector.

Somehow I am surprised by his mix of forces there.  I was expecting 1st and 2nd Marine, Americal or any other major assets.  They must be sitting at Pearl, waiting for the CV to return to CENTPAC and cover another amphibious ops.  Well, five divisions, minor parts of other forces, HQ and support.  Sounds possible given your forces, but it probably required keeping the airfield closed and regaining air superiority.  Cutting his supply line would be a plus, but again that would probably involve a CV clash.
If you don't use your divs here now, you probably have many of them stationed somewhere Andy will simply bypass in the future.  This looks like a unique opportunity for Japan to fight at rather even terms at this stage.  Even if it gets bloody, you can still withdraw and recuperate them in the rear.

It just stroke me. MIDGETS, MIDGETS! YOU MUST FLOOD WAINGAPOE WITH MIDGETS! Actually most of possible Allied landing sites also should have midgets at anchor.

Planes seems to have low morale, after those loses, you should get fresh units, and rotate those currently present.

Lessons learned:
-Allied BBs are useless at night
-SS almost always die, after being detected by combat fleets
-SS are perfect to finish of cripples
-escort is suicide mission, THE ONLY plane used, should be OSCAR IIb

You can probably get Waingapoe, just send there lotsa independent artillery (including this badass 320mm(?) from Manchuria). AA unit with radar, can be useful, and most importantly HQ! Corps HQ, and make sure, it is in range of Area HQ!

Yeah, kinda risky, but Allied CAP protection seems very fragmented now. Too bad I can not embed videos here. GO NAGUMO GO! FOR THE EMPEROR!

All very accurate assesments Inq!
- Midgets may not work without being released from a mother sub, never seen it happen.
Only have a handful of midgets left and they're scattered between Line Islands and Singapore.

Only way to take Waingapoe is to dominate the seas and cut allied supplies.
So Nagumo has been given the task!
When done the Army will finish Waingapo.

Pools are empty? They work that way, I have "checked" it with both sides [:D]
Actually they attack pretty frequently, but rarely hit something. Put there TF with 4 Midgets. They should be able to travel on their own from nearby base.

You actually can send several SCTFs against Allied CVs, after all, you expect attacks from them, so the more targets, the better. And lucky night hit from BB can close flight deck.

Not had time to send this turn back to Andy yet, but here is the report:

Enemy carriers moved south by west instead of a more southerly path as expected.
Possible to avoid our surface combat TFs.

The effect was that KB appeared 11-12 hexes away from Allied carriers.
The only target we found were two dozen happless LSTs, landing support and troop ships...RIP.
One hex out of range the Allied "BB, BB, BB, CA, CA" TF was spotted.

So again it was our surface navy that dished out the most damage.
Andy continued unloading protected only by a few destroyers and lots of PT boats.
- Far from enough to screen the troop ships from the powerfull TFs that came in.

More than 2400 troops were reported casualties including swaths of engineers and vehicles and I don't have a full overview of how many
ships that sank yet!

We also bombardet Waingapo and will continue to do so with a vengeance now as the Allied
carriers are moving south.

The question now is "What next"!
We have achieved much but a lot remains.
If we want to defeat the Allied LCU at Waingapo we need at least another 1000 AV or so.
I will take to this task with zeal and make all necessary preparations in case we get a chance
to pull this off.

3 artillery units have already joined the troops and the heavy guns in Java can now easily be shipped over.

My other tasks is to prepare the Air Force better for receiving enemy 4Es, handling CAP on Waingapo
and receiving the Allied carriers again when they return.

I don't see any possibility of further pursuit with KB now as intentions have been revealed.

Suggestons, comments!? [:)]

Some things to think about in your future planning:

1.) If you contain the allies @ Waingapoe he can repair disabled squads but not draw new ones from the pool. Us that to your advantage.

2.) You can rotate damaged units out of the hex to faster repair them and draw new devices from the pool. That is something you should not underestimate in a battle of attrition. Guard your base on the island to not lose them.

3.) He has 1 full OZ division and parts of two parts of Australian division @ Waingapoe and an armored Bde. If you can attrit this divisions it is very very hard to replace the losses. He gets just 40 replacement squads a month in 43 and 30 in 44. Kill some of them and you can remove the divisions for a very long time.

4.) Your surface assets do very very well. At this time (late 43) you can expect around 120 PT Boats for the allies. It seems a lot but they get attrited quite fast. Use DD fleets or smaller stuff (Es or something with a gun on it) to kill them off. Especially during the day they are easy prey for surface fleets. They are nasty if Battleships run into them and they eat a torpedo. So try to clean the PTs first.

5.) You kicked a lot of allied heavy stuff out of the war with torpedo hits. It did not count it exactly but it should already be enough to fill the repair yards at cape town and Colombo with even some of the heavy assets needs repair at the east coast. That means out of the war for at least 3 - 4 months with a torpedo hit on a battleship / CV.

6.) Continue to harass him with your navy. Try to not lose the big ships (you are quite successful with that) as CAs and BBs are very strong in such a island crowded environment.

7.) There are currently only 2 Army and 1 Marine divisions dropped so the allies have a lot more to drop somewhere. Take that into account, especially guard the base on the island of Waingapoe. If allies can cap it and cut off your army they can ruin your day. And i think andy could still launch a second 4+ division assault if he has the prep. And if they are not fully prepped they are preparing now for some targets. At least i would do that.

8.) Build up some strategic reinforments (or at least try to). With that heavy commitment (4+ divisions) i would not expect any real attack not in the SRA so you can "carefully" strip some of the bases currently not under heavy threat. Andy needs his carriers to ship reinforcements and supply to Waingapoe and where the carriers are he can assault as long as KB is active.

9.) Do not lose KB :)

Overall i would say you are in a surprisingly well position that late in the war. You have a nice base contained with a lot of VP on it so the enemy has to fight. You have control the air and the sea if the allied CVs are not in action. Use that advantage to play, attrit and fight the enemy.

In fact too bad that KB was just a couple of miles too far west.  Could have been a terrible awakening for Andy's battlewagons, though it probably would also have hurt your air wings if Andy had his CVs still capping them.  Maybe better this way.  Although his amphibious and supply convoys are the strategic target, his carriers probably should to be targeted first.

Now that KB is sighted, Andy will either become a little careful, or will come out hunting.  For a quick moment I thought about suggesting to hide KB somewhere on Java, and what for the right moment to hit Andy's CVs from the rear during his next move (I would bet on a reinforcement/resupply of W, or perhaps more likely now: another amphib ops against Timor or so).  But he will likely have picket ships that will draw your naval strikes, and a make surprise flanking move impossible.  Alternatively, a preemptive strike with the carriers against Andy's supply lines (those towards Port Hedland?) might be an option, but likely also a waste since it will get attrited by allied LBA.  Well, probably might be best to withdraw the CV into the shadows again, though waiting for Andy to exert the initiative ain't striking me as a particularly clever move either.  Really a though problem now...

you are doing very well PzB. you sink some of his ships each turn without losing any of your capital ships. sooner or later it must have an effect to his transport capacity in the region. it was bad luck that your carriers were not in strike range of andys BB-TF. i dont think that he had any sort of CAp flying over his BB-TF. i mean someone who even forgets to add radar! into an invasion TF will not do this kind of micromanagement to set LRCAP on ships out of range of your LBA.

pull the KB back...the next opportunity to strike something with the KB will come for sure since it seems that andy will try to stay at w...whatever[;)] and try to hold the base. you are in the better position with heavy LBA in the region, a intact carrier fleet, your highspeed bombardment runs and your light surface forces killing allied transport capacity every turn.#

Well, one more such operation, and Allies will have no undamaged heavy warships [:D]
Use the airforce on ground attacks. Daily BBs bombard (at day maybe?) should quickly disable most of Allied units. I have actually different experiences with naval bombardment. No matter of range, I always hit lots of planes.
Anyway, just try to get little closer, to also use larger DD guns.
Just remember about HQs. Also, some independent AT units can deal with tanks.

Also, remember, that LRCAP over TFs are less effective. I think, over CVs is even less, than over normal ships.

And set some BETTYs on maximum range night attack. Maybe your SSs will catch some retreating cripples.

Oh, about those transport caught by your subs. Are they lonely, and unescorted? Where are those catches?

Use subs to generate sightings near W and put a few units on night nav attack as suggested. The key is getting the night phase sightings so the planes launch. See Capt Cruft's Downfall AAR for his tactics to accomplish this. Subs on transport mission with timid captains don't attack but will radio the airfields.

You could try to slip KB through the Sunda Strait and come at Andy from the West, but for obvious reasons this could be a high risk move. Just something to think about for the right set of circumstances.

Isolate W from supplies and the base will fall. If the SLoC can't be closed, Andy will eventually kick the door open.

Andy has an astonishing willingness to incur casualties. Are we sure he wasn't a Soviet general in a past life? [:D]

Turn is finally back to Andy; takes a loong time to set up everything every single turn...need to get a deputy [:'(]

Thx guys, really appreciate all good advice & input!

Waingapo will be quiet for a little while when Andy replenish his fleets.
Nothing more to hunt back south within LBA range so we may as well move back to Soerabaja to replenish ourselves.
Having that fuel depot so close is a blessing; much better than near Line Islands.

Have used to opportunity to restock Christmas Island with fuel; when enemy subs and carriers return it will be much more difficult restock.
After going over our troop dispositions I've identified another 3 divisions that can be moved to Waingapo; this means moving regiments in to cover for divisions
defending certain bases but I doubt Andy will invade Rabaul or Hong Kong anytime soon. Also looking up another 2 HQs including an Area Army.

_If_ we remain in a favorable position at Waingapoe a ground campaign will be started.
Most of our other bases are fairly well protected and we have most of our air support in place so it's possible to move LBA both north and east if required to.

When I returned some midgets to the pool they just dissappeared so I'm not to keen on moving midgets and without their mother subs that's a complicated process
and in enemy hexes they run out of fuel on their own very quickly.

Our LBA is quickly getting back to strength, but another week or so would do miracles!
Enemy 4Es are hitting Memboro, need to switch Nicks, Tonys and George's to CAP to reduce their numbers.
Think many of the fly at extended range; must be hard to keep operational and supplied.

I've had crack naval bombers on naval night attack for many turns and our subs and TFs have continously connected with enemy ships.
The only reaction have been "RTB because of poor weather". Think range is a bit long, 1-5 hexes is more optimal for night attack me thinks?

Yes, the intercepts are harder to make at night. Cpt Cruft was hitting the enemy about 5hexes off Formosa IIRC.

So, does all your damaged ships safely reached ports?
Japan lost, like 1 Cruiser, and 4 Destroyers?
While Allies "2 Carriers, Battleship, and numerous cruisers, and destroyers"? (actually no CVs, but 2 extra BBs)

Check the morale of air units. I yet have to see reduction in Japan fighter unit, but bombers are vulnerable. You can probably rotate them.
Also, if Allies will try to pump out water, before reaching Perth, it would be interesting, for Yamato, to pay visit in small-port rescuing operation.

They works like planes, when you disband them, it takes some time to reappear in pool. Also, they spent fuel in weird way. Sometimes they just hover in hex, and spent no fuel. You can not refuel them at sea, but sometimes they are refuelled, when your TF was in the hex during turn. Anyway, even without fuel they will attack, and they accumulate damage very slowly (and you can disband damaged).

Yes, more or less Inq. Look at list over damaged Jap ships below.
We lost CA Furutaka early on, a CL at Darwin and another later. So 1 CA, 2 CL and 4-5 DDs have been lost so far.
The list of damaged ships has grown though; good to see the Mutsu and Tone doing so well after taking such a beating.

I have managed to dent morale of Samurai pilots [8|]
- I did return the midgets to the pools months ago; instead of becoming available after 14 days they've gone AWOL!

Andy keeps his carriers just north of Broome.
4Es are put on naval attack; they go after a surface combat TF over Waingapoe and don't hit anything but CAP.

Without knowing it the KB had to stay nearly stationary this turn as most ships had replenished during the high speed dash [X(]
Ops were sky high, movement down to 1/0...Not sure what would have happened if Andy had attacked.

Had a bad time thinking about it, so much that I couldn't sleep last nigh and had to get up and run the turn [:'(]
All is well fortunately!
