just like in the morning, parts of KB´s strike aircraft attack our CVE TF at Kudat and just like in the morning, the 125 fighters there perform better than the hundreds of fighters of our main CV fleet further North... the incoming strike is completely shot up, never ending dive against the escorts and all but three bombers shot down by the Cap... the CVE´s Cap at Kudat nearly performed WITP like, while the Cap over the main fleet acted AE like... engagements in both hexes seem reasonable to me while the one like this one above is pretty near the edge... what I found off was the absolutely inability of 70 torp skilled USN torpedo bombers to achieve torp hits on ships in sinking condition and the fact that 150 Zekes get the never ending dive against 2.5 times more Hellcats on escort with the Hellcats losing 5:1... this isn´t reasonable to me, while explainable in the game: the stupid never ending dive... in total, I would rate the whole carrier engagement as playing out far better than WITP though, so I shouldn´t complain about the whole in this case... in WITP, I guess my Cap would have been 100% bullet prove, which is as stupid (or even more) than the never ending dive...

and to end this insane turn, here´s the last wave that attacks our main fleet North of Kudat... the strike gets completely whiped out as the fighter coordination immediately sent more fighters towards the bombers than there were bombers to shoot down...

what a turn... [8D]

so let´s have a look at what happened today, together with the info I received from Rainer the "why" this happened is pretty clear. Like he has tried earlier, he wanted to take advantage of the Japanese 8 hex strike ability to move in, launch a strike, clobber our CVE or amphib fleet while staying 1 hex outside of our carrier fleet´s strike range... but three things apparently went wrong this time:

a) while I always staid one hex off the CVE and amphib fleet with all the fleet carriers, this time I had two hex distance as I didn´t fear any LBA strikes that could only aim at the "invasion hex" (without using patrol aircraft to spot the CV fleet) because this time the "invasion hex" was my own base, which leads to... even if you become predictable by going with the same "routines" all the time, the moment you do something different can become a really nasty surprise for the enemy...

b) I guess Rainer thought I would go directly for Jesselton with the ampib TF because when you look at the screenshots, the IJN BB fleet (and therefore the carriers too) were ordered to a position eight hexes NE of Jesselton...

c) as the third screw up today was the enemy fleet´s nav search spotting my carriers and KB reacting one hex towards them

so these three things went wrong today and led to a 100% disaster for the IJN as we top any real life carrier engagement in both numbers involved and numbers of carriers sunk in one battle... while I mentioned it quite a couple of times that the time when the Japanese should have tried their decisive battle seems to long have passed, having had KB intact always meant a threat to everything that I wouldn´t escort with our mightly fleet outside our powerful LBA... and the next chance to use KB would have been when we attack the Philipines to land on the main island when there are several huge airfields around Manila that could be filled up with 2000 enemy aircraft to be released, followed by KB on day two or even better day three (one problem with this plan of course would be our tactic to never unload longer than one day in a threatened area)... but using KB in this area where Japanese LBA plays no role at all (Brunei and Miri are trashed) and misinterpreting our move of course has to lead to a massacre, no matter how much good or bad luck either side has because we just had by far too many carriers to see a positive outcome for the Japanese...

here are the air losses:

Image

while the Allied losses are not affected (?) by FOW (guess I should get the exact losses?) the Japanese are and I doubt they have lost that many aircraft. My estimation would be something like 500 aircraft destroyed at a ratio of 2:1 bombers/fighters, so probably many elite fighter pilots the Japanese start with are still alive... they lost their carriers though... [;)] if we leave FOW aside, then the enemy has lost 180+ Zekes while we have lost 150+ Hellcats/Corsairs which dramatically displays the unparity in fighter performance today, mostly happening due to our first mega strike against KB when our 350+ fighters were chopped to pieces by some 150+ enemy fighters on Cap which is something I fail to understand (except the routine being off here - due to the mega penalty escorts get and the mega advantage the dive gets)... outnumbering the enemy fighters around 5:1 in total today, having nearly a 1:1 loss rate is depressing, considering us having superior aircraft and pilots trained to the max... We have lost around four dozen 70 skilled fighter pilots but very few bomber pilots of escorted strikes... the unescorted piece meal strikes were shot down in droves, even by a meager Cap and those of course suffered horrendous pilot losses too... horrendous due to the reason that it takes S I X months to train a carrier based torpedo bomber pilot (3 months to each 70 navbomb, another 3 months to reach 70 torp)... in comparison, the Helldiver pilots only need 3 months as navbomb is all they need... if you then watch hundreds of torp bombers missing ships that are lying dead in the water you can only start to cry as this just can´t be right when on the other hand a handful of Betties, Nells, Francis, Kate, Jills or whatever other IJNAF torp bomber put holes in your ships at nearly all ocassions, with the IJN torp being so much superior probably the only reason for this as our pilots are just as trained as all the IJNAF pilots (except the elite pilots they get at the start of course)... I would rate the Japanese torp bombers 3-4 times more effective than USN ones, therefore every follow on game will see my USN torp bombers being in level bombing mode at 6000ft mostly... in this game it doesn´t really matter much anymore because the enemy CV fleet is trashed... I´ve told Rainer that I estimate my carrier fleet strenght (without all my CVE) being 4 times stronger now than all CV, CVL, CVE together that are left for his Navy and got the reply that he still has 6 "carriers" so still something to be reckoned with... we completely missed Shokaku, Zuikaku in the engagement, Akagi and Kaga probably still are in a shipyard in Japan which leaves another two carriers of unknown class, perhaps an Unryu and another CVL somewhere... for sure, the enemy won´t field more than 400 carrier based aircraft if he´s able to bring all his carriers together and such a force isn´t even a real threat to two of my CVE TFs (2x13 CVE) as such a CVE group is going to field around 500 fighters...

Good analysis. It is a fine line holding KB back because there is some merit if forcing the Allied player to use mass and not split up operations. (A good reason why the Allies should not risk carriers in 42 as well) but there comes a certain point in the game where KB, no matter how strong becomes redundant. The Japanese player just can't wait forever because once that point is reached, KB is going to get smashed no matter the damaged dealt out to the Allies. Except in a unfavorable position, a good 8-10 Allied fleet carriers can probably fight and any untouched KB to a draw.

so let´s have a look at what happened today, together with the info I received from Rainer the "why" this happened is pretty clear.

Castor,

just a small comment on plane losses. The numbers you see divided by model are affected by FOW, but the total number you see in the intel report and on the right side of the screen (611 planes for Japan) is SPOT ON.
I tested it many times and the number you see in the intel report is exactly right, even with FOW ON. If you use tracker you will also able to see the exact number of losses for each model.

Hi Jeffrey

thanks for this info, very much appreciated. As I´ve often seen more aircraft "type x" shot down than there even were in combat I´ve always thought the total losses would be FOW too as I´ve never summed up the losses of individual types.

yeah, the game is about numbers afterall and while using CV fleets (of both sides) like Rainer and I have done is rather unrealistic, since WITP I´ve always been saying "splitting your assets is splitting your chance of success". With that credo I have smacked a couple of players splitting KB in 42 for example. I couldn´t think of any chance for KB in a heads on engagement with my CV fleet (even hard without the 13 CVE I had with the fleet carriers) but the Japanese haven´t planned to attack my carriers anyway but the plan got screwed up.

IMO KB like in the engagement above would be a match for 10 Essex CV though because that would mean only 400 Hellcats, if you send 160 on escort you end up with 240 max over your carriers and if you look at what got through my 500+ fighters you can say good bye to a couple of flattops because the IJN torp bombers bite. On the other hand, sending "only" 500 strike aircraft against KB probably would have meant 30-50% less damage done (depending on the weather, remember I had "clear sky") as you can´t rely on TBF/TBM carrying torps anyway. So while the floor was whiped in this turn, with "only" 10 carriers and bad weather perhaps, the enemy would have got away light with us taking more (probably far more) damage, ending in a draw perhaps. Not that it would really count in the game to lose a couple of carriers for the Allied, I still always try to keep damage at a minimum because I´m more thinking about real life and what it has meant for public to lose a BB or a CV, let alone four or five of these capital ships in one day. In the game the Allied player at times cheers when he sinks 6 IJN CV for 4 Allied CV but in real life 4 Allied CV lost would be quite a tragedy.

Following the air losses, let´s have a look at the carriers.

The enemy should have lost this:

CV: Unryu, Junyo, Taiho, Hiryu, Soryu

CVL: Nisshin, Mizuho, Ryuho, Zuiho, Chiyoda, Ryujo

CVE: Shinyo, Chuyo, Kaiyo (probably), Taiyo, Unyo (probably), Hosho

4 CV, 6 CVL and 4 CVE plus two more probably sunk. Several other ships heavily damaged or sunk.

The Allied have lost the British CVE Battler (carrying two dozen Corsair II which is a real pity to lose them) plus seven CVE and a CVL damaged. Two CVE were on the edge of sinking but managed to reach Tawi Tawi and could be saved so Battler was the only ship actually been lost. [:)] Counting up the sunk carriers, it looks less than what the replay has made me think because I´ve thought I´ve whiped out everything. On the other hand, with Shokaku, Zuikaku, Akagi and Kaga either not being attack or not with KB at all due to ongoing repairs, there were not that many more carriers available to be sunk I guess. I´m sure Rainer had all operational carriers in one basket for this attack.

that´s how my damaged carriers looked like after the last bomb was dropped:

wow, a Peggy strike shows up unescorted, Rainer said he hoped to be lucky and catch some ships at Kudat... not as long as my CVE fleet is sitting there... even leaking Cap from the fleet carriers three hexes away shows up... all Peggies were shot down, even though not as many as the intel screen shows of course...

due to having had so many sightings yesterday I´ve decided to use the fleet carriers for a raid a bit deeper into the South China Sea which of course also brought me into range of enemy aircraft on the Philipines (9 hexes to Manila which is the enemy´s main airfield there). The enemy carriers are no threat anymore but going closer to several big airfields of course posed a serious threat, depending on the number of aircraft set to attack there. My main concern was the number of fighters on Cap over my carriers as I expected many of them heading out to escort the bombers as I refuse to use Cap settings that cause 50+ fatigue within one or two days and have "forgotten" to shorten the range of 70% of the fighters - in fact, it´s just too much work to do so when you´ve got dozens of carriers in a hex and have to give orders to every squadron on them...

same as we´ve seen earlier, the enemy starts off with sweeps as these escorts fail to meet up with the bombers... none of them were set to ceiling "escorts" and so they came in at 6000ft and were bounced by our Cap that shred the whole strike, not without over a dozen Allied fighters shot down though... no matter which settings you use, the whole strike routine is bullocks, the enemy would have been better off setting everything to max alt instead of trying to set them to the same alt as the bombers while failing just as often... bullocks... [8|]

following the Zeke/George sweep the bomber strike shows up with some outdated A6M2 (don´t know if the enemy is really short of advanced airframes or if he´s so restricted with his upgrade paths - PDU is on btw)... neither the escorts nor the bombers had a chance... so far so good, expected far bigger and much more dangerous strikes... neither our carriers nor the enemy airfields launched any strikes in the morning and that´s all that was coming from the Philipines... amazing as the 300 Cap surely wouldn´t be a vacuum cleaner of incoming strikes...

then the carriers finally launch a strike... no idea why no strike was flown in the morning and no idea why only this TF is attacked as there were at least two dozen more ships in other TFs in range and we´ve got hundreds of bombers ready... that convoy was hit hard though...

we´re going to throw another 1300 av onto the island, until then, no chance to achieve something... two lucky ground combat rounds and bringing in 4th Guards div bought Rainer at least three months here... the only major invasion that was stalled so far... that´s why I don´t like the island campaign through the Pacific, takes just too much time if you get stalled somewhere... and getting stalled on a single base island is easier than getting stalled on a big island with several bases as you usually at least have one port to easily unload further troops which isn´t possible if you only own a "bridgehead" and don´t have 100% prepped reinforcements...

we lose two dozen+ carrier based fighters today but only a couple of pilots while we were able to take down something like 80 enemy aircraft with probably all pilots lost...

My campaign is in the last quarter of 1943 and I was looking over the surface reinforcements for the Allies. They sure get plenty-especially DDs. One thing I noted is that virtually every surface ship that comes into the game after 1/44 has a crew rating over 70 for both day and night. Some of them are closer to 80. No problem there. Yet, I have veteran DDs and CAs that have been fighting since 12/7/41 and some of them are still below 60. I can'f figure this one out. The crew exp levels on some of my old BBs just plain suck. Apparently, surviving the Pearl Harbor attack did little to educate these guys...[X(]

Japanese Task Force Manages to Escape
Task forces break off...

we´ve dispatched a cruiser squadron from our carriers to bombard the place and engage ships if any show up... we meet one of the TFs that got away from being hit by our carriers and whipe the floor with the Japanese... long battle and lots of shells being fired, not sure the bombardment will have any effect...

then we start our air attacks and it was the time to really get upset about this piss poor design that was called "enhanced strike routines to create more realistic air attacks"... [8|] pff, what a fart... have ordered 150 fighters to sweep and as usual, the sweeps go in at squadron size while losng a fragment of three fighters each... also as usual, we then meet an enemy that has numerical superiority as radar again sends up everything that has not been damaged before... this design is just silly...

you employ twice, three times, four times, five times or even more aircraft than the enemy but end up in a numerical disadvantage all the time because the design is bullocks... nothing more to say than this has nothing to do with realism, nothing...

wow, it´s really stupid as it is... 150 fighters (6 full squadrons) set to sweep, major parts of two show up before the bombers... another four squadrons were set to escort, not a single fighter shows up with the bombers... out of 250 fighters, not even 50 manage to show up at a time to help out the bombers... S I L L Y by design... does it matter? no, of course not... why? because bombers alone perform better anyway than fighters would do... this is just crazy...

go and play BoB bombing the Reich, then go back and try to design a working routine for WITP AE... as it is now, it´s nothing but a strange piece of crap... the more squadrons involved, the stranger it gets...

what has been damaged by the cruisers during the night is now torched by the bombers... but the strike routine leaves me again...

the oh so realistic strike routine then does with the bomber strikes what it always does, one huge strike is followed by lots of piece meal waves... yeah, pure realism... if WITP´s strikes were unrealistic, how can someone think this would be realistic? None of the books about airwar in WWII show anything coming close to how strikes, sweeps or escorts look like in the game...

and no setting or anything else in the game would make it anywhere better...

more Lightnings, the fragment came in already? [8|] it´s so ridicioulos and reading tips or guides how to improve this makes it even more ridicoulos when you find out this all helps nothing and is nothing but a fairytale that has been brought up to mask obvious flaws that have been there right from release and seem to never be even looked at...

so besides escort and sweep missions failing completely again today, I should perhaps also mention that something like 50% of the fighters didn´t fly at all... I don´t even want to get started about this (no, forget morale, fat or anything else, it was just perfect)... this behaviour is well known already from WITP, obeying orders wasn´t common in WWII you know... unfortunately, with the new oh so great strike routines, this has now become an even bigger problem... but hey, realism pure...

that´s it then... ordering 250 advanced fighters to attack that would have outnumbered the enemy 3-4:1 ended up in being outnumbered by the enemy 3:1 because the strike routine decided this would be much more realistic...

this meant our fighters have shot down a dozen enemies for the loss of nearly two dozen of our fighters that were better aircraft flown by 70 skilled pilots... mhm, alltogether this sounds like a highly reasonable and realistic result for the employed forces... now imagine the unrealistic cruiser bombardment wouldn´t have worked during the night... I go with what I´ve said lots of times earlier already, directly attacking a heavily capped target with radar is a nogo because with the borked strike routines you end up at a disadvantage again and again and again, no matter if you employ a three or four time bigger force that clearly also got the better aircraft...

it makes me sad but at the same time I´m just going to switch back to the old tactic of trying to draw out leaking Cap... and then Allied players wonder when they run out of advanced fighters after attacking heavily Capped targets... of course, using carrier based fighter squadrons on sweep works just perfect as they come in near perfectly "coordinated", for what reason ever... something you fail to manage if you order 2x25 fighters from a level 9 airfield... mhm, that surely wasn´t possible in real life... if you say that often enough, at some point you probably start to believe it yourselve...

ORIGINAL: crsutton

My campaign is in the last quarter of 1943 and I was looking over the surface reinforcements for the Allies. They sure get plenty-especially DDs. One thing I noted is that virtually every surface ship that comes into the game after 1/44 has a crew rating over 70 for both day and night. Some of them are closer to 80. No problem there. Yet, I have veteran DDs and CAs that have been fighting since 12/7/41 and some of them are still below 60. I can'f figure this one out. The crew exp levels on some of my old BBs just plain suck. Apparently, surviving the Pearl Harbor attack did little to educate these guys...[X(]

yeah, the "veteran" ships can´t match the reinforcements. Look at BB Richelieu for example, first I´ve thought I would not really have a use for her just to find out it´s the highest experienced BB I have available now. So she´s leading my US CV fleet because all the modern US BBs just suck when you compare the exp of them and Richelieu. And I rate exp higher than how the BB looks like because most times you´ve got night engagements and then it doesn´t really matter much if you hit your enemy with a 14" shell from 2000 yards or a 18".

The cruiser bombardment and the bombers accounted for the enemy´s losses today, using our 250 fighters just accounted for more losses on our side. I wonder why I spend hours and hours for click parties to transfer all those pilots around all the time.

nice move, Rainer flew in some Judies to Zamboanga (Western Mindanao) and launches a surprise strike on a small, empty convoy... damage first looked to be light but both ships sank later due to bomb damage... that´s the problem with those bypassed little bases, you bomb them now and then but at some point they´re able to launch a strike again...

Iloilo is a clear hex and recon reports 10000 enemy troops defending the place... this is our primary target to put pressure on the Manila area as it´s within normal range of all our fighters from Iloilo and that place can be built up to level 9... we´re going to land some paras West of it and throw a couple of rgts onto the island to take out the Japanese garisson... expect to meet 100-150 enemy av there but our bombers will do the job for the infantry... attacking here still out some time...

the troops that have been brought to Kudat marched to Jesselton and the base falls to 33rd Inf Div... this is going to be our main airfield for long range strikes from Borneo deep into the South China Sea with Hanoi being the base where our Northern bombers are stationed...

we destroy one and a halve dozen enemy aircraft at Jesselton which show up as destroyed A2A... these were KB aircraft that diverted to that base when their carriers got sunk...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Jun 04, 44
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Submarine attack near Manado at 75,99

Japanese Ships
SS I-54, hits 16, and is sunk

Allied Ships
BB Indiana
CLAA Reno
CLAA San Juan
DD Claxton
DD Fletcher
DD Izard
DD Hudson
DD Hazelwood
DD Harrison

SS I-54 is sighted by escort
DD Izard fails to find sub and abandons search
DD Hudson attacking submerged sub ....
SS I-54 forced to surface!
DD Hudson firing on surfaced sub ....
DD Hazelwood firing on surfaced sub ....
DD Harrison firing on surfaced sub ....
DD Izard firing on surfaced sub ....
Sub slips beneath the waves

the enemy still sends his subs into our dominated areas occasionally but they mostly end up being sunk... I wouldn´t use such a tactic of infiltration but would rather horde my subs in an area where I would expect the enemy to attack and then send in at least a dozen which perhaps could inflict some damage but sending them one by one usually means losing them one by one without inflicting any real damage... IMO Japanese ASW at this stage of the war is overpowered at least 3:1 compared to real life abilities while I also find Allied ASW to be even better than what it was in real life, but the disparity is by far not as big as with Japanese ASW...

huge strike in clear sky gives an excellent result... if weather forecast could be used you could reduce airstrikes by a factor three at least because you wouldn´t fly strikes in thunderstorms all the time that of course don´t give the same results as strikes like the above one...

the enemy still uses his transport aircraft a lot, probably for supply flights of cut off bases and to bring out fragments to rebuild units and the ac loss list often reminds me of this...
